All Hail the Queen: Monica Goodling on Capitol Hill (Part 5)

Monica Goodling 4 Monica M Goodling sexy pose Above the Law blog.jpgBREAKING: Is the cool and collected Monica Goodling starting to crack, under the persistent and probing questioning of Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL)? Details after the jump (around the 3:25 mark).

3:08: Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) employs a too-clever-by-half strategy to try and get Monica Goodling to say that Alberto Gonzales should be fired. It falls flat.

3:12: Rep. Artur Davis asks Goodling specific questions about whether she believes various statements by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales about the firings were incorrect. He gets her to admit, multiple times, that the Attorney General's statements were inaccurate. Sometimes the simplest questions are best.

3:14: Oooh, Rep. Davis is definitely making inroads. John Dowd objects and asks to see the AG testimony being referenced. Rep. Davis slaps Dowd: "As I recall, you are not a participant in these proceedings."

Rep. Lungren (R-CA), clearly disturbed by the points that Davis is scoring, protests through a point of order. The Chair -- Sheila Jackson Lee, filling in for John Conyers -- overrules the point of order.

3:15: Rep. Lungren appeals the ruling of the chair. He is smacked down.

WOW, this is DEFINITELY heating up. More after the jump.

Goodling has asked for time to consult with her counsel. Jackson Lee says there will be a recess. But various members point out that there can't be a recess under parliamentary rules. Lots of raised voices and committee members talking over each other.

Parliamentary pandemonium. Exciting!!! Sheila Jackson Lee is looking pretty incompetent. Where's Conyers?

3:20: WTF? We are now having a roll call vote. But can someone remind us what this vote is for?

3:22: By a vote of 17-9, the motion to table passes.

3:24: Davis's questioning of Goodling resumes -- with time restored for all of the procedural hullabaloo.

3:25: Goodling is testifying about the circumstances of her departure from the DOJ. This could get very interesting...

3:28: Goodling testifies about a conversation she had with Attorney General Gonzales, concerning their recollections about U.S. Attorneygate, that may have been "inappropriate." She wasn't sure that "this was a conversation we should be having."

3:29: She has been poised and calm throughout the day. But is Monica Goodling, worn down by hours of testifying, starting to crack? Is her voice trembling? Is she about to sell the AG down the river?

3:32: All the Dems keep yielding their time to Davis. 'Cause they know this guy is GOOD -- professional, precise, prepared. And he's scoring some serious points in his questioning of La Goodling.

3:38: Congressman Artur Davis will be played by Terrence Howard in the made-for-TV movie about the U.S. Attorney firings scandal.

And what about Monica Goodling? Mira Sorvino might be too old; but Kate Bosworth might be too young.

3:43: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), a freshman legislator, should have ceded his time to Davis. But now he's trying to act all tough and macho, getting snippy with the witness, so he can look as "cool" as Davis. Give it up, Keith; you are no Artur Davis.

3:45: The Committee stands in recess. The members have been summoned for some votes.

I believe they are voting on whether Artur Davis can continue his line of questioning in light of Dowd's request to step in for his client.

Holy sh!t! She's basically saying that Gonzales tried to coach her recollection of the events.

Artur Davis shows HLS bests RLS.

Lat stop worshipping women and just become one already. Asian men do very well with sex change operations. So chop off that cock.

Artur Davis is a rock star. I bet he makes her cry.

Is there a word for gay guys who worship women? Here you have bleached blond cad spewing statements with dubious credibility and Lat can't get his tongue out of her ass.

"Is there a word for gay guys who worship women?"

Hag fags?

OMFG that was close bitch.

Agreed with 3:28. RLS is getting chomped by HLS (magna). You go Artur!

Monica was an SAUSA. How nice, a weak, pathetic, assclown.

She never tried a case, but "did some work."

Sweet. Make her fucking President.

She eats shit. And so does that fat, asswhore lawyer of hers.

Akin can eat butt crumbs.

This is taking me back to 1L year, CivPro, Larry Kramer showing me up in front of the class. _Ouch_. Saved by the bell.

Mmm SALSA.

