Stepping in Deep Duke-y: More Details, Please
This morning we wrote about the recent scandal at Duke Law School, in which a Fulbright & Jaworski partner uttered “the n word” during the course of a recruiting event. We published an email from Dean Katharine T. Bartlett to the student body about the incident.
Unfortunately, there’s still so much that we don’t know. To those of you with knowledge of the underlying events, here are a few things we’re curious about:
1. What type of event was this — a meeting, a one-on-one interview, etc.? Was the complaining student the only one who heard “the n word”?2. In what context was “the n word” uttered? In other words, what exactly was the “story” that the partner was telling to the student(s)?
3. Who was the Fulbright & Jaworski partner who said this racial slur?
These are just a few representative questions. We’d love to get ANY additional information about the incident, no matter how trivial. Thanks in advance for your tips.
Update: We now have more details and context about the incident — and it’s not as bad as it initially sounded. See here.

First, I am surprised Duke students would care. Second, I had a problem with a racist Fulbright partner (from Houston) a couple years ago in an interview, so I am also not surprised about the comment.
I bet you wouldn't be covering this story if it happened at a Tier 2 law school. Of course, a BigLaw firm like Fulbright & Jaworski would never be recruiting at a Tier 2 school like mine, so I guess it's understandable.
maybe if you studied more instead of posting your crap here all day long you would get a biglaw job, you fucking loser
L2L, you have the worst schtick ever. HTH.
Duke has on-campus recruiting this month for 1L summer associate positions. Although firms have been having receptions, etc. in the evenings, I I imagine that this happened during an on-campus interview.
Is Loyola tier 2 or tier 3 ???
Unsubstantiated rumor: the incident took place in a mock interview, and word of it came out in a discussion during the Minority Town Hall meeting held yesterday, after which the administration pushed the student to reveal the identity of the firm/partner in question so they could pursue it appropriately.
I love L2L.
3:34 - Does it matter?
3:38: A "mock interview"? Was the partner trying to see how the candidate would deal with an uncomfortable situation?
They do them for the benefit of the law students -- 1Ls have the opportunity in the spring to do mock interviews so they can see what the real interview experience is like, and to get feedback on how they can improve. They get real attorneys to come down and do them.
So maybe dropping the "N-bomb" WAS a test of sorts?
Like in Rhodes Scholar interviews, when they secretly glue the window shut, then ask the candidate to open the window in the middle of the interview - to see how they function under pressure?
Loyola 2L,
Are you neurotic? Not that there is anything wrong with that.........
No I'm just sad about being unemployed. Not that anyone cares about a tier 2 student's feelings.
This is hilarious. It's amazing how one slipup can now cause an international incident. I remember when I was a summer associate there was an incident involving a V&E partner who took a bunch of male summers out to a strip club and ordered BJs for everyone under the table. This only caused a minor scandal.
stevens, this is why most civilized people stay the hell away from Texas.
That partner was me. Watch it.
I too am Spartacus!
The mock interview rumor sounds like something out of "The Office".
Loyola2L, will you marry me?
Well, I am looking to gigolo my way up in the world. Are you tier 1?
Tier 1 and Biglaw Baby!
Bartlett's trying to create a big thing out of this... that's why the vague E-mail that could have been read to mean a student was actually called the naughty word. A little minority street-cred for Duke?
I'm just pissed because I'm a current Duke 2L, and I don't want firms thinking we're a bunch of pussies. One oversensitive prick and I have to apologize for my fucking law school (again).
