Last I saw, hurtful words were not a defense for assault, no matter how hurtful they were.
Its awful that someone hung nooses from a tree, but that doesn't give anyone a right to attack someone else.

2:11-- Unfortunately the media didn't really covered the whole story-- I learned most about this case from advocacy websites.
Much of the outrage is at the fact that a series of white on black attacks went unpunished. There has been no equality under the law in Jena: A white student broke a bottle on a black student's head at an off campus party... nothing. A young white man with a shotgun threatened black students with a gun-- they wrestled the gun away from him and then were subsequently arrested for theft of the gun. It is ridiculous enough that students were charged with attempted murder after beating up a kid that got out of the hospital and went to a social event later that evening-- but coupled with racial incidences that were basically a slap in the face to black students make it even more crazy.
The nooses were the catalyst of the racial tension, further escalated by the DA's response to black students sitting under the "white tree" to protest the nooses: he came to the school accompanied by the town's police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, "I can be your best friend or your worst enemy... I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen." This is a message that should not have been sent, but if at all to the students who hung the nooses. Instead, the nooses were a prank and peacefully protesting racism was a problem. That DA is out of control-- should be fired immediately!
