Biglaw Perk Watch: Flu Shots!

flu shot injection syringe inject Above the Law blog.jpgOur parents keep reminding us to get a flu shot (which we haven't gotten yet this year). If we worked for a law firm, maybe we wouldn't have to worry about this. From a tipster:

My firm provides flu shots for all of its employees every flu season. I was wondering if this was typical.

The idealist in me wants to think that the firm actually cares about my health and well-being. On the other hand, the skeptic in me believes the firm doesn't want me to get sick so that I won't miss work.

They make you sign a consent form (of course).

Forget about the free iPhones and subsidized gym memberships. Flu shots are clearly what separate the men from the boys.

So... does YOUR firm furnish free flu shots? Please discuss, in the comments.

Is this how far the perk chats have degenerated? Does anyone really care? Is someone going to lateral because of this?

I think reception area couches should be the next topic.

My firm does free flu shots. One year they tried to make us pay half of the cost - something like $12, and the associates revolted. After the protests, the firm gave them for free.

avatar
Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:05 PM

My firm gives them, but I've never gotten one. Instead, as a first year, I broke open a thermometer, poured the mercury into a quart of orange juice, and drank it. I figure that would just be easier than waiting in line and getting jabbed in the arm every year with some bs vaccine that only 90 year old people should be getting.

Where's the perk watch on which firms have copy machines on every floor?

Also, the comments are turning out to be pretty entertaining.

At my firm, only the librarian gets a flu shot, because she is hot. Is that a perk? Two perks?

K&E (chicago) charges.

avatar
Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:11 PM

Is my firm a market leader, or do other firms provide associates with air, too?

We should also have a thread on whether BigLaw firms offer direct deposit of paychecks. You know, to help law students make their decisions.

avatar
Posted by Tracey | Permalink Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:12 PM

My firm gives them, and yes, part of it is for their own benefit. Not just so that *you* won't get sick and miss work, but also so that you won't contract it, spread it around to everybody in the firm and make *everybody* miss work! We also provide flu shots for spouses and I think also children over a certain age. No charge.

You need to do a real perk post - who has microwaves on each floor? And are you allowed to make popcorn or does that violate a local "smell rule."

avatar
Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:17 PM

I'm hoping that's just a hairy ass. For a second there those almost looked like veins, which would be far, far nastier.

Poor judgment on the photo, Lat. And that's saying something--I didn't have any problems with the breastfeeding pic.

If by "flu shot" you mean another kind of shot and you get to do it, then, yes.

How about an FF&E/TI perk watch?

I'll start - my firm gives associates desks, chairs, and carpeting. We have to paint our own walls before we move in, though. Do any firms out there paint associates' office walls for them?

avatar

Lat, don't listen to the haters about the photo. I think it looks fairly prestigious.

avatar

We have multiple copiers on every floor and free lunches catered on Fridays for all lawyers, and we bring in the Visitng Nurse deal du jour to give the flu shots in one of our conference rooms, but we make everybody that wants one pay the 22 bucks!! I thought that we were progressive; well up goes the 2008 perk budget I guess.
