Hey ATL Readers: Help Rename Boalt Hall!
Attention, ATL readers -- your wit and wisdom are needed. From Cal Law (via Blogonaut):
Boalt Hall School of Law has hired San Francisco brand consulting firm Marshall Strategy Inc. to poll students, faculty, alumni and others in aid of devising a “single brand” name for the school, a Boalt spokeswoman said.San Francisco Bay Area locals call the school Boalt Hall. But outside of California, that colloquialism often draws blank looks. Thus, what has been dubbed the “identity project”—to come up with a more readily identifiable name for the prestigious law school.
The school officially goes by University of California, Berkeley School of Law, according to spokesperson Susan Gluss. But in its its newsletters, Web pages, and other places, there are "about a dozen different names and iterations."
Speaking of "a dozen different names," that's what we'd like from you. In the comments to this post, please offer suggested new names for Boalt Hall. We'll pick the ten or twelve we like the most, hold an ATL reader poll, and forward the winning nomination to the Boalt Hall administration, for its consideration.
Our personal nomination: the Marsha Berzon School of Law, named after the distinguished and delicious Ninth Circuit judge (and Boalt Hall alumna). But whether our pick prevails will be up to you, the readership, when we hold the poll. We look forward to receiving and reviewing your nominations.
P.S. While we're talking about Boalt Hall, an ATL shout-out to the talented (and handsome) Josh Keesan, Boalt '09, who composes and performs clever songs with legal themes. From a tipster:
Forget Nixon Peabody, Boalt has the newest singing sensation. Check it: www.joshkeesan.com.This kid is the love child of Oliver Wendell Holmes and John Mayer. Plus, in the aftermath of the Nixon Peabody atrocity, your readers need something to cleanse that awful taste in their mouths/ears.
He's taken Boalt by storm. The screams of his groupies at the annual public interest auction last year were deafening. So, give the West Coast some love, and post it!
More about Josh Keesan from the WSJ Law Blog. Maybe Boalt Hall could be rennamed the "Josh Keesan School of Law"?

UC Berkeley Law School?
Too obvious?
Berkeley Law School, all the way
Figgity first! Why can't they just stick with Boalt? Anyone who knows anything about law schools recognizes that name.
For a while there was talk of calling it the "Earl Warren School of Law" but that probably poses the same identitification problems that "Boalt Hall" does.
If recognition is really what they're after, why would anything but "Berkeley" be best? Either stick with Boalt until it catches on, like Wharton at Upenn, or just go back to the school's universally known name.
UC Berkeley Law School?
Too obvious?
Edwin Meese School of Law.
Ted Olson School of Law.
(Both are Boalt alumni.)
The John Yoo Institute of Diplomacy and Torture?
Based on the Boalt grads I've known, the "White Guys with Asian Girls School of Law" would be pretty accurate....
The Sandy Cohen School of Law
Double Post School of Law?
Based on the Boalt grads I've known, the "White Guys with Asian Girls School of Law" would be pretty accurate....
Double Post School of Law?
Berkeley United Leftist Law School of Highly Instructive Teachings. The acronym will have plenty of name recognition.
Boalt Berkeley School of Law
BoalTTT Hall.
The Coca-Cola Boalt Hall Law School at the University of California - Berkley
Bloat Hall has an appetizing ring.
When I think of Berkley, I just think of naked hairy hippy students. Accurate?
CAL LAW.
You heard it here first.
Naked Hippie School of Law

"The Che Guevara School of Law"
Dolt hall.
"T1 Loyola + Job Prospects School of Law"
Hey! Boalt only has a couple of hairy hippies each year! And Naked Guy has been gone for ages!
Funny, when I think of "Berkley," I think of poor spelling skills.
University of California---Berkeley

GO BEARS!
49ers Law School
At least the haters should spell bErkElEy properly.
Count 'em: three E's.
I'd like it to be Cal Law, but I've been hearing Berkeley Law. Goes with the rest of the university's campaign/ identity as "Berkeley" when referring to academics, merely "Cal" when referring to sports.
You MUST include berkley in the name. There is a great deal of brand equity there.