Clearly, Tonya Harding will be playing Monica in the made-for-TV movie

OK, something's up b/c Lat is not staying abreast (oh yes i did) of the proceedings.
Someone please balance this out - what's happening?

Will someone PLEASE ask this fuckwit the most important questions: how many blumkins did she have to take to get that DOJ job?

And, someone please feed Rep. Lundgren to the angry illegals near his district.

That Muslim terrorist guy is questioning her now.

Terrence Howard would be the last person to play Artur Davis. Dig a little deeper Lat.

The Republicans are getting nervous that Ellison is going to start brandishing the Koran soon

Recess!

I'll see your blumkin and raise you a dirty sanchez.

i raise a dizzy gillespie and call.

I've seen her naked. Too bad I'm a homo.

folks, this is the worst liveblogging job ever. Lat's missing out on a majority of the substance in order to daydream which fabulous female will be playing goodling in a made-for-tv movie which would probably be just about the last made-for-tv project ever green-lit by whatever moronic network decides to green-light it. and obviously, Lat intends to be there post-movie, doing his best In Living Color - Men on Film shtick. I think Lat can do a good Daman Wayans.

After two terms in Congress, Alabama 7th District U.S. Representative Artur Davis has earned recognition as a productive and effective legislator who has set a new standard of service for his constituents. As Congressman Davis begins his third term, he is rapidly developing a national reputation as a thoughtful leader who is poised to influence the national debate.

In the 110th Congress, Davis has been appointed to one of the most prestigious committees in the House, the Ways and Means Committee. This committee oversees economic policy in a wide array of areas, including tax law, trade policy, and health care, as well as the Social Security and Medicare programs. Davis is only the tenth Alabamian to serve on this important committee in 188 years. Davis also holds a slot on the Judiciary Committee, which covers areas ranging from constitutional law to immigration to the criminal and civil justice systems.

Even before Democrats obtained the majority, Davis compiled a record of notable early successes. As a freshman, he led the successful fight to reverse funding cuts for minority land grant colleges including Tuskegee University and Alabama A&M. As a second term member, Congressman Davis won two floor fights to restore funding to the HOPE VI program for renovating public housing; he persuaded over sixty Republicans to vote with Democrats to save HOPE VI. In 2005, the congressman was the lead Democratic sponsor of a bill establishing a national cord blood bank, which will widen the availability of blood transfusions for thousands of patients who suffer from diseases such as sickle cell anemia and diabetes.

Congressman Davis’ strong legislative track record in Washington is matched with an active presence in his West Alabama district. He has chaired the Health Care Subcommittee of Governor Bob Riley’s Black Belt Action Commission, an effort that has led to expanded delivery of vital services throughout the Black Belt. The Commission has been heralded by various news organizations as one of the best public-private partnerships in the state’s recent history.

Recognized by the Washington Post, the National Journal and CNN as one of the future leaders to watch in Washington, Congressman Davis has been tabbed by his peers for several important assignments. He is currently the recruitment chairman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for the 2008 cycle. He is the co-chair of the centrist New Democrat Caucus, a group that emphasizes education and technological competitiveness. Congressman Davis also serves as a member of the House Majority Leader’s Advisory Group and as a member of the Steering and Policy Committee, which approves committee assignments and rules changes for the Democratic Caucus.

Born in 1967 in the impoverished neighborhood of West Montgomery, Alabama, Congressman Davis has built a career committed to excellence and the principles of hard work, which have propelled him his entire life. A product of Montgomery public schools, Congressman Davis excelled in academics, including graduating Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1990 and Cum Laude from Harvard Law School in 1993.

Congressman Davis' excellent academic career gave birth to a flourishing professional life as a successful attorney and advocate for justice. Upon graduation from law school, Congressman Davis received a clerkship with Judge Myron F. Thompson, one of the first African-American judges appointed to the federal bench in Alabama. From 1994 to 1998, Congressman Davis established a 98 percent conviction rate as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama fighting white-collar criminals and the scourge of drugs and violence on our streets and in our neighborhoods. From 1998 until his election to Congress, Congressman Davis worked as a litigator in private practice.

