NYU Law School: Left in the Dark
As you've probably noticed, we've been experiencing some technical difficulties around here. And it seems we're not alone.
From an ATL reader at NYU Law School:
More fun at NYU, and this one actually affects me. We had manhole fire near one of the two NYU law dorms (the one I live in), and this has cut the power to the building. Making this even more annoying is that I planned to outline a lot today (yes its nerdy, but one week until exams), and needed an active power source, and am now huddled in the overcrowded law library. Here's an official story about it: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=local&id=5803017. We haven't received any news from the Administration.
I realize it's probably a small thing, but if a list-serve clusterf*ck can get on, why not a little power outage.
But since we received that email, the law school administration has spoken. More after the jump.
From a second source:
Here's the email about the evacuation. Note it was sent half an hour before the scheduled 4 p.m. evacuation, when they have known [about it] for at least 2 hours. From: Alison Moppett

Subject: RE: 240 Mercer Street Evacuation Plan
TO: Residents of Mercer StreetFROM: Department of Residence Services
DATE: November 30, 2007
Due to extensive damage caused at the corner of West 3rd and Mercer by an early morning manhole fire, Con Edison indicates that they are unable to restore normal service to 240 Mercer Street for an undefined period of time. Therefore, a generator has been brought to the site to supply power to the building until normal service is restored.
To ensure the safety of all residents and as a directive from the Department of Public Safety, 240 Mercer Street is to be evacuated as of 4 PM this afternoon until the generator is operational. We hope to allow access back to 240 Mercer by 9 PM tonight.
Please note the following areas, in addition to the standard available spaces in Vanderbilt Hall and Furman Hall, are available for your use:
* Lipton Hall
* Greenberg Lounge (as of 6 PM)
* Tischman Auditorium (as of 6 PM)
* All available classrooms (FH 214, VH 204, VH 206, VH 210)Light refreshments will be available in Lipton Hall in the early evening.
For updates to the restoration of power at 240 Mercer Street, please call 81220.
If Con Edison is unable to get the generator operational, Lipton Hall and Coles Sports Center will have cots and linens available for overnight stays.
Thank you for your understanding and flexibility during this period.
Okay, so it's not as exciting as the Hillary Headquarters Hostage Crisis. But on a slow news day, we'll take what we can get.
Manhole fires knock out power in Greenwich Village [ABC 7 / Eyewitness News]

