Nationwide Pay Raise Watch: Baker Botts Raises in DC

Baker Botts LLP Abovethelaw Above the Law legal blog law tabloid.JPGFrom a verified source in the Washington office of Baker Botts:

Today, Baker Botts DC's associates started receiving raise notices in the mail. They all appear to match the "real" DC market, not this V&E crap. Retroactive to July 1.

The notices only refer to the recipient's salary; there isn't a formal memo outlining all salaries, at least not one that I've seen yet.

So... What about Baker Botts back in Texas? Our Baker-DC source said:

I've heard nothing so far. The firm switched to the no-summary-memo trend after your site got popular. Coincidence? I doubt it.

If you have information about whether Baker Botts has raised base salaries for its Texas associates, please email us (subject line: "Baker Botts"). Thanks.

Update (6 PM): Apparently Baker Botts associates in Dallas have NOT yet received memos about raises.

LOCKE LIDDELL raising??

from a posting on findlaw's texas greedyassociates . . . apparantly quoting from an email:

"As communicated earlier, Locke Liddell & Sapp management has been studying the possibility of increasing associate salaries. It is always our intent to remain a competitive force in the marketplace, and to attract and keep top talent. Locke Liddell is increasing associate salaries in Texas and Washington, D.C., effective August 1, 2007. Base salaries will be $160,000 for first year associates and $170,000 for second year associates. We are still working on details of the compensation structure for the other associate classes, but we are committed to remain competitive."

Now that they have Harriet Miers back, Locke Liddell's future is blindingly bright.

I took the Texas bar exam as my second exam (after passing another bar). I studied for about a month while working and passed easily. If you can kick ass on the MBE, you can just blow off oil and gas (as long as you learn community property). It's really not that hard to pass.

Obviously F&J will be there soon. The interesting question is Jones Day, which was already at $150k.

First, will they match at all, and second, given the infrastructure at that place, could they raise fast enough to prevent losing summer associates with two offers?

avatar
32 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 5:55 PM

5:45: Get real, that list of shame was short because anyone who is anyone has matched in DC.

Tell me the names of the firms that haven't matched in DC. I bet nobody here will have even heard of them.

If random midsize or boutique firms haven't matched, that's not "shame"-ful. That's just life.

avatar
33 Posted by anonymous | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 5:57 PM

With the locals like BB, AK, VE, and soon FJ all going to 160 in Texas, Jones Day desperately needs to do something to distinguish themselves. If they match 160 flat, then they're essentially the same as the Tex firms but far behind the other non-Tex firms that pay that PLUS a year end bonus. But if they go to 165 or 170 that would just look weird (this is Texas still that we're talking about and they can't have TX assocs getting more pay than NY, DC, etc... but they still need to go above BigTX.

avatar
34 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:00 PM

Baker, Greenberg, Hunton, etc. are all not at 160 in DC

avatar
35 Posted by anon... | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:03 PM

One idea for Jones Day might be to join the other firms that they claim to be peers with (i.e. OMM, MoFo) and raise the clerkship bonus to 50k nationwide. Along with matching 160 k, that'd at least distinguish them from the locals. I don't think there's any question as to whether they'll match--- they will--- but 5:51 makes a good point: structurally, can they do it quickly enough to not lose out on recruiting.

avatar
36 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:05 PM

dont worry about recruiting...graduating law students are never in low supply

avatar
37 Posted by 5:55 | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:06 PM

Okay, I've heard of Hunton. But that "List of Shame" is still only three firms (two of them called out already).

it's true that graduating law students are never in low supply, but the students that BIGLAW firms want to hire ARE. So unless JD wants to resign itself to middle-of-the-class-at-SMU, they need to do something. (This isn't to say that middle-of-the-class-at-SMU aren't capable... just that law firms tend to be the worst prestige whores there are like to pride themselves on drawing the TOP grads).

there was some comment about Arent Fox raising to 160 in DC. Any memo to knock number 88 off the list?

avatar
45 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:17 PM

its obvious that some firms (not mentioning any names) need to change their rate structure...hence, attorneys in North Carolina should not be making as much as attorneys in NY, DC, and LA

avatar
46 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:21 PM

I hate to be a party pooper, but do we really want second-tier firms - firms outside the AmLaw or Vault top 50, say - straining themselves to pay $160K?

Isn't this just a recipe for Brobeck-hood?

Note that in 6:13's list of shame, almost all of those firms are 50-100 firms.

Can they really afford to raise?
