Judge of the Day: Grafton Biddle
Colorado judge Grafton M. Biddle has been the subject of a prior ATL shout-out. But he has never been officially named a Judge of the Day. We think it’s about time.
From the Rocky Mountain News:
A former Douglas County judge who had an affair with a prosecutor that included a rendezvous in his chambers and in the women’s courthouse showers was suspended for three years Monday.Grafton M. Biddle’s punishment comes almost a year after he resigned his judgeship in a short Dec. 18 letter signed simply, “With regrets,” that gave no reason for his decision.
But by then, rumors of his affair with Deputy District Attorney Laurie A. Hurst — who used the last name Steinman at the time — had been circulating in the courthouse.
From one of the paper’s online commenters:
“Just another black mark on the Colorado Judicial System…… Would this be prostitution??? You know, lawyers have billable hours for everything they do… Screw the judge or screw the neighbors… Someone is paying the price for getting screwed, and an attorney is involved.”
If you use the Douglas County courthouse showers, wear flip-flops.

I love this story. Can we please get a photo of Laurie? thx.
chicks love the muzzy on their fuzzy.
Lat, how could you not post the picture on this page???

Thanks 5:05.
On another point, what's up with the name change? Did she get divorced after her tryst with the Judge?
I didn't know courtrooms had showers. What are they needed for?
Why the hell are there courthouse showers?
I just read some of the comments to the last story about this. Talk about a comments clusterf*ck. Did the Judge's wife actually post a comment there? That is some crazy shit.
she earned a BS *after* she finished law school?
* University of Denver, (B.S., Magna Cum Laude, 2000)
* Sturm College of Law, University of Denver, (J.D., 1990)
it's hard to believe that there's a prior degree from shitty school that could possibly be *more* embarrassing to her than a BS/JD from (YIKES!) Denver.
ps - what's a "Sturm"?
Looking at the old post and Laura's web page, you can see that her profile still has her getting a B.S. in 2000 and a J.D. in 1990.
Maybe I can travel back in time to do my post before 5:19?
Grafton Biddle is a sweet name, and the bow tie only makes it sweeter.
I'd rather shtup her colleague (http://www.thewarehamgroup.com/dstuart.htm) who at least went to schools I've heard of.
5:19:
While Deputy District Attorney Laurie A. Hurst is clearly an embarassment to the Sturm College of Law, your comments about the "shitty school" she attended are unfounded.
While you likely work in some Biglaw sweatshop, bill 2500 hours a year, are miserable, have no life, and are slightly overweight, those of us who are proud to belong to the Colorado legal community have something else in common: over 50% of us graduated from this "shitty school." This list includes attorneys at practically every firm in Denver, federal and state judges, and high ranking members of both federal and state govenment agencies.
I happen to practice in Denver and am a former federal judicial clerk. Many of my classmates from the Sturm College of Law practice in Biglaw firms. We also do things with our spare time like hike, bike, ski, and snowboard (yes, we have spare time).
Finally, to answer your question: "what is a 'Sturm.'" A Sturm is in fact Donald Sturm, the founder of American National Bank and member of the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans.
Yes 5:19, Mr. Sturm attended this "shitty school" and achieved success greater than you ever will--imagine that.
5.54, you're an embarrassment to this website.
Kindly retreat to your TTT.
How about those of you who are ashamed to belong to the Colorado legal community? What do they have in common, besides a clearer understanding of reality that the few, the proud, the Strumers? Do they have a local Special Olympics in the Colorado legal community where all the Strumers are winners, too?
5:57:
No retreat is necessary, as I've already won. Futhermore, check your facts, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law is not TT according to USNWR, nor has it ever been. Although--as you likely cannot count--I'm not surprised that you're mistaken.
5:54/6:03 - You've already won? Is this a fucking video game now? Jesus, they teach you Stumers well. First they teach you to brag about someone else's credentials, then they teach you that there is BigLaw in Colorado, and now they teach you that you "win." Special Olympics, what'd I tell you!
I love that her bio informs us that Laurie volunteers and enjoys snorkeling, jet skiing but does not divulge that she enjoys getting plowed by guys who look like the illegitimate child of Jed Clampett and Mr. Drysdale. This is information that clients need to have.
Wait a second, Dean Kagan told us we already won by being admitted to HLS. Who's lying here??
6:07:
You are pathetic and unable to form a coherent argument. However, as you likely do doc review in a closet all day, I guess logical thought isn't a prerequisite for your position.
Sturm is ranked 77.
6:09 delivers
Sturm is a lawyer factory which churns out more lawyers than the Colorado market can handle, and which has no name recognition outside of Colorado. I'm waiting for the day when Loyola 2L graduates, and a Sturm 2L takes his/her place.
Why do Colorado people always insist on reminding everyone that, in Colorado, you can hike, bike, ski, snowboard, and generally immerse yourself in the outdoors?
Guess what, 'rado? Nobody outside of you and the other Big Square States gives a shit about the outdoors.
Long live bottle service, video games, and the indoors.
Also, despite what you think, your dank is actually pretty mediocre.
"I'm suggesting free mustache rides."
Give dap to Billy Merck, who caught this in April.

6:25 is correct. The Denver legal market cannot support all of the DU graduates, and that is before we consider Colorado grads and graduates from the top schools who want to go back to Denver.
5:54
Slightly overweight?
Clearly you've never met a bona fide NYC BigLaw Associate in the flesh.
We are gods among men--though many of us are queer.
I pity the fool who compromises his good standing on the bench for some prosecutorial hussie!
8:54:
Right adverb, wrong noun.
The real legal story in Colorado right now is the former judge and his attorney wife in Boulder who connived to adversely possess one third of their neighbors' lot to prevent them from building a home there that would obstruct their view of the mountains. Suddenly, the whole state thinks it knows what adverse possession is.
I don't know what's up with her bio... she graduated high school in the mid late 90's, and law school in 2005. Colorado is a small place... I looked her up in my high school year book... she was chunky then... must have been hard in a school full of models.
All you DU haters can also lick my balls as I make absolute top tier money, yet don't have to live on one of the shitty seaboards (San Fran excluded... which is good because of all the free trips there on the firm).
Guys in my high school went to law schools not ranked even in the top 50 and bragged about snow boarding in colorado all the time, it was no big deal
From her bio-
"Laurie enjoys giving back to the community..."
Indeed.
"Laurie also enjoys water sports"
6:15 - 77th ... in the Mountain Time Zone?
