Clerkship Bonus Watch: Dechert Joins the $50K Club
From a little bird, er, law clerk:
A friend going to Dechert in Philly informed me that this year's incoming class is receiving a $50k clerkship bonus.
Hearsay? Sure. But we then checked the Dechert website, which provides official confirmation:
Judicial Clerkship BonusEffective September 2007, we will pay a $50,000 clerkship bonus to incoming associates who join the firm upon completion of a federal court clerkship.
Are you aware of clerkship bonus news that we haven't previously reported? If so, please email us (subject line: "Clerkship Bonus Watch"). Thanks.

Does MLB offer the same? If the don't, expect them to within a week.

What about all the other firms in the city?

Kind of unrelated, I know, but does anybody have any tips for a fed dist ct clerk who did very well at a weak (but "national") law school interviewing at a Vault 6-10er firm (NY office)? Come on, I'll buy you some new deodorant.

Law school interviews are rarely "hardhitting". The interviewer knows that you know nothing about the practice of law.
Follow the interviewer's lead. If the interviewer isn't talking about work, then don't talk about work. If the interview is talking about work, then talk about work.
Read the law firm's website. Learn a little about the place. Have some pat answer about why you want to go there. "Industry leading work". "Cutting edge work". "Great training". "Heard great things about the people". It doesn't matter what the answer is, but have a rehearsed answer that can be ignored or forgotten later.
Then don't drool on yourself or act too smug. Definitely don't give an air that you are "entitled" to the job. Entitlement seems to be the number 1 complaint I am hearing this Fall with interviewing.

A $50K bonus is nice, but Dechert in Philly is still (like the rest of Philly) only at $145K.
Posted by: anon | September 7, 2007 03:11 PM
Philly will not move past 145k.... Actually, only 4 firms in philly are at 145k, the rest are 135 and lower.

Gibson? Have they raised to match this yet? We all know Latham's pathetic stance, so hopefully Gibson shows them who's boss.

SHEARMAN SUCKS!!!!!!!

Has anyone going to Gibson talked to the firm lately about its bonus policy?
Posted by: Anonymous | September 7, 2007 04:01 PM
does anyone know what hangley, pepper and ballard give for clerkship bonus? i mean, morgan is going to go to 50k. but the others?
Posted by: want some | September 7, 2007 04:17 PM
Rumor has it that Gibson has decided to raise to $50K, but EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2008. Gibson bested by Dechert. Sad, truly sad.

Lat, I beg of thee: give Gibson a call and help sort this nonsense out!

Didn't Latham already raise to a real $50K (not this bar stipend BS)?
Posted by: Anonymous | September 7, 2007 06:47 PM
Yes, Latham raised to 50K effective Jan. 1, but they nixed the stipend for clerks (a clerkship penalty of sorts) meaning the clerkship bonus is effectively only 37K.

7:46 - are you kidding? wow, that sucks for any clerks going there this year, when firms like Dechert (no offense) are paying $50k.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 7, 2007 08:54 PM
Yeah, Shearman does suck, unless you're in their London office...

4:17-
i don't think any other firm's clerkship bonus comes close to Dechert's in Philly. hopefully this will force the others to reexamine...i think dechert's was only $15k or so previously. other philly firms are still around that level, i believe.
and honestly, after paying $25 for a short cab ride in NYC this week, i'd take philly's $145k and $6 rides.

Trust me, this bonus isn't directed to the Philadelphia office, which has been bleeding litigation associates for the past six months. They've raised the bonus to remain competitive in NY and DC.
It's beginning to dawn on Phila litigation associates tied to the geographic region that 1) their chance at even salaried partnership is next-to nil and 2) there are a number of other Phila shops that pay the same or near enough to Dechert's salary+bonus that staying in that miserable atmosphere is just not worth the "prestige" of the Dechert name.

I know this is a bit off topic but How is Dechert's Princeton office? And if anyone knows, how is MLB's Princeton office?
