Supreme Court Clerk Hiring Watch: OT 2008 (Update #1)
The Supreme Court hasn't yet finished up for October Term 2006 (which should end tomorrow). The law clerks for October Term 2007 will start arriving next month. But many of them have already started hiring clerks for October Term 2008.
We reported on some of those hires back in this post. And now we have more to add:
1. Conservatives hoping for his retirement will be disappointed. Rumor has it Justice John Paul Stevens has hired all of his clerks for OT 2008. The only one whose name we have, however, is Lindsey Powell (Stanford 2007 / Garland).2. Justice Antonin Scalia has hired Jameson Jones (Stanford 2007 / Sutton). Judge Jeffrey Sutton, a judicial superhottie, is turning into quite the feeder to his former boss.
3. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has hired at least one clerk for October Term 2008 -- Miriam Seifter (Harvard 2007 / Garland) -- and perhaps more.
So in terms of OT 2008, Stanford Law School and Judge Merrick B. Garland are off to a good start.

retired justices give speeches, sit on panels, and O'Connor does still ride circuit. don't know about the bonus issue

Stevens has also hired a clerk from Judge Black on the 11th Circuit.

The clerk for the retired justice is assigned to the chambers of an active justice and works as a full-time extra clerk for that justice. The active justices rotate who gets the extra clerk.

Does anyone else think it is odd to hire a SCOTUS clerk before he/she has even started their appellate clerkship? I mean, they could be TERRIBLE clerks, but the Justices would have no way of knowing (as the feeder judge had worked with them for what, a month, tops?).

Who cares? Show us the money! And 4:17 is wrong - though they can and do assist in regular work, lots and lots and lots of what they do is research and write for books, speeches, articles, etc.

Justice Stevens hired *three* from Garland. Other two are Jessica Bulman-Pozen (Yale) and Damian Williams (Yale).

Expect this to be a poor year for Chicago. Very few people in the class that just graduated clerked and of those clerking, only 2 or 3 are legitimate SCOTUS possibilities. Two already had interviews but presumably have not received an offer as of yet.

My class at Chicago had six SCOTUS clerks, but Chicago seems to go in waves. Given the hard curve, I assume it depends on having enough slackers in the class to float the other folks to the top. We have plenty of each. And they can thank me later.

Not sure whether Chicago's issues are temporary, or just another way things are declining under Levmore. When half the faculty leaves, of course the clerkship placement is going to be worse.

I'd guess temporary. Just judging from the number of people who applied for clerkships last year (very low) to those that are applying this year (very high) I would expect to see a lot of Chicago names on these lists at this time next year (or at least a lot of '08 grads ultimately working their way to SCOTUS).

Only 4 applicants from Chicago this year, so that's the ceiling. Quite possible this will be the first year in a while that nobody from there lands a golden ticket.