In both 2004 and 2006, Davis has won overwhelming reelection victories, capturing 91% in the Democratic primary in 2006, and running unopposed in November 2006.

Hey 3:48, if you want the substance sans Lattian commentary, watch it on cspan.org. This is ATL - did you forget that?

Ali Larter should play MGM in the Lifetime Original Movie, no question

I'll defend Lat. This blog is all about style over substance. There are plenty of sites with real, insightful analysis. This one is for the superficial.

Since it focuses on the superficial though, I wish it were a tad more objective.

Monica = Felicity Huffman in Transamerica

Artur Davis ought to be GOOD. He's double Harvard.

Artur is single....

who was the wacko member who warned others to take caution in their comments about regent university, lest they risk indictment for inciting hate crimes?

whoever, he was, i recommend he immediately commit suicide, to redeem the honor and dignity of the people in his district and all americans.

What's the deal with the missing "h" in Rep. Davis' first name?

i recommend the same course of action for most, if not all republicans, especially those that were hired by the DOJ after 2001

Speaking of racist DJ's, how about half of Congress appearing on Imus' show for years?

LAURA LINNEY

Armchair Litigator at 4:39 PM: Brilliant. Looks, demeanor, etc. Perfect.

There has been some disagreement about the propriety of hurling the "C" word at Goodling. Lord knows that I realize how wrong it is to use that vulgar word to describe a woman (my wife religiously reads this blog) and condemn those who have. Instead, to paraphrase a Paulie Walnuts' conversation with Christopher, perhaps, in the spirit of all getting along, we can agree that she should not have been so "cunty" at Justice.

417 - Gohmert?

4:17 is definitely referring to Gohmert. Lat's mockery:

"2:54: Rep. Louie Gohmert (R - TX) warns his colleagues that talking trash about Regent Law and other Christian universities could result in them being charged as principals under pending hate crime legislation."

"LOL. That may be the current frontrunner for Dumbest Remark of the Day."

REP. KELLER IS A DOUCHE AND A MORON!

REP. KELLER IS A DOUCHE AND A MORON!

U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert (TX-01)

Representative Louie Gohmert was first sworn in January 4, 2005 by Speaker Dennis Hastert as Congressman for the First District of Texas.

Louie Gohmert received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where he was Class President and served as a Brigade Commander of the Corps of Cadets. He was also Class President while attending Baylor School of Law. He is a veteran having served his country as Captain in the U.S. Army as a result of an Army scholarship at Texas A&M.

Prior to being elected to serve in Congress, Louie Gohmert was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County, Texas. During his tenure on the bench, Louie gained national and international attention for some of his innovative rulings. He was later appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to complete a term as Chief Justice of the 12th Court of Appeals.

Now into his second term in the House of Representatives, Louie is assigned to three key House committees which are beneficial to the citizens of east Texas: the House Committees on Judiciary, Resources and Small Business.

Having extensive judicial knowledge stemming from years in the court room, Rep. Gohmert is the only former judge on the Judiciary Committee. The Committee has jurisdiction over matters such as: constitutional issues, immigration, the Federal courts, crime, and law enforcement. Rep. Gohmert was named Deputy Ranking Member on the Judiciary subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security and also returns to the Judiciary subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims.

Rep. Gohmert's work within the House Committee on Natural Resources has proved valuable to East Texas with its wide array of natural resources. The Committee works to explore our natural resources and Louie will work to ensure America uses the affordable, domestic sources of energy we have at home while providing jobs for Texas. He serves as a voice for east Texas on two of the Committee's most important subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources as well as the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands.

Small businesses play a vital role in the economy of east Texas and the United States. Rep. Gohmert uses his assignment to the House Committee on Small Business to ensure small businesses are able to thrive and prosper without excessive federal government red tape.

At the beginning of the 110th Congress Gohmert was honored by being named the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight.

Louie Gohmert and his wife Kathy are the proud parents of three daughters. The Gohmert family attends Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, where Louie had been a deacon and still teaches Sunday school.

Having grown up in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, where he was an Eagle Scout, Louie has gone on to be an extremely active volunteer in numerous civic organizations in East Texas.
