Associate Bonus Watch: Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft
Back in November, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft issued a bonus memo that was devoid of numbers. Today, the CWT associates who survived the recent layoffs -- which, to be fair, is most of them -- learned how much they'd be getting.
But since there was no firm-wide memo, there's still a lack of total transparency about how much people are getting. Associated were notified individually:
"CWT announced its bonuses today in individual letters to the remaining associates. Some people got full market bonuses and others got letters that merely told them what 2008 salaries are, with no mention of a bonus."
If you can shed more light on the situation, feel free to post in the comments, or email us. Thanks.

Dear 4:18 -
You just have to get out there and do something, ya know...? You can't just stand on the sidelines forever. I mean, I'm just so sick of so many people just standing around saying, "what can I do?"
We know what to do, and we have to show everyone else the way. That is the gift we have been given, and now we have to get out there and help people get off the sidelines.
I see so many people and I say, I have to continue to help them. I can't stop now. There is so much more to do. I'm tired of all the talk. Now is the time to act. And I've got so much momentum that I can't stop! I'm going to keep going forward and I know I can push through.
I'm just so excited that I have been able to help so many, and have the ability to help so many more. With the knowledge that I have been given, it's just amazing. I just want to keep helping people.

as reluctant as i am to admit it, now's probably a good time to join cadwalader. they corrected for a downturn in the economy in one fell swoop, and now will continue to grow on an adjusted trajectory while other firms peel one associate at a time from their legs as they try to match step with the lighter cwt through this recession.

Remember all those CWT associates who were defending the place last summer?
Not only is it the least selective firm in biglaw (they take people with Cs from duke), now they're stiffing associates on their bonus.
Long live Bob Link's economic miracle.

As reluctant as I am to admit it, joining Cadwalader now would probably be a good idea. Throughout this recession, other firms will peel one associate at a time off their legs to match step with the lighter firm that was able to make preparations for the economic downturn in one fell swoop.

hey 5:17 - yeah CWT handled this in one fell swoop, like naming only 2 people to partnership this year, when usually its around 10, laying off 35 associates, and then stiffing associates on their bonus, - I wonder how many more times CWT's one fell swoop is going to strike.

Heath Ledger jokes are sick, inappropriate, unprofessional and wrong.
Is it true they found: (a) a gerbil in his rectum, (b) a gallon of semen in his stomach, (c) Mary Kates DNA on his anus, and/or (d) a leather belt around his neck?!?!

Richard Gere (and Bob Link) survived (a), (b) and (d) above. Unlikely those were the causes of death.

LAT needs to dig into the demographics of the "layoffs"... I hear McKee dumped a bunch of women (and moms!) and minorities took a hit at CWT?!?!
DIG you lazy queen, DIG!
Posted by: LAT SHOULD DIG | January 24, 2008 06:54 PM
minorities did take a hit at cwt, as did everybody else. I would not be surprised if less than half the associates got full bonuses (when last year more than 90% got full). It's nuts over here.
Posted by: anon | January 24, 2008 06:57 PM
What about CWT Charlotte???
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 07:03 PM
CWT is crap. Good luck recruiting anything above fourth tier this recruiting season. They already had a reputation of "stay away at all costs" during OCI, but I don't know who would waste their time interviewing with them now. Smart move with the layoffs!
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 07:07 PM
CWT is such a joke. Always has been. The only law students who "choose" to go there are ones with no other options. At least last year it made money, now its just a cess pool.

Mofo gave the "special" bonus plus market bonus to all NYC associates. Good for them. Now we are waiting to see what they do for associates in other offices. Especially in Denver. If there is any place where associates deserve a big bonus, its got to be Denver. People are saying they are going to bring back bonuses for hitting hours (1950). Anyone heard anything else?
Posted by: mofobia | January 25, 2008 12:58 AM
CWT Charlotte paid same bonus as New York. Some associates received full match (market plus special), some only market, and some got zip.
For any bonus, hours cut off was about 2000. No clue as to what level was needed for "special".

I joined Cadwalader's ranks a couple of years ago after having turned down offers from a few other firms that sit above it on the Vault rankings. I based my decision on the genuineness of my interviewers. I'm sorry to disappoint the five of you out there who post repeatedly in a transparent attempt to sully the firm's name, but I have never regretted my decision.
Feel free to cry "CWT marketing department." But while we are quite frivolous in our attempts to attract new talent, Sunday-night blogging is not among the recruiting department's duties.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 27, 2008 09:33 PM
Nice story. But all of the "transparent attempts to sully the firms name" are based on first hand stories of CWT's low hiring standards and nasty treatment of its people (a nice combination of weak an mean) - btw if you base your career decisions on the "genuineness of your interviewers" you prove the point that CWT is full of morons.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 02:41 AM
General characterizations of any Biglaw firm are meaningless, because of sheer size, even when coming from those who have first hand experience working at whatever firm. It's like saying that an entire i-bank or consulting firm sucks (not a white horse analogy, I know, but still). I work at CWT (midlevel, full + special bonus), and I happen to really like my department and am generally quite happy here (aside from the ubiquitous stuff that most Biglaw associates experience).
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 09:21 AM
I used to work at CWT. Terrible treatment of associates and non-rainmaker partners. If there were happy associates working at CWT, I didn't meet any of them. The morale was extremely low. Whoever is concerned about the "transparent attempts to sully the firm's name" needs to get out of their office and really talk to the firm's associates.
Posted by: Former CWT | January 30, 2008 08:08 PM
LOL at "sully Cadwalader's name" - how can you sully a reputation that is already so bad. That's like saying you're sullying Sadam Hussein's name.
