Hey ATL Readers: Help Rename Boalt Hall!

Boalt Hall UC Berkeley Law School Above the Law blog.jpgAttention, ATL readers -- your wit and wisdom are needed. From Cal Law (via Blogonaut):

Boalt Hall School of Law has hired San Francisco brand consulting firm Marshall Strategy Inc. to poll students, faculty, alumni and others in aid of devising a “single brand” name for the school, a Boalt spokeswoman said.

San Francisco Bay Area locals call the school Boalt Hall. But outside of California, that colloquialism often draws blank looks. Thus, what has been dubbed the “identity project”—to come up with a more readily identifiable name for the prestigious law school.

The school officially goes by University of California, Berkeley School of Law, according to spokesperson Susan Gluss. But in its its newsletters, Web pages, and other places, there are "about a dozen different names and iterations."

Speaking of "a dozen different names," that's what we'd like from you. In the comments to this post, please offer suggested new names for Boalt Hall. We'll pick the ten or twelve we like the most, hold an ATL reader poll, and forward the winning nomination to the Boalt Hall administration, for its consideration.

Our personal nomination: the Marsha Berzon School of Law, named after the distinguished and delicious Ninth Circuit judge (and Boalt Hall alumna). But whether our pick prevails will be up to you, the readership, when we hold the poll. We look forward to receiving and reviewing your nominations.

Josh Keesan Joshua Keesan Berkeley Law School Boalt Hall Above the Law blog.jpgP.S. While we're talking about Boalt Hall, an ATL shout-out to the talented (and handsome) Josh Keesan, Boalt '09, who composes and performs clever songs with legal themes. From a tipster:

Forget Nixon Peabody, Boalt has the newest singing sensation. Check it: www.joshkeesan.com.

This kid is the love child of Oliver Wendell Holmes and John Mayer. Plus, in the aftermath of the Nixon Peabody atrocity, your readers need something to cleanse that awful taste in their mouths/ears.

He's taken Boalt by storm. The screams of his groupies at the annual public interest auction last year were deafening. So, give the West Coast some love, and post it!

More about Josh Keesan from the WSJ Law Blog. Maybe Boalt Hall could be rennamed the "Josh Keesan School of Law"?

avatar

For a while there was talk of calling it the "Earl Warren School of Law" but that probably poses the same identitification problems that "Boalt Hall" does.

If recognition is really what they're after, why would anything but "Berkeley" be best? Either stick with Boalt until it catches on, like Wharton at Upenn, or just go back to the school's universally known name.

I don't get it -- no law schools go by a brand name -- that's a business school thing. Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, NYU, etc. vs. Wharton, Stern, Fuqua, Haas, Tuck. Sure, there are exceptions, but why mess with tradition? Stick with Berkeley School of Law. There's no way a different name is ever going to sound anything but less prestigious.

Accidental e-mail congratulates 7,000 on admission to UC Berkeley law school

Edward Tom, director of admissions at the University of California, Berkeley, law school, was training a new office worker when it happened.

Tom was demonstrating the e-mail software used by the school and was highlighting several features, including how the user can filter mail and set it to send messages to one recipient or many at the same time.

That’s when he chose what happened to be a standard congratulatory message on being admitted to the university’s prestigious law school and accidentally sent it to all 7,000 students who have applied for admission to the law school.

The problem, which the school quickly admitted, is that all of the applicants won’t be admitted. In fact, there’s only room for 800 to 850 of them. The e-mail congratulated the applicants on their recent “admission” to the school and invited them to an annual reception co-hosted by alumni and several student organizations.

I don't understand why they want to refer to the school by its own name, rather than the name of the larger institution. Other schools don't have that level of arrogance. Nobody would know where you went if you said you had a law degree from King Hall or J. Reuben Clark school of law, but everyone knows UC Davis and BYU.

I assume they're going for international recognition, so it's not super-relevant that American lawyers know what Boalt means.

By the same token, Cal is an international university, so they will want to attach to that.

So I would think UC Berkeley Law School {colloquially, BLS} or UC Law School at Berkeley {Cal Law} is the winner.

OK, if there is a name change, will Boalt recall and reprint all of those prior diplomas?

Or will they handle it with a “formerly know as Boalt Hall School of Law” appended to the new name?

Any thoughts on how this might work?

Prior name changed law schools:

• SMU to The Dedman School of Law in 2001

• The Detroit City Law School to Wayne State University Law School in 1938

• The law school at Michigan State University is now named the MSU College of Law as of 2004

• And of course the infamous renaming forced by The Ralph R. Papitto Law School’s namesake’s use of the N-word while discussing “the difficulty of finding people of color to serve on the university's 16-member board”.

None of these examples are much help here......

The illusive quadruple post! Sorry about that guys, not trying to be annoying. My browser kept getting stuck, and I wasn't sure if it was going through.

7:38, Bill Gates already has the University of Washington School of Law named after him. Well, actually it's his dad, but they share the same name, and we all know who bank rolled the effort.

Problem is that "California Law School" sounds like some unaccredited law school. And the University of California Law School is fine, but nowadays the prestigious part is *Berkeley.* The undergrad calls itself UC Berkeley; the law school should call itself UC Berkeley Law School, Boalt Hall or UC Berkeley School of Law, Boalt Hall. Avoiding the "Berkeley" will confuse non-Californians; throwing out the Boalt Hall will confuse everyone who currently knows the school (University of California Law School? Where is that? Berkeley? Is that the same as Boalt Hall?) and anger the alums.

My vote is for "The People's Republic of California Law Center," but really, who cares whats on a t-shirt? I'll never personally call my school anything but Boalt, because anyone who I'm going to be working for is going to immediately understand me. Go for it Dean, change whatever you want, I know where I am.

Anyone who counts knows "Boalt Hall." Speaking as a former alum of "Boalt Hall," I strongly object to the name, "Marsha Berzon School of Law" -- not everyone that went to Boalt was a liberal. And, if you really want a liberal judge who was an alum, why wouldn't you go with something like, the "Earl Warren School of Law." He was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after all.

Enough with Boalt already. We need to move to rename Georgetown's law school ... um ... center. Georgetown University Law Center sounds like a clinic for homeless folk (not that there's anything wrong with such a facility -- just wouldn't want to go to school there). "GULC" doesn't exactly work either. Why can't it just be Georgetown Law School. Or maybe "G-Law." You know, something pithy ... like Boalt.

The question really isn't whether the school should rename itself, obviously its official name (Univ. of Cal. Berkeley School of Law) should remain the same.

The question is what name they would like to be referred to in short, Berkeley or Boalt. I propose Berkeley, simply because it is more recognizable.
