October Term 2007 Clerk Hiring: Filling in the Blanks
Our recent post about Supreme Court clerk hiring for October 2007 generated a wealth of tips -- just as we hoped it would. You drew our attention to a number of future clerks whose hirings were not reflected in our last listing.
Like Leslie Kendrick, a former Rhodes scholar and current Wilkinson clerk. We like the story of how Justice Souter offered her a job:
Kendrick was working at her desk on an ordinary Friday afternoon when the call from Souter came though. “I wondered if you were still in the market for a clerkship?" she recalled Souter asking. Of course, the answer was yes.
We believe that we now have the names of all the OT 2007 clerks. Also, Justice Thomas has hired almost all of his OT 2008 clerks, and Justice Alito has hired at least one.
You can check out the complete listing of next Term's clerks, as well as some OT 2008 info, after the jump.
As always, please bring errors or omissions to our attention by email (subject line: "Supreme Court clerk hiring"). Thanks!

what's up with the drop in hires for recent grads - tons of these people are years out: is this a new trend?
In the past four or five years, yeah. The justices are starting to like clerks with more experience.
(Also, Alito brings the average clerk age or distance from law school graduation way up, since he's hiring all these dinosaurs who clerked for him before on the Third.)
Notice all the Garland clerks? Looks like he may be the the Luttig (for the other wing, that is).
who is the fourth OT 08 Thomas clerk?
re: garland--perhaps, and nothing against garland, but of the 4 garland clerks, anton clerked for roberts, or was set to start, just as roberts got promoted and got put with garland at the last minute, so it was highly likely that he would get a roberts scotus clerkship.
and as for brian fletcher, a scotus clerkship was pretty much guaranteed (as close to guaranteed as scotus clerkships get, anyway)--he was pres. of the harv law review, the fay prize winner (HLS's equivalent of valedictorian), and winner of the ames moot court competition. plus he's a nice guy. so again, he was pretty much a slam dunk regardless of who he clerked for. i don't know the other two garland clerks.
What's up with the ever-present underrepresentation of women? Come on Souter, one female hire in two years now??
Not to go all "loyola 2Lame" on you, but I am so jealous, yet I hate myself for being jealous.
garland's got a pretty diverse bunch next year (3 women and one african american man) so OT '08 should be a bit diversified.
Philippa Scarlett is Afro-Caribbean American.
