An S&C Bonsai Beauty Pageant!
After the jump, you'll see six photographs of Sullivan & Cromwell bonsai trees. Some of these pics have been previously featured in these pages, and some are new. Based on subtle differences between the plants, it appears that S&C may be using different florists around the country to disseminate these gifts to its offerees.
We will now hold a bonsai beauty contest, allowing you to vote for your favorite example of S&C bonsai porn. The differences in the photos are interesting. Just like real pornography, some bonsai porn aims to titillate, some aspires to art, and some just looks fuzzy and low-budget.
Check out the bonsai pics, and cast your vote, after the jump.

Lat, I thought someone was going to delete these annoying "first" people. There was a period that it was getting controlled, but they've come back.
Lat, please make them go away.

How many of us would even know what a Bonsai tree was if it weren't for the Karate Kid?

How many bonsai posts is Lat going to make?
Lat, there are stories out there. There are interviews out there. Get on it dood!
Posted by: anon | October 17, 2007 01:36 PM
2 and 3 are the same plant as are 4-6.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 01:36 PM
4,5,6 are all the same, no? Maybe that's the idea: reflect the billing policy in the gifts to associates. Indoctrinate the young'uns ASAP.

This is truly scraping the bottom of the barrel. PLEASE do us a favor and write about something interesting. This is not worth a second of anyone's time.

Lat, can you delete these annoying posts asking you to delete the annoying "first" posts? Thanks.

"This is truly scraping the bottom of the barrel. PLEASE do us a favor and write about something interesting. This is not worth a second of anyone's time."
Lat's life is potential unrealized. Here he has eyes, and a forum. Rather than doing good stories, complete with interviews (there are tons of good stories out there), he does bonsai posts.
The only hard working thing on his site is the Loyola 2L shtick.

First year Salary at Wachtell: 160K+ enormous bonus.
Money earned from Abovethelaw: Far less.
Thinking about the fact that I left powerhouse Wachtell to post about Bonsai's: Priceless.

1:08 --> Why do you care whether someone post "first"? Maybe b/c you are never first? Eat one big man
Posted by: Firsty McFirsterson | October 17, 2007 01:55 PM
Can you do a post about people who comment "First" to a post. It would be neat to see what kind of demographic these people come from.
I am guessing TTT law students, but it is probably BigLaw partners who like to read Gossip Blogs.

The lighting for Number two makes it classy, and yet ever so slightly risque. it gets my vote hands down

Enough with this filler - can we get the promised K&E update?
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 02:00 PM
I think we can do away with the Bonsai trees. The last four pictures don't even show any S&C indicia. How do we know they are even sent by S&C, Lat?
If you're going to make such a meaningless post, while pushing the information about K&E to the back-burner, you should least be able to verify that all S&C Bonsai tree contest participants are eligible to compete.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 02:00 PM
Did Bonsai 1 have its offer recinded as well? I mean, it was the one who slapped Bonsai 3.
WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THIS?
ps--Thanks for the memories 1:27.
pps---"First" posts rule.
ppps--Don't taze me bro.

Parker Posy Florists
145 East 72nd Street
New York, NY
Dear Ms. Posy:
We specifically ordered DARK green bonsai trees for our offerees, designed to precisely match the shade of money. That is what you promised us. But the ones you delivered are a MEDIUM shade of green. That is simply unacceptable and has completely ruined the messge we wished to convey.
You owe us $9,000,000 in actual damages, plus another $400,000,000 in punitives.
Elana
PS: We express our thanks to our associate David Lat, who tirelessly collected photographs documenting your imcompetence.

1:36 is correct about 4-6 at least. The same freaking plant.
Posted by: Anon | October 17, 2007 02:20 PM
Classic @ 2:00 -- You don't get it. Bonsais One and Three are THE SAME BONSAI tree, just shot from different angles!!! They couldnt have slapped each other.
And Five and Six aren't even S&C bonsais at all - just some random bonsais from other law firms. Or maybe not even from any law firm at all - did anyone consider that??
The people are so clueless! Laaaaaaaattt!!!

Dale & Thomas popcorn? Crap I want some of that!

Worst. Post. Ever.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 02:23 PM
Before the internet, what did people do when they were overcome by the urge to look at photos of other people's plants? I know that whenever that bug bites me (several times a day), my first reaction is to fire up a web browser and hit the law blogs.
Seriously, wtf?

This post was Merck's idea, wasn't it?
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 02:24 PM
Clarifying:
Two and three are the same tree. NOT one and three.
Vote for 2!

White Guys With Bonsai Trees?
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 02:49 PM
This is completely idiotic. That said, I love it.
Also: Lat never said they were all different trees. They are different photos.

Hey 1:27...I would have won a trip to Hawaii if I had remembered that Belding loves Bonsai trees.

Bonsai Contestant 2 is a pageant patty: the garish lighting, the big contestant badge, the pose. Bonsai Contestant 6 is fresh, unscripted, and beautiful, and therefore gets my vote.
(Also, who gets to live on a lake when at law school? Totally unfair.)
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2007 11:57 PM
They all suck. You cannot just stick a juniper seedling in a fancy pot and call it "bonsai." You would think a firm as big as S&C could spring for something a little better then mail order gift catalog "bonsai."
Posted by: JamesT | October 18, 2007 08:34 AM
The garish lighting makes it. So stark, so ironic. Number two (the existential bonsai) has it all the way.
