Since You're Probably Pulling All-Nighters Anyway...

sleep-deprived.jpg

Are you a law student in the D.C. area looking for a part-time job to help you pay for books and the "cheapest sh*t the liquor stores sell?"

Well, Skadden has a great opportunity for you. That is, so long as you don't want to sleep. Our tipster passed along this listing from the GW Jobs Board:

Major international law firm is seeking a law student to join its overnight Legal Assistant staff. The ability to perform legal research, cite check, Blue Book, shepardize, proofread and use Lexis/Westlaw is required, in addition to providing general support to attorneys in various practice areas, as assigned. Individual must be flexible and able to work independently, follow instructions well, and have an eye for detail. A skills test will be administered. Competitive salary and excellent benefits package commensurate with experience. EOE.

The scheduled hours are: Monday night through Friday morning
Midnight - 5:00 a.m.
(20 hours per week)

We especially recommend this position for a 1L, because you might as well go balls-to-the-wall on sleep deprivation. It's all about the experience, man. That's what you'll tell the grandkids about one day.

And if you do this as a 1L, you might realize how much the practice of law sucks and quit before you spend two more years of your life wasting away in law school.

Skadden DC's had these types of positions available for years. I actually briefly considered applying for one when I was an evening student at a DC law school, but thankfully found work elsewhere. It does sound like an incredibly tough gig (but if you're the type who doesn't go to class anyway, it probably wouldn't matter and I bet the flow is decent).

Doesn't seem like that bad an option for the enterprising American University or GW Law evening student: 5 hours/day, get up at 5pm, go to school, go to work, get home and in bed by 10am with time for dinner and reading. Probably pays well enough, and gets your resume in the door at a firm you wouldn't otherwise sniff come recruiting season.

I know someone who had this exact job. He was a night owl anyway and didn't have the grades to get a summer spot there, so he worked there at night to try to get a partner's attention, slept all day, and then took night classes and studied before he went to work at midnight. It actually worked out pretty well for him since he didn't have to do anything at work unless someone needed something.

I'm digging the YouTube video. Nice song dude. I don't agree with you, but nice song.

Even without the six-figure salary, I would say law school was a great time in my life and well worth the six-figure debt. Sure there were a few bumps in the road, e.g., spending loan money on a new king-size mattress and then inviting a slightly overweight jewish girl on her period over for a nightcap the same day it was delivered, or studying for exams. But the great times overshadow the bad. Live it up you law students. Live it up.

Your best story at law school involves a fat girl on the rag? I can't believe you would complain about your bed. If you are pulling that type of tail you should display your bed as a trophy for that "one time I got some." Seriously tell Al Bundy stories as your own now on, at least it would be entertaining.

4:17, a few comments:

(1) The autoadmit boards are at www.autoadmit.com; during your spat of being an uncontrollable douchebag with nothing to show for your miserable life other than your law degree, you must have mistakenly stumbled upon the wrong message board.

(2) do I sense some insecurity over the fact that your territory is being encroached by a few other respectable schools? I know Skadden will take anyone with a left gonad from NYU, and I'm sorry you failed to make the cut, but there's no need to be such an arrogant prick. Especially since these students actually did *real work* to get to where they are. Some schools actually have a bit of competition in summer hiring.

(3) before you finally cut your umbilical cord from mommy and get that first sniff of independence in the real working world, let me give you some indispensable advice: You will meet many people--people who are far more successful than you will ever be--who did not go to your school. When you come to terms with this, perhaps you will be worthy enough to play with the big boys. Until then, quit juggling your own turds -- your pedigree doesn't entitle you to a biglaw position.

haha GW and AU don't really have much trouble getting in the door there. For a "lawyer" (I smell a law student, but anyway...), you certainly throw unsubstantiated facts around pretty heavily. Let's just say I'm a GW alum who's been sniffing around some good firms.

S&C OUT!

Uhh, guys--not to defend the rampant douchebaggery at some points on this board, but 4:17 did specify night students at GW and American. They may be decent schools for placing full-time students in biglaw, but things are a bit different when in comes to night students at Skadden. Pretty sure the poster was right in this case that they wouldn't sniff it otherwise.

I'm sorry, did something spill in people's collective coffee? There are NYU students who couldn't sniff Skadden. There are GW students who could probably work at Wachtell. There are also GW, AU, or other students, particularly at night school, who couldn't work at Skadden without a foot in the door. I don't recall saying anything to contradict this - as 4:23 indicates, people have taken this job for exactly that reason.

Sheesh, people. Defensive much?

Jeez, some posters here have a complex. NYU5L never said that *no* AU/GW students get into Skadden. Just that some of their night students might need this leg up.

Are "ha!" "Skadden SA" and "NYU Skadden Reject" really saying that all night students at GW and AU have a decent shot at Skadden, regardless of rank?

And 04:20 - I don't think your plan will work. What law firm lets their associates free for five whole hours overnight?

Obviously a graveyard shift job sucks for anyone, but I'm always amused by the "1L year is already such a nearly-impossible, sleep-depriving experience" comments. What the hell are you people talking about? I went to HLS. People study hard there. But it's a joke to pretend it takes even half the time you'd spend at even a non-firm job. I'd be surprised if I had a single week other than a pre-finals week where I spent 40 hours on class + reading. I slept 8 hours a night and napped often. Being a student is the best and easiest lifestyle you'll ever have -- enjoy it while it lasts.

7:21: You didn't have to be at the top of your class to get a BIGLAW job. People at schools ranked lower (even a little bit lower) than HLS do. I would've been pretty relaxed at HLS, too.

I am a GW night student who got an offer from Skadden and I turned them down. Many students from my school (in both full-time and part-time programs) who got offers from them turned them down for other firms ranked higher in DC.

The part-time program does place very well with firms (esp cos people actually have work experience and a proven track record in the work place instead of coming straight out of college).

Skadden is a good firm and somewhat exclusive, but I think being in the top 35% of students at GW means you have a shot.

I interviewed at Skadden several decades ago. I called the next day to withdraw my application. The recruitment coordinator couldn't believe that I was serious about withdrawing. After interviewing, I didn't think my life was going to be long enough to spend any of it there.
