Skadden DC: Slumming It in the Nation's Capital?
What the heck is going on in the Washington office of Skadden Arps? First we read about the firm's food stamp recipes, in the hallowed pages of the Washington Post. And now we read about the firm's in-house fashion show, also in a Post piece:
Legal secretaries, receptionists and an accounting supervisor strutted their stuff on a black runway last week, looking all shades of chic at the Washington headquarters of a major corporate law firm.In a twist on the seasonal reminder that flip-flops and T-shirts are considered inappropriate summer business attire, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom hosted a lunchtime fashion show on the 11th floor of its downtown offices to inspire employees.
Wearing styles on loan from nearby Filene's Basement, 12 staff members posed to "Glamorous" by Fergie, and Madonna's "Vogue." The clothes, from Claiborne to Klein, were chosen to fit each office personality.
We share the reaction of this reader:
It is a bit troubling that a law firm is giving any sort of fashion advice. It is even more troubling that they think an appropriate source of fashion is the discount retailer Filene's Basement. Skadden apparently doesn't share the wealth with its support staff.Sadly, having seen some Skadden partners who bring home $3 million+ per year, I can attest that they too look like Filene's Basement regulars.
Query: Was this article, as well as the earlier piece about the food stamp recipes, possibly planted in the Post's pages by publicists? If so, Skadden might want to think about retaining a new PR shop.
P.S. It's too bad this fashion show didn't take place at Akin Gump. We would have loved to see photos in the WaPo of the Akin Gump Escort, strutting her stuff on the runway.

Can we stop it with these "First" postings. It's not even funny.

Further proof that Skadden is ghetto. Could you imagine this happening at Davis or Simpson?

White Girls With Asian Guys.
At Simpson - yes. At Davis - no.

Fifth . . . that's kind of um . . . ironic.

Skadden + Filene's Basement = Bedbugs.

I'm a Biglaw associate and I just love FB on 14th and F in downtown DC. You cannot go wrong shopping there! They have everything for a fraction of the price. Particularly 2Xist underwear and the t-shirts emblazened with the latest ironic sayings. And I did find a swell pair of steve madden shoes there that made my day. Oh! And how can I forget about the seven jeans they have! You gotta go!

Come on, Skadden. Strike a pose!

Skadden + Akin Gump = secretaries moonlighting as prostitutes in cheap clothing

Does anyone else think there is something really inappropriate about a female only / staff only fashion show at a law firm?
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 10:55 AM
10:55,
No.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 11:00 AM
10:55 - I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure those who participated happily volunteered, but the whole thing is at least distasteful.
Anyway, I prefer to mentally undress the support staff in the privacy of my office.

Everyone know that the staff are the WORST abusers of the dress code. Jeans, flip flops, capri pants, it is just unprofessional. At least the lawyers look professional in their Khaki's and dress shirts.
Business casual for lawyers, suits for admins.!!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 11:01 AM
10:55 -- it is remarkably condescending. That said, it is precisely what I'd expect from a large NY firm.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 11:02 AM
10:55 - It was not female only fashion show:
"Vincent Atkins, a receptionist, swaggered on stage third-to-last . . ."
I don't think "Vincent" is a female.
So either 1) you need to polish up on your reading comprehension before ever posting again, or 2) you are so sexist as to belief that it must be female only since support staff must be female.

Hey 11:08, pull your head out of your ass, have a drink, and relax.

I can has ass crush? Tks k bye!!1!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 11:32 AM
10:55, yes, even though the women probably have fun at the fashion show, Skadden should destroy it and all other manifestations of gender differences in the interest of societal imposed gender equality!
Justice would be your house burning down and a female firefighter arriving to rescue you but is physically unable to carry your fat ass.

11:38, wow, you're an angry guy!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 12:15 PM
12:15, it drives me nuts when feminists post on this site criticizing women events at law firms that cater to stereotypes about women, i.e. reality. These events wouldn't happen if the very people they're trying to protect (women) didn't attend and enjoy them.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 12:23 PM
12:15 -- Of course she could also be an angry woman!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 12:24 PM
There are 3 men in the picture accompanying the article. 10:55, apparently you didn't actually read the article.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 12:29 PM
12:29 -- Either that or he/she was just trying to see if he/she could elicit the expected (angry and smug) responses from those who frequent this board.

Personally, I have more trouble with the fact that the models were all support staff and the attendees were lawyers.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 26, 2007 12:43 PM
Attendees were not lawyers. This was a fashion show for support staff and featured support staff. They all enjoyed it. There were men and women involved. I think it is good a firm organizes some fun activities for its support staff!
Posted by: anonymous | June 26, 2007 01:23 PM
It offends me that almost all of the models were Black. It looks like all the snooty soccer mom support staff made the Blacks in the office get dressed up and do a pony show for them. I aint yo' pony Bitch!

For the most part you posters are just bored, ignorant and jealous and it seems like you want to attack any and all things Skadden.
I used to work at Skadden- I don't any more (and there's a good reason for that)
But let me say that the staff there is very hard-working and very under-appreciated and an event like this is actually a nice way for them to all have fun. This isn't a bunch of Skadden partners strutting their stuff- this is a STAFF event- a bunch of lower middle class average folks who are having fun one day at the office. Picking on them is just mean.
And for the record, the attendees were not all lawyers. And there were alot of male participants- I recognize one guy- Melvin- he works in the mailroom.
So hate on Skadden all you want, but try to focus your comments on things that are actually bad about the place.

It offends me that almost all of the models are wearing clothing. It looks like the elite "clothists" in the office made their underlings dress up with actual clothes on and parade around for them. What is this world coming to when nudists get their constitutional rights trampled on like that?
