Brokeback Lawfirm: How Long Will This Spectacle Go On?
Things have been quiet lately on the Aaron Charney v. Sullivan & Cromwell front, but this week brings an exciting event. This Thursday, April 12, in New York Supreme Court, Justice Bernard Fried will preside over the Mother of All Hearings: an omnibus hearing at which the parties' various motions and cross-motions will be argued.
Happily, we will be up in New York on Thursday. We will attend the hearing and report on the proceedings.
So it's full speed ahead in Charney v. S&C. Contrary to what some predicted -- including ourselves, at various points in time -- this case doesn't look like it will be settling anytime soon. This raises the question:
How long will this litigation be dragged out?
(Which raises another question: How is Aaron Charney supporting himself in the meantime? We're guessing he has ample savings, from his years at S&C, and perhaps some support from his family. But if you have more specific knowledge, please drop us a line.)
One of you suggested a poll, and we like the idea. Please cast your vote:

Things have been quite lately? Well, let's hope they don't get more lately too soon.

That's not grammar; it's a typographical error, or a spelling error at worse. Your definition of grammar is overbroad.
Definition Nazi, that doesn't mean the poster isn't a grammar nazi in addition to a spelling nazi; no rule says your name has to refer directly to the content of your post (all evidence from Loyola2L to the contrary).
Who thinks "all appeals" can be resolved withing six months? Do people on this board actually practice law???? They'll be lucky if the trial starts in six months. See, there's a little thing called discovery. Appeals alone take 6-12 months minimum.
What a bunch of fools on this board.
Gallion OUT!
I think people expect a settlement within 6 months, G. Cool off.
11:24 is right: "including all appeals IF IT DOESN'T SETTLE." If a settlement is reached, obviously there won't be any appeals. Do people on this board actually practice law?
(I don't think there will be a settlement, but that's just my opinion. Judging from the poll results so far, it looks like many people disagree.)
Lat, what makes you think Charney would have "ample savings" from working a few years as an associate at S&C? It's a law firm, not an I-bank. In NYC or SF, once you pay rent and feed yourself, there's not much paycheck left.
you can save easily $100K per year as a midlevel at a NYC law firm. more if you're single.
just don't spend like an idiot.
He must come from a well-off family given his educational background.
Charney might have misplayed this one. By publicly dragging S&C through the mud he removed much of their incentive to settle.
Everyone assumes Charney is after the $ but maybe he's just still really feeling betrayed and angry adn wants to keep this thing going? Who knows
3:54 - Is that's worth throwing your life away for?
Maybe Charney feels like he's already lost everything so why not just see it through?
maybe charney is psycho..
4:45 He lost everything because someone told him there was poop on a piece of paper? He should have never complained.
maybe charney is psycho? He's obviously psycho.
His Complaint mentioned doctored reviews thouhg. that could derail anyone who held out a glimmer of hope of making partner at BogLaw.
So because you don't make biglaw partner your life is over? The vast majority of associates don't make biglaw partner.
Right. But if he bought into that whole BigLaw world (which he apparently did) he could have figured his "life was over." Not saying it is right... just that there are a lot of pathetic creatures out there making the grades and going to the right schools and so on with that goal.
Forget how long it will take to settle:
Is Charney single? I'd hit it. Especially if boyfriend is about to get a big paycheck from a homophobic white shoe law firm. Tres sexy.
All joking aside, he is cute in a take-home-to-mom sort of way, and I feel bad for the kid. Especially since the dickwad homophobic partners whose douchebaggery started this whole mess are gonna get off with a slap on the wrists.
I'm hungry. Anyone want a cheeseburger?
When he's sitting at home for four years during litigation, he'll realize the meaning of "your life being over."
I go to a 7th-tier law school. My life is over.
Dude,
You not lovin' it a Peoples' College of Law? Villaraigosa and other LA luminaries are grads! I'd say you had a leg up on all Loyola 2Ls!
Tier 1/ Biglaw
Well, I'm gonna go get a cheeseburger. Anyone wants one, just let me know.
Great, now we have a cheeseburger troll.
Gallion: "Who thinks "all appeals" can be resolved withing six months? Do people on this board actually practice law???? They'll be lucky if the trial starts in six months."
Folks forget that after you file the Note of Issue, you have to wait on line to get a trial date, and in New York County, to my knowledge, that ALONE takes longer than 6 months. I don't think there is a special track for big law firms and celebrities.
There is no chance in hell there will be a trial in 6 months. You won't even finish half of discovery by then. NY isn't a rocket docket state.
You can save $100k as a mid-level? Maybe if you're at Wachtell. But if your base salary is $210k, and you get $50k in bonus, after taxes, etc., you are only taking home $130k. So if you can manage to live in Manhattan for $30k for the year, maybe.
In reality, saving about $50k is do-able in NYC as a mid-level.
Whatever Charney saved probably went for the down payment of his $900k (and tiny) condo.
Is he really throwing his life away? I think he's DOING something great with his life, and helping all of us. It's that kind of mentality (conform or ruin your life) that prevents us associates from doing anything about the abuse (and discrimination) we suffer.
