Brokeback Lawfirm: Some Bad News for S&C
The New York Law Journal recently published its “Book of Lists,” as an insert to a hard copy issue. We haven’t seen it ourselves, but a tipster highlighted some findings for us:
The ones that impressed me – considering the Aaron Charney litigation – were the surveys on most satisfied midlevel associates and most satisfied summer associates at large NY firms. As you can imagine, Sullivan & Cromwell did very poorly on these rankings. For midlevel associates, they ranked No. 60, and had the largest number of respondents to the survey (88) of any firm on the list. For summer associates, they ranked No. 71, although several firms that ranked higher had a greater number of summer associates responding to the survey. On the pro bono services list, they ranked No. 45.
But they were No. 11 on size of NY office, and No. 14 on highest grossing.
You really should get a copy of this if you haven’t seen it – it would be grist for quite a bit of info on your blog.
We realize that rankings — e.g., the U.S. News & World Report law school rankings — can be pretty silly. But many people, ourselves included, still fixate on them. This isn’t exactly surprising. As Professor Miranda Fleischer recently observed, “we are all obsessed with measuring ourselves in some way, shape or form.”
(We haven’t located a copy of these rankings online — although, truth be told, we didn’t look very hard. If you locate them online, please let us know.)

David. Please find out how Charney is supporting himself throughout the litigation. What is he going to do if this case takes four years to resolve?
Yes David. Find out how he lives on zero monthly income. I have a feeling that is going to be my future.
WHY would you care 12:53?
12:53: Considering that Charney seems to be shunning the media these days, that may be easier said than done. My guess is that he has savings + parental help.
1:03, WHY don't you care?
1:05, but it's a really important question. This case could easily take years to litigate. What is Charney going to do during this period? Is he looking for corporate work? Is he looking for any work at all? How is he paying his mortgage? What about health insurance?
Book of Lists here, I think!

how is s&c going to recruit this fall?!?!?
They'll recruit the way they always recruit - by impressing people with their power and the riches they can bestow.
"how is s&c going to recruit this fall?!?!?"
Hopefully with a tier 2 focus.
S&C Will recruit by blowing smoke up everyone's asses -- because once you've spent your 2L summer somewhere, you pretty much have to work there to start. No one is hiring 3L's who didnt' get an offer from their 2L summer, or who, god forbid, weren't willing to put up with some other firm's shit (because hey, the next firm is just as bad and knows it)
Rick
Thanks to the Nazi issue with Brokeback Law Firm, I bet some lucky Cardozo students will get offers. Good PR and all that.
Even if you think the Charney lawsuit is garbage, S&C clearly has issues it needs to address (as these survey results suggest). It just doesn't seem like a very nice place to work (even by large law firm standards).
I mean, it's still S&C. I'm sure they'll do fine. The top 20 firms in the world have nothing to worry about. Nobody falls too far, any changes are incremental. People love drama, but here, there is none.
Note: I do NOT work at S&C
you guys are morons. i would hardly call making 1.6 million per lawyer (second only behind wachtell) and profits per partner at over 2.4 million as "bad news" for s&c.
EPIC FAIL. This has absolutely ZERO to do with the Charney case, except for Lat's increasingly lame attempts to tie any S&C news of any kind, no matter how remote, to Charney.
EPIC FAIL.
Gotta agree with epic fail on this -- these rankings are old news -- just a compilation of AmLaw data... and it ain't like S&C used to be near the top -- these rankings are showing signs of improvement over the last few years. And face it, the other top NYC firms (Cravath, Simpson et al) aren't exactly at the top in terms of associate or summer satisfaction, Charney or no Charney.
I think the only new info Charney's suit brings out is just how bad the M&A group is. I don't think the new revelations will sway someone who's heart is set on doing M&A at S&C, though.