Berkeley-Boalt Hall School of Law
My husband, who is a terrible person, calls it Jerkeley School of Law for Jerks, saying that we should be called J-SOL-J and our mascot should be the J-SOLJier. He's just jealous because he goes to a TTT school that accidentally gets ranked higher than Berkeley each year.
The People's College of Law . . . Oh wait.
UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law
5:20... I don't get it. That name is too obvious or something?
U.C. Berkeley School of Law. Is there really another option?
(But I think they should keep the Boalt Hall name. Anyone who matters knows it.)
Golden Bear School of Law. . . maybe Nicklaus could be Dean Emeritus.
Berkeley Law: Nuts and Boalts
Western Hofstra School of Law
5:07 - You are right about the bad spelling of Berkeley. Since we are already changing the name lets change the spelling too. I propose Berkely Law.
This would of course not solve the confusion as it would be Berkely Law at Univ. of California - Berkeley.
THE* University of California Law School
*(not to be confused with UCLA, Davis, Hastings or Irvine)
The 20% Asian School of Law
The Boalt Hall Law School of Anaheim. I mean Berkeley.
UC Berkeley School of Law at Boalt Hall
Not As Good As Stanford School of Law or "NAGAS", for short
The Not Stanford School of Law
Berserkeley School of Law
Josh's album is hilarious. song about a hot girl: "I'm a noscitur asociis kind of guy, that's why I want her by my side."
brilliant
Cal has won the past five Big Games (2002-2006), so I propose “The Kicks-Stanford’s-Ass School of Law”
The Clinging to Past Prestige School of Law
UC Hastings School of Law.
Hmmm... that one also sounds oddly familiar.
California Law
Berkley School of Law
University of California Law School
Field Law School (1st S. Ct. Justice from CA)
Warren School of Law (14th CJ of S. Ct.)
I don't get it -- no law schools go by a brand name -- that's a business school thing. Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, NYU, etc. vs. Wharton, Stern, Fuqua, Haas, Tuck. Sure, there are exceptions, but why mess with tradition? Stick with Berkeley School of Law. There's no way a different name is ever going to sound anything but less prestigious.
Berkeley Law School? Is there a decent "BLS" out there (TTT NNA)?
NYU West
Accidental e-mail congratulates 7,000 on admission to UC Berkeley law school
Edward Tom, director of admissions at the University of California, Berkeley, law school, was training a new office worker when it happened.
Tom was demonstrating the e-mail software used by the school and was highlighting several features, including how the user can filter mail and set it to send messages to one recipient or many at the same time.
That’s when he chose what happened to be a standard congratulatory message on being admitted to the university’s prestigious law school and accidentally sent it to all 7,000 students who have applied for admission to the law school.
The problem, which the school quickly admitted, is that all of the applicants won’t be admitted. In fact, there’s only room for 800 to 850 of them. The e-mail congratulated the applicants on their recent “admission” to the school and invited them to an annual reception co-hosted by alumni and several student organizations.
So that's what Boalt Hall School of Law is, I guess I should have investigated that before throwing out it's recruiting materials with the rest of the Tier 2-4 crap. I didn't realize where/what it was.
I don't understand why they want to refer to the school by its own name, rather than the name of the larger institution. Other schools don't have that level of arrogance. Nobody would know where you went if you said you had a law degree from King Hall or J. Reuben Clark school of law, but everyone knows UC Davis and BYU.
What's wrong with Boalt? I've worked in East Coast law firms most of my life and I know who they are.
5:43, that's Michigan.
They should just stick with University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
The University of California School of Law.
There's only one University of California and it's located in Berkeley.
Chicago-Kent and Cardozo are pretty successful with their "brand."
McGeorge, Gould, Boyd, Brandeis, Columbus, Beasley, O'Connor, Washington (American), Dicksinson, Rogers, Marshall-Wythe, Clark, less so.
I think it'd be a great game to match law school names with university names!
I think they should call it Dicksinson -- I like that! Dicks-inson. Dicks-in-son. Dicks-ins-on.
University of California at Berkeley School of Liberal Legal Letters
(abbreviated LLLB for Liberal Legal Letters-Berkeley)
I think they should name it Law is More Fun When You're High.
How about the “Joanie Caucus School of Law”, for the first cartoon character (from "Doones-bury,") to attend and graduate from LS (Boalt Hall)?
Or, how about the “Sho Sato School of Law”, for first Asian-American law professor at a major American law school? (Sato joined the Boalt Hall faculty in 1955.)
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints//FedEx School of Law, Magic Glasses and Package Studies. You heard it here first.
Boalt Hall at UC Berkeley
The Lance Ito Academy of Television and Jurisprudence?
Well the undergrad is known as "Cal" so perhaps "Cal Law" is best... of course this becomes awkward to say, sounding more like "Callaw" - whatever that means.
Otherwise... "Berkeley Law"
As a Boalt alum I'll be sad if the name goes (it does have wide recognition in the legal community, why mess with it?)
Berkeley Law School seems to be the only reasonable alternative...
Sandy Cohen's Gorgeous Eyebrows School of Law
Handsome Boy Lawyering School
The Jesse H. Choper School of Law
Dan Farber and Philip Frickey School of Law and Jurisprudence
Judge Roy Bean College of Law
Here is the winning name:
The People's Republic of California Law Center
I love Boalties. Josh is awesome. Now that the school's hottest groups, Divalicious and Last Clear Chance, have graduated, I'm glad Josh is there to continue and improve upon the tradition of excellence.
I assume they're going for international recognition, so it's not super-relevant that American lawyers know what Boalt means.
By the same token, Cal is an international university, so they will want to attach to that.
So I would think UC Berkeley Law School {colloquially, BLS} or UC Law School at Berkeley {Cal Law} is the winner.
David Lat School of Law or "Lat Law" for short.
That is all.
OK, if there is a name change, will Boalt recall and reprint all of those prior diplomas?
Or will they handle it with a “formerly know as Boalt Hall School of Law” appended to the new name?
Any thoughts on how this might work?
Prior name changed law schools:
• SMU to The Dedman School of Law in 2001
• The Detroit City Law School to Wayne State University Law School in 1938
• The law school at Michigan State University is now named the MSU College of Law as of 2004
• And of course the infamous renaming forced by The Ralph R. Papitto Law School’s namesake’s use of the N-word while discussing “the difficulty of finding people of color to serve on the university's 16-member board”.
None of these examples are much help here......
Easy, name it after the most prominent almunus,
Earl Warren School of Law
The diploma states "The Regents of the University of California . . . have conferred upon X the degree of juris doctor . . . given at Berkeley this [date]"
No changes necessary, since Boalt Hall does not appear on the diploma.
I think Warren School of Law is good (Davis is King Hall).
My prediction, however, is that because the school has retained an outside firm to come up with a name it will be short and sporty (read: lame) - most likely "Cal Law"
Please write to Edley and suggest Earl Warren Hall or Warren Hall.

