$50k Club: Weil Makes It the Fab Four
It didn't take long for the $50k club to gain another member!
Multiple sources tell us that Weil, Gotshal & Manges decided last night to match the $50,000 clerkship bonus being offered by Sullivan & Cromwell, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, and Paul Weiss.
Who'll be the next to join this exalted group?
Programming Note: With that exciting news, LEWW is signing off for the week. We're heading up to New York for some things we can't get in Alabama: Major League Baseball and Mario Batali.
It's been an honor and a delight to fill in for David. He'll be back soon with more on this and other stories. (And of course, LEWW will return with a new wedding column next week.)

Is that flat, or does Weil still double for two years?

Good news! If NYC is at $50, how long before all the of DC reaches $35 and the cream of the crop raises above?

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
Ill tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air
In West Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys said were up in no good
Started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said youre moving with your aunt and uncle in Bel-Air
I begged and pleaded with her the other day
But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way
She gave me a kissing and she gave me my ticket
I put my Walkman on and said I might as well kick it
First class, yo this is bad,
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass
Is this what the people of Bel-Air livin like,
Hmm, this might be alright!
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
License plate said "Fresh" and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to Bel-Air
I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby "yo, homes, smell you later!"
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To settle my throne as the prince of Bel-Air

I hope Laurie keeps posting even when Lat comes back (and not just the wedding columns, though I like those too).

Ohio firms raiseto $75K per clerkship!!
Posted by: anon | April 27, 2007 10:59 PM
An unnamed source from an unnamed firm discovered that said unnamed firm recently discussed its preparedness to increase first year salaries to $185k if the market should so move.
Posted by: Anon | April 27, 2007 11:14 PM
That must just be in Columbus. I hear Cleveland has gone to $80K.
Posted by: Re: 10:59 | April 28, 2007 08:31 AM
THE MARKET IS OUTTA CONTROL SON
Posted by: anon | April 28, 2007 11:45 AM
I wonder if this will incentivize associates to leave the firm to clerk and then come back?
Posted by: Anonymous | April 28, 2007 12:13 PM
that incentive already exists, because clerk payscale is based on the # of prior years of legal experience, and firms give you credit for your clerk year whether it replaces your 1st year or 2nd year with the firm
Posted by: anonclerk | April 28, 2007 06:33 PM
Laurie, you were awesome while Lat was gone. Hopefully you can keep contributing. You rocked!

Does this increase in bonus affect current clerks who have already accepted an offer to join these four firms in the Fall of 2007, or does it apply to current 3Ls who would begin clerking in the Fall of 2007 (supposedly beginning for one of the four firms in the Fall of 2008)?
Posted by: Clerk | April 30, 2007 09:17 AM
Applies to all.
Posted by: anon | April 30, 2007 10:09 AM
Anon 10.09,
Is that a hope, wish, rumor, conjecture or fact?
Obviously my hands are tied as I've accepted at one of the four firms, but I want to know how to approach a conversation about it. That is, if "applies to all" is a fact, then I would approach handling that particular phone call/email differently.
Please let me know how you know and how sure of your knowledge you are.
thanks,
clerk.
Posted by: Clerk | April 30, 2007 11:09 AM
have an offer at one of them, too, and it applies universally.

anon 10.09/11.24,
Any chance you'd say which one?

What level of clerkship are we referring to here, generally? Obviously not state....but is Fed District going to get you the bucks?

Fed. Dist, Fed. Circuit, and State Supremes.

c'mon uncle kirkland!! you know you want to.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 30, 2007 02:48 PM
What constitutes a big firm that would match these raises? NYLJ Top 15? AMLaw Top 20?
Offers from Cleary and W&C. They need to get on it.
Posted by: Anony-Must | April 30, 2007 03:00 PM
I am curious if Weil is doubling the 50k for clerks with two clerkships. I assume they are not, because the other firms are not. BUt Weil for the last few weeks has been offering two year clerks 70k (35x2). Could it be that they just REDUCED their offers to two year clerks by $20,000?? That doesn't seem likely either.
Lat, can you look in to this? Pretty please?
Posted by: 2 yr. clerk | April 30, 2007 03:08 PM
Anony-must, you need to get on the phone to Cleary and W&C (I assume you mean Williams?). If you have yet to accept you have some leverage to at least make your interest known. They're not going to match just because one person asked them to, but every little bit helps.

Any legs to the rumor that Skadden went to $60K?
Posted by: SkaddenRumor | April 30, 2007 03:34 PM
3:34
There is no truth to the rumor; SASMF is still at $20K.
Posted by: anon | April 30, 2007 03:47 PM
That's not true because i know ppl there who are getting a $35k bonus.
Posted by: reply to 3.34 | April 30, 2007 03:53 PM
Are the people claiming to get $35K clerking now and starting at SASMF-NY this fall?
Posted by: Anon | April 30, 2007 04:00 PM
yeah! where've you been?
Posted by: anon | April 30, 2007 04:13 PM
Been busy mailing out resumes to PW, SC, STB, and WGM.
Posted by: Anon | April 30, 2007 04:19 PM
Doesn't W&C usually stand for White & Case? If that's the case, they were pretty quick to jump on the $160K bandwagon. I'm hoping that we'll see a similar pattern here.
Posted by: AIII Anonymous | April 30, 2007 04:31 PM
It would indeed be interesting to know if the bonus doubles for 2 year clerks -- because that'd be a $100K bonus, which would be news.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 30, 2007 05:06 PM
Perhaps, Weil will pay 50K for one year and 70k for two years...that would take care of the potential anamoly pointed out by 3:08, without paying 100k...
Posted by: Anonymous | April 30, 2007 06:29 PM
anyone know about cravath?
Posted by: anon | May 1, 2007 12:09 AM
CSM is matching the $50,00 bonus.
Posted by: popozudo | May 1, 2007 01:04 AM
And Debevoise has not matched?
Posted by: popozao | May 1, 2007 08:57 AM
Any Cleary rumors?
Posted by: Anonymous | May 1, 2007 09:19 AM
Anyone have any suggested protocol if you're a clerk that has already accepted at one of the $15K firms?
Write to the recruiter? Cry? Pray that they succumb to the pressure?
Posted by: Conan O'Anon | May 1, 2007 09:51 AM
Call or email the firm's recruiting coordinator and just inquire if there has been any change to the clerkship bonus since you accepted.
He/she will understand why you are calling.