NYU sucks in so many ways.
He said manhole. Heh.
FIRST!!!!
and I'm first, finally.
I had manhole fire once. I'm never going back to that bathhouse.
At a good school (Hofstra), there is no such thing as a blackout ;)
MOST WORTHLESS ATL POST EVER
NYU rocks, don't be bitter bc you didn't get in Columbia tool @ 3:54.
NYU rocks, don't be bitter bc you didn't get in, Columbia tool @ 3:54.
That Hillary Hostage thing is WILD.
Lat, you're seriously posting this?
At AMERICAN JUSTICE! School of Law they send us into the hills with tents when the power goes out.
NYU law school is WAY OVERRATED. All the STUPIDEST ppl in my firm are from there...
Approximately 500 aspring lawyers will be living like refugees tonight. I certainly hope a lawsuit develops.
NYU students to space heaters!!!
Slow news then get around to posting about stuff other than New York. Tennessee Judiciary Chairman of the House getting arrested for DUI:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKOE9sK7m7o
You never talked about that or his affair with the hottie Trial Lawyers lobbyist.
Well said 4:03:
". . . don't be bitter bc you didn't get in Columbia . . ."
Oh, nevermind, you were trying to suggest the poster was bitter because they didn't get into NYU. Great word use! You must be from NYU?
4:31 and most of you other posters,
I'm glad I turned down my offer to HLS to go to my regional school (on a full ride), as it means I don't have to deal with idiots like you. I'll take my $100K a year for working 50-60 hours a week with a COL half or less than that in big cities.
Good times.
NYU peoples are stupider than Rutgers peoples. All worthless pieces of crap.
why does a power outage require evacuation? oh noes, I can't sleep b/c the power is out.
This isn't blog-worthy.
If there's no news, just don't post anything. But there is news - hostage situation at a Hillary office! Come on Lat!
Light refreshments, delightful!
I used to follow ATL a lot more often until more and more really uninteresting and barely relevant posts like this started showing up more and more. I understand that it's friday and probably a slow day, but why post anything at all if this is all that is going on? Oh well.
may be new for NYU, but sounds like just a regular friday at berkeley: http://boaltalk.blogspot.com/2007/11/boalt-hall-fires-2007-part-ii.html
Can we have a poll on whether the Hillary Clinton campaign office hostage situation is a hoax set up the campaign to demonstrate Hillary's ability to lead in times of crisis?
can the noobs please stop posting "first"? it's so 2004.
two girls, one cup....in the dark!
4:40: If you seriously turned down Harvard (and I assume you didn't mean Hofstra, thought that would make more sense) then I feel sorry for you. Unless by "regional school" you mean UVA or Michigan, your decision will likely haunt you for many years to come. Of course, it is possible that you simply lack ambition and are content at working on small deals with your role remaining as paper pusher for years to come. If so, great. If not, you will never get (in the long-run) the same experience at a small regional shop as in a sophisticated major-market firm. Again, if you are happy with the "typical" office job, good for your. Such contentment is a rarity. But most people with the intellectual firepower to get into any top school would find such a life to be mind-numbing. Furthermore, you won't ever have the opportunity to make a move into academia . . . or a whole host of other fields that Harvard would have opened up for you. I hope you've worked hard as a 1L, because you might yet salvage your career by transferring up as a 2L. Good luck!
I used to live in Mercer and that manhole cover would blow up 2-3 times each winter. It was crazy. The first time it happened, the explosion cracked my window.
Con Ed sucks. They've known about this for at least 5 years and haven't fixed it.
@4:40 - if you turned down HLS (and I'm assuming you mean Harvard, not Hofstra) for a "regional" school, then you are too dumb to have even gotten into Harvard. Period. And no, I didn't go to Harvard.
Cots and "linens"? Yeah, right. You'll have Army surplus blankets.
Who outlines on Fridays? If you go to NYU you should be smart enough to go to a bar when you didn't have anywhere to live. Learn to be a law student and drink more.
Power is back on.
Yes power is back on. We have no choice, but to go back to our seriously sucky school.
I should have gone to Columbia.
No wait ... I didn't get into Columbia.
I should have gone to Rutgers.
D'oh!
D'Agostino rules...
Wait, did someone just call NYU a "regional school"!?! Listen, the only reason we're not ranked above HLS is because Harvard's skating on its history. We already have all their professors (save Feldmann). I've got my nunchucks [sic] out & sharpened, and my hordes of brethren ready to go, if that insult was correctly interpreted.
You may say, "how can you sharpen nunchucks, NYU Ninja? Aren't they without blades?" My answer is, maybe yours are. Maybe yours are.
how do you tell the difference between a CLS grad and a Hofstra grad?
you can't.
not a joke - just a public service annoucement.
When I was a 1L at NYU Law, there were repeated manhole cover explosions att he same intersection. Everytime they blew, it sounded like a bomb.

No, I mean Harvard. I had a 3.96 UGPA and 174 LSAT, and I'm doing just fine in my state school (not UVA/UMich). People might not be the smartest here, but at least I don't have to put up with idiots like you. And you can laugh all you want, but in 10 years I'll be making more money than most Cravath or Skadden partners doing plaintiffs' work. And I'll even have time to drive that Lamborghini I worked so hard to get and spend time with my beautiful wife and kids.
So enjoy your prestigious school/firm. It will be the only thing you have when you kick the bucket at age 45 from a heart attack. In case you didn't know, 90 hours a week can cause serious health problems. :)
And have fun pointing out all of my grammatical errors as you slave away at work on a perfectly fine Saturday afternoon!
Interesting that that a 1L already knows what's gonna happen in 10 years. I'm a 2L and I got no idea what's happening after this summer...
Content 1L, good for you. I realize that most ATL posts are snarky, but this is serious: good for you. I'm at NYU, and I intend to pursue a similar path at some point. I'm glad that you have things in perspective, and I hope I manage to do the same.
"manhole fire" = check the expiration date on the tube of preparation H
NYU is a great school and #1 in the world in terms of access to good marijuana and hookers. At least when I was there. NYU 98'.
4:31, clearly you do not / did not go to a school as good as nyu, since you do not seem to understand basic punctuation.
"Don't be bitter you didn't get in, Columbia tool" does not = "Don't be bitter you didn't get in Columbia."
Just a public service announcement from your friendly nyu genius.
As an HLS grad, I will admit that once NYU brings up their reputation score (which will happen as older lawyers/judges retire) they will likely move up even higher in the rankings. Look at the numbers.