whatever you do, don't put "Hall" in the name -- it's stupid
Why run when you can Boalt School of Law?
6:54: Talk about planning ahead.
Said before, but University of California Law School. Berkeley rightfully calls itself "University of California" because it is the first UC, so why not do the same for its law school?
Downside, though, is that everyone will probably think the "U.C.L.S." shirts are just typos.

The Melvin Belli School of Law (Boalt ’29)
The Larry W. Sonsini School of Law (Boalt ’66).
**Contingent of course on a zillion dollar donation from Mr. S.
University of California Boalt School of Law
7:14 - Hastings was the first of the UC law schools, so by your logic the name "University of California Law School" rightfully belongs to Hastings.
Chuck Norris School of Kick Your Ass
7:15: The word is "espresso." There is no "x" in "espresso," nor is the word "espresso" derived in any way from the word "express."
William L. Prosser Law School at Berkeley
Expecially at Boalt.
The Danny Tanner School of Law at Berkeley
The Bill & Melinda Gates, Sorry We Spent All Our Foundation Money In Africa, School of Law But Thanks For The Honor, Law School
To expand on 7:24's comment, the original plan was to have all of the professional UC schools in San Francisco, so Hastings (law) and UCSF (med) were put there, while lowly undergrads had to be in rural Berkeley.
Danny Noonan School of Law at Berkeley
LEAVE BOALT HALL ALONE!!!
7:26- You weren't involved in article selection on law review, were you?
Expresso is a digital article submission system created by some Berkeley people. We always found it ironic that Expresso charged for use, while the rival digital article submission system from Stanford was free.
"Second Best Law School in Northern California."
Berserkeley Law
7:53, shouldn't you go back to celebrating the four votes your school got in the Coaches' Poll?
I got a suggestion.
BOALT HALL.

