The Columbia Law Revue Redeems Itself

Congratulations to the Columbia Law Revue crew for putting on a great show, which we attended on Thursday night. We were lukewarm about some of their prior efforts, but our opinion has changed entirely.

Check out this great clip, a parody of this SNL video, which is currently #61 on YouTube in today's Top Favorites for Comedy:

Additional videos are available here. Enjoy!

P.S. Despite their video-making prowess, the CLSers are still a lost cause when it comes to the coolest law school competition. They're getting a beating at the hands of UVA (which, to be fair, also makes excellent video parodies).

As a UVa alum, I applaud our showing (as referenced above). But, out of respect to our fellow citizens of the Commonwealth down the road, I could do without the use of "killing", metaphoric or not, within the realm of higher education.

No one suggesting it is intentional, just insensitive.

Not as good as box in a box. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xElIik0Ys0

While this is funny, the main drawback is I have now seen 10 internet parodies of the SNL video.

And no, it's not anti-semetic. (And I'm Jewish).

Dude, NYU beat CLS fair and square. The reason UVA is kicking CLS's butt is because CLS is not cool. If NYU hadn't been disqualified for bogus reasons, UVA-NYU would actually be a contest. I would still like Lat to provide a little more detail on the cheating scandal. It was obvious that UMICH cheated as NYU went from leading to being down 75/25 in less than a day. How did NYU cheat?

I didn't think it was that funny, although I was impressed that they filmed in so many different places around campus -- including walking down the college's main walk and in an academic office (Registration Services). And all with a giftwrapped box attached.

It's not plagiarism. It's fair use. It's parody. You'd learn that in copyright class. It's also very funny. Good job, CLS law revue.

avatar
58 Posted by Gottafindmeahottiejewboy | Permalink Tuesday, April 17, 2007 3:00 PM

Plus the CLS guys are waaaaay cuter than those other guys. Beards or no beards. I think I found my chosen one!

For the record, "anti-semitism" is a loaded word and refers to grouping Jews together by genetic predisposition in a negative manner. This is different from "anti-Jewish" and, obviously, anti-Israel. Of course, you could argue that any sort of grouping by genetic traits is "negative" in the sense that stereotypes -- positive or negative -- hurt everyone, but that's besides the point. Depicting two characters who happen to be Jewish and like to eat / give bagels with lox does not fall into any sort of definition of anti-semitism... it's not even anti-Jewish. The silly movements, dances, and ideas in the video are clearly not a representation -- satirical or otherwise -- of Jews as a whole. They're simply two characters. If the two characters happened to be Christian, I doubt anyone would raise a stink. The fact is, the characters are Jewish and (believe it or not) are actually representations of RESPECTFUL Jews! Notice the hats! And the fact that the men never physically touch the woman. Very well done.

Any sort of argument that this representation is akin to "blackface" or 1950s depictions of Chinese-Americans is also way off-base, as those representatoins are inherently hurtful and loaded with prejudice.

If anything, I'm actually a bit surprised that no one has commented that the video might be taken to be a bit sexist. But since the characters are, after all, tru-to-life representations of Jews and Judaism is inherently anti-female, I suppose this, too, is expected.

Well done, boys!
