Summer Associate of the Day: The Katten Kreep

Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP Abovethelaw Above the Law legal tabloid blog.jpgHey kids, guess what? It IS possible to get fired from your cushy summer associate gig!

You need to try hard -- really hard. It's even harder than passing the bar exam.

But it's not impossible. This summer has already claimed at least one victim. Multiple sources advise that a summer associate in the Chicago office of Katten Muchin Rosenman was recently canned.

Read the dirty details, after the jump.

We heard this story a while ago, but we've held off on posting until now, in order to gather more information. What appears in this post comes from multiple sources.

We also wanted to given Katten a chance to weigh in. We contacted Michael Jacobson and Pamela Smith, the Katten partners in charge of recruiting in Chicago, to see if they might have any comment. They did not get back to us. Nor did the firm's media relations team.

So here's what we know. Please note that these are merely allegations:

1. A summer associate in the Chicago office of Katten was fired earlier this month (believed to be the week of July 9, 2007).

2. His employment was terminated because (a) he allegedly engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with female summer associates, variously described as "repeatedly smack[ing] the asses of female summers" or "playing grab ass with female summers," and (b) he allegedly made racially insensitive jokes, in front of multiple attorneys.

3. Katten held a meeting with the remaining summer associates to discuss the firing. The summers were told that "the firing was precipitated by a series of events." They weren't given all the details, but were told that "if they knew the details, they would be surprised that it took so long for them to fire the SA."

4. The entire SA class "was sworn to secrecy on pain of death." (Guess it didn't work out that well for them.)

Please note that this post does not mention the name of the summer associate in question. This is deliberate.

If you attempt to name the SA in the comments, your comment will be deleted (technically, "unpublished" -- this preserves your IP address in our records). If the comments here get unruly, we will close the thread.

As we've said many times before: YOU are responsible for your own comments. Above the Law assumes no responsibility for them. Thank you.

avatar

If they really admitted that they took to long for them to fire the SA, isn't that tantamount to asking someone to sue them for knowledge of harassment & doing nothing about it.

avatar
8 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 12:25 PM

Because KF put her name out there by emailing a group, telling people to pass the word along, and posting to a listserv.

Why? I know next to nothing about defamation, libel, etc., but if the information in the post is true, then nothing to worry about. If it's false, then omitting the name doesn't change that. The post notes that the stuff there is "merely allegations."

As I've said, I know nothing about the relevant law. If someone would care to enlighten me, that'd be sweet.

12:25 is right. Unless the SA in question decided to broadcast an email describing how he got shit-canned for smacking girls' asses, Lat is justified in withholding the name here even though he didn't w/ KF.

avatar
14 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, July 19, 2007 12:30 PM

That's usually the policy Lat follows. He deviates from it when:

(1) the person has already put her name out there (e.g., KF); or

(2) the person was previously named in an MSM outlet (e.g., Orrick dude).

I understand about redacting the name, but I for one am dying to know the guy’s 1. State of origin and 2. Law School.

This slapping of asses in the office is a most curious cultural manifestation.

Was the ass slapping by any chance done by the wearer of a 5 or 10 gallon cowboy hat? With the cowboy hat itself? Did the guy yell yeeeha! each time?

He pursued one woman until she filed a complaint with the school. He didn't get fired as a summer associate, but his firm ended up retracting an offer to come back permanently when the firm heard about his behavior. I guess the firm figured that he was a law suit waiting to happen.

I imagine few want to see this thread turn into a pissing match about football, with stats flying and such, but I'll say this:

Michigan isn't perfect, not even close; USC beat them soundly at the Rose Bowl; for at least the last 4 years USC has generally been a better team; lots of people are eagerly awaiting Carr's retirement; and Michigan did not deserve to go to the BCS title game last year. But to say the program is terrible, or bad, or even not good is just ridiculous. To call a team that is consistently (with a few off years, which every team has) one of the best in the nation terrible shows an irrational bias. Not perfect and problem free, but still a great program.

I not a fan of Notre Dame, or Ohio State, or USC (I'm from a UCLA family) but I can still freely acknowledge that all of those schools have great football programs.

Pac 10,

What was it, about (more than?) half the college football watching world (fans and talking heads alike) thought Michigan deserved to be in the title game last year? They were wrong, sure, but that says something and I think that something is more than "better than average."

Playing Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Wisconsin (throw in Iowa and MSU on their occasional good years) is not a cake schedule. Sure they play Illinois and Indiana, but overall the schedule isn't a cakewalk (go to espn.com or the BSC strength of schedule ratings from last year if you want to see numbers--Michigan's was considered tough).

And keep in mind that two or three years ago practically the entire Pac 10 was weak except for USC. Now Cal has gotten better, but it still isn't like a Pac 10 team has to face a giant every week, or even every other week.

OK, I'm done. Must work. Feel free to say whatever crazy stuff you want.

Big 10 superiority is a media created myth. Don't believe the hype. Did everyone here miss bowl season last year or something? Come on!

They used to be great, and now they are simply better than average. They can;t even beat their freaking rival!!!!!

They beat up on the dregs of their own conference and everyone thinks they are great. I don't believe they hype.

Would that be the bowl season where 2 big ten teams beat 2 SEC teams (largely regarded as the best conference in the country)?

The fact is that every BCS-conference has ups and downs through the years. It is also a fact that every BCS-conference has some patsies. If you look at bowl records, the Big East was the best conference last year.

Michigan is considered an elite program by every single serious football observer, just like 10 other schools. At least 110 Division I teams would gladly trade places with Maize and Blue.

For those out west, I have no brief with the claim that USC is something special. They are, no doubt. But they aren't the only ones.

More importantly, Lat, give us a compendium of summer associate stories. I would also gladly take a "greatest hits" post.

The really funny thing here is that no one is standing up for the SEC or the Big 12 (in terms of football certainly not academics).

Last year a SA was asked to leave Paul Hastings LA mid summer after a run in w/ a partner & remarks. From USC?

5:39 - I didn't read anything saying the SA fired was necessarily a 2L. Maybe that 1L is the one.

For all the ninnies here getting their panties in a wad over the Big10, you all need to go rewatch last year's Fiesta Bowl and see what a real football team looks like. That's right, Boise State all the way!

Why attribute so much veracity to one post saying that the school has a great football team? We're legal-minded people, folks. I think the presumption should be that one allegation isn't enough to come to a definite conclusion.

Boise State? Last time I checked, Boise is a city and not a State. Too bad staying in school past 4th grade isn't mandatory in Idaho or you'd have figured that out by now.

All I know is that the last time Nebraska played Michigan, the Huskers won. And they should have won the entire 1997 championship too.

I think it's great that Nebraska has taken it easy for a few years so other teams like USC, Ohio State, Michigan, and Florida could borrow the limelight. The Huskers are back in '07!

Boise State means it's a State university that's located in Boise, moron! Maybe if they taught grammar at Cornell you'd be smart enough to figure that out. But even w/o advanced english language skills you might have tried some empirical research and found schools like:

Adams State College
Alcorn State University
Angelo State University
Appalachian State University
Athens State University
Augusta Sate University
Humbolt State University
San Diego State University

Maybe then you could have concluded that Boise State University meant a state university in Boise rather than the university of the state of Boise. Or, maybe they just don't teach us geography out here in Idaho and I've been decieved all along in to believing there were only fifty states. So, I'd be much obliged if you could please point me to the state of Kent, otherwise get a life and go ask your fancy TTT Ivy League school for your money back.

Boise State all the way!