Stanford: "Second Best [College Football Team] in Northern California".

UC Berkeley Boalt School of Law
The Kim Jung Il School of Law.
I graduated top of the class from this school 6 years in a row. That was while I mastered the internet and shot 72 holes in one while playing on the golf team.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
How about Melvin Shnozwald School of Law
Who the fuck doesn't know what Boalt Hall is? They probably don't matter in the legal realm.

Tada....
PS: Tada is not part of the proposed name.

It could pretend it's very Silicon Valley, and give itself a very web 2.0 name.
Suggestions from the random web 2.0 name generator:
Skyboo
Quiyo
Dablist
Snaplaw
Or it could just go web 1.0 and start referring to itself by its domain name: law.berkeley.edu School of Law.
The illusive quadruple post! Sorry about that guys, not trying to be annoying. My browser kept getting stuck, and I wasn't sure if it was going through.
Dear 9:24: Its always going through.
7:38, Bill Gates already has the University of Washington School of Law named after him. Well, actually it's his dad, but they share the same name, and we all know who bank rolled the effort.
Boalt at Berkeley
UC Berkeley School of Jurisprudence at Boalt Hall
University of California Law School at Berkeley's Boalt Hall
How about "Our Football Team is not as Good as USC School of Law?"
Lightning Boalt School of Law

Peter Thottam School of Law.
Anyone remember him? He was the '99 Boalt grad who cried publicly when WSGR canned him in 2001

(although they have some very cute undergrad co-eds though--but they all marry Stanford MBAs or Boalt alums.)
How about the Suck My Balls School of Losers.
The Setting Yourself on Fire to Protest the Latest Perceived Indignity School of "Law"
It would be most prestigious to just name it after the state with no city qualification - leave that to the lesser schools.
UC Law
University of California, Berkeley School of Legal Science
Did something tragic happen to Lat? He didn't leave us with a "non-sequiturs" today.
Problem is that "California Law School" sounds like some unaccredited law school. And the University of California Law School is fine, but nowadays the prestigious part is *Berkeley.* The undergrad calls itself UC Berkeley; the law school should call itself UC Berkeley Law School, Boalt Hall or UC Berkeley School of Law, Boalt Hall. Avoiding the "Berkeley" will confuse non-Californians; throwing out the Boalt Hall will confuse everyone who currently knows the school (University of California Law School? Where is that? Berkeley? Is that the same as Boalt Hall?) and anger the alums.

10:19, how about the Tedford School of Law as an homage to the man who's proving you wrong?
Anthony Michael Hall?
My vote is for "The People's Republic of California Law Center," but really, who cares whats on a t-shirt? I'll never personally call my school anything but Boalt, because anyone who I'm going to be working for is going to immediately understand me. Go for it Dean, change whatever you want, I know where I am.
Boalt Hall & Oates School of Law
Four Legs Good, Two legs Bad School of Law.
Another vote here for:
PETER THOTTAM School of Law.
That guy is a legend for being an idiot, it's perfect!
The Treehugger School of Law
Anyone who counts knows "Boalt Hall." Speaking as a former alum of "Boalt Hall," I strongly object to the name, "Marsha Berzon School of Law" -- not everyone that went to Boalt was a liberal. And, if you really want a liberal judge who was an alum, why wouldn't you go with something like, the "Earl Warren School of Law." He was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after all.
Bold Law School
Enough with Boalt already. We need to move to rename Georgetown's law school ... um ... center. Georgetown University Law Center sounds like a clinic for homeless folk (not that there's anything wrong with such a facility -- just wouldn't want to go to school there). "GULC" doesn't exactly work either. Why can't it just be Georgetown Law School. Or maybe "G-Law." You know, something pithy ... like Boalt.
The question really isn't whether the school should rename itself, obviously its official name (Univ. of Cal. Berkeley School of Law) should remain the same.
The question is what name they would like to be referred to in short, Berkeley or Boalt. I propose Berkeley, simply because it is more recognizable.
OJ's Skool of KrimLaw
How about The University of Oregon School of Law - Southern Campus?
The "That's What She Said School of Law at Berkeley"
I CAN HAS LAWS AT BERKY?
The "Sorry About Your LSAT" School of Law.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea School of Law.
I agree with some of the above posters, the best name would be "The People's Republic of California Law Center" (or school.
