Biglaw Perk Watch: Massages
The individual who ran this Google search presumably isn't at Sidley Austin. Because if he were, he wouldn't have gotten fleeced on his massage. From a tipster:
Sidley is now going to have chair massages every Friday. They come by on Fridays for 5 hours; you have to make an appointment. While it's not free, $1/minute isn't a bad price at all. I can see myself having a regular 20 minute massage to end my week.
We agree. A dollar a minute, or $60 an hour -- not that you'd have a 60-minute chair massage, it's just for purposes of comparison -- is much cheaper than what you'd pay at a halfway decent day spa.
A dollar a minute is also less expensive than calling a 900 number (which Cravath lawyers are known to do). But then again, the Sidley chair massages probably don't include happy endings.
Does your firm offer massages or other forms of stress relief? Please discuss, in the comments.

In addition to massage, Wilmer offers hand releases to all male associates every Friday afternoon.

L2L,
Maybe you could get that Wilmer hand release job. It will be the closest you ever get to biglaw, son.

Do you think if I called Sidley and forwent the massages, other perks, and offered to work for 80k they would hire me?

This doesn't sound like that much of a deal. I can get a table massage at a spa in Chicago for $45 for 30 minutes.
Table massage >> chair massage

Actually, if you hold your blackberry and shoot some emails while getting massaged, you could bill that hour. Thus, your client would effectively be paying for your massage. It is win, win.

Hunton does this from time to time in some of their offices.

Maybe if someone sprung for some massages for the members of Latham's Comp. Committee, they would cease to be such tight asses. Perhaps then they would finally pay a market clerkship bonus.
You know what? Better include a happy ending just to be on the safe side.

Skadden DC has massages.

Do guy-on-guy massages really occur at any Biglaw shops? No self-respecting Biglaw attorney is that sure of his heterosexuality to try that out in the office.

CHEMICAL MASSAGE FOR YOUR GUT.

This perk is not limited to private practice. When I worked as an AUSA, we had a masseuse come every few weeks for chair massages. Same deal - $1 a minute. I think it was arranged through a friend on the support staff.

Fulbright in NY has massages every Friday - $18 for 15 minutes.

Orrick NY has a massage person come in. It's on Thursdays, but it might be every other one. I think it's 15 bucks for 15-30 minutes.

LLLLLAAAAATTTTTHHHHHAAAAAMMMMM????????????????????????????????????????

Kilpatrick in DC had the same deal about two years ago (staff could sign up as well). It's really not as good as it sounds (?--does it even sound good?); it's basically the massage equivalent of having some shoe shine guy walk around the office. They've since stopped due to lack of want by the lawyers or the staff.

My wife's firm does this for free. It's a small firm, so there aren't as many people, I'm sure. But still...

Is this Sidley NY, or Chicago?
Posted by: Anonymous | August 16, 2007 12:27 PM
Sidley Chicago. I have heard staff talking about getting the massages, but haven't heard any lawyers talking about getting one yet.

My mid-sized boutique firm in L.A. does this every week on thurs or weds. 15 min for $15. Haven't tried it yet, though.

In my opinion, this is a staff perk (I'm fairly sure my secretary took advantage of it). I have better things to do than waste 20 minutes getting a cheap chair massage. If I'm getting a massage, I want the best, not the cheapest.
That said, what spa is giving you a $45 30-minute table massage, 10:41?
Posted by: Anonymous | August 16, 2007 12:55 PM
@12:55
You have to head to the burbs for that price (but if you do there are lots of options). At the end of a long day/week it can be nice.

Sullivan & Worcester in Boston offers Chair Massages. I believe it's a monthly perk. And the firm subsidizes a good chunk of it.

I clicked on the prior Cravath 'best conference call' link (funny story) and who isn the first whiner, er, poster: Loyola 2L with this:
"They make $3.99/minute? That's $3.99/minute more than I'll make this summer.

I have worked at a couple of different firms that offer this benefit and had assumed that it was a pretty standard perk.
With that having been said, I agree with 12:55 that it is typically a perk used by the staff, not lawyers. The last thing that I need is a firm-sponsored yoga class or massage to help relieve my stress. The only thing that relieves my stress is getting the hell out of my office as soon and as often as possible.

A&B DC has a shoe shine guy, which totally makes up for the below market pay. You can even pay him a $1 to sing Mr. Bojangles and do a little dance.

at cadwalader, they hire a masseuse on paydays, but you also have the option of dating every female assistant on your floor.

Manatt DC has chair massages on Fridays. And breakfast Friday mornings. Aww.

I would absolutely love this. My former firm arranged for chair massages once a year for staff. I'd gladly pay for a chair massage in the middle of the day . . . much easier than me going out to get accupuncture in the middle of the day and having my blackberry buzzing away in my purse.

Most silicon valley offices offer tables massages, and if you go in-house at a tech company, they all have subsidized massages in massage rooms.
Posted by: Anon | August 16, 2007 05:05 PM
that's awesome. i was a dumb-ass...they had that perk where i worked this summer, too...but i didn't take advantage of it. i should have...when i come back next fall, i think i'm going to put the chair massages on speed dial.
