What about us midtown corporate types? Can we show our solidarity by, umm, eating some halal chicken from the grease truck? That I wouldn't mind...

Umm. yes, all you greedy big corporate lawyers should go assuage your liberal guilt and relive your parents' hippie lifestyle by going to protest. Perhaps the NYPD will crack you upside the skull and arrest you so I can vie for your position.

Pakastani lawyers and judges to non-martial law!

Do people who use the term "liberal guilt" call out others to assuage their corporate guilt (and act like they're just keepin it real)? Otherwise why not just dismiss and move on?
I won't be there, but I do love a good protest every now and then!

This makes a lot of sense, since I have always said: "As goes 60 Centre Street, so goes Islamabad"

Seriously, you could argue that large scale international protests could have an impact, but this little crap?

Who the hell thinks marching LAWYERS will arouse sympathy from anyone - let alone sympathy FOR other lawyers?

People hate lawyers.

I think in a popularity contest involving military dictators vs. terrorists vs. lawyers vs. ebola, the dictators probably win, and lawyers are last.

(There's a double whammy for terrorist-lawyers like Lynne Stewart and David Cole!)

11:31,

Glibbest comment of the week. First, I am not a liberal. Second, my parents aren't hippies - they are Russians. There are no hippies in Russia. Third, the protest has nothing to do with whether you are liberal or conservative - it has to do with lawyers being jailed for being lawyers by totalitarian regime.

I realize you are angry being, like myself, a marginalized conservative in a biglaw shop where most people are card-carrying Hillary voters, but you are barking up a very wrong tree here.

"Who the hell thinks marching LAWYERS will arouse sympathy from anyone - let alone sympathy FOR other lawyers?"

Um, you're missing the point. I think you read too much Overlawyered.com. The attorneys in Pakistan are being incredibly brave. The march is to show encouraging solidarity with them, from one member of the profession to another.

Ah, I reached a _est of the week title.

Actually, 12:22, I am a Federalist with a fierce libertarian streak, and what I was trying to convey is my very real apathy for the Pakistani lawyers. Yes, apathy, not empathy or sympathy. Simply put, I care, but only an iota and certainly not enough to give up an hour of billable time. Sad, isn't it?

If only American Lawyers actually believed in exercising their freedoms to show support for others. I'm ashamed at how apathetic so many of you are. If you actually took part in helping democracy here and abroad, people might start to respect lawyers. I think the American public has more respect for Pakistani lawyers right now than American ones!

I for one will be at the DC protest tomorrow.
