Featured Survey: ATL Lawyer Of The Year
In last week's ATL / Lateral Link survey, we asked you to submit your nominations for Lawyer of the Year. Today, you get to vote!
The nominees, and select comments explaining why, are below:
Aaron Charney
For both the attention focused, success of action, and for the visibility [he] brought to the secondary issue of partner/associate relations (but not those kinds of relations).
Alberto Gonzales
Exemplifies why lawyers are so mistrusted in this country.
Barack Obama
The man had the credentials to do Biglaw. He chose public service instead. Although he is obviously politically ambitious, he at least appears to be in it for the people. He's almost as hot as Judicial Hottie Jeffrey Sutton. I mean, did you see the Obama Girl videos? We've all got a crush on Obama. And he just might be president next year.
Hillary Clinton
She's fabulous.
Loyola 2L
He's generated the most thoughtful discussion of law school. That, and perhaps the publicity will help him get a job.
Ray Beckerman
For his tireless defense and continuous commentary in countless RIAA cases.
Whoever helps Chipmunk lady.
Because.
We know that last one should really be a 2008 Lawyer of the Year, not a 2007 Lawyer of the Year, but we just don't care. You demanded the nomination right now.
So who should win? Cast your vote below.

It's gonna sound petty and chippy, and I'm sure she's a great attorney, but HRC failed the DC bar on the first try.
As the first African American president of the HLS law review, it is said that not only did BHO turn down a shot at biglaw, he turned down a sure path to a SCUTOS clerkship, and by definition, IMHO, a date with immortality! (Who is the real A3G now?)
Why, you ask, do I use so many abbreviations? I started out with one and just couldn't stop.

Lat,
You've nominated two democratic presidential candidates. Why not one of the republican attorneys running for president?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 23, 2008 06:27 PM
6:27:
LAT didn't nominate the attorneys listed in this poll. If you read the first sentence of the post, he refers to last week's survey requesting that READERS nominate them. Why are you blaming LAT for your failure to nominate a republican? It's like someone who failed to vote complaining that Bush got elected.

I bet Frat Stud would have won if he would have been included on this poll, why the hate, Lat?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 23, 2008 06:55 PM
Guys in my high school use to win ATL lawyer of the year, it was no big deal.

I for one am tried of Loyola 2L. (Love Hillary, though--see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLSWudoqtWE

I've been participating in the chipmunk ramp clinic at Loyola. It's really fulfilling, and I so I'd like to apologize for all the whiny shit I wrote about my school and the legal profession over the last 18 months. I just didn't realize, back then, that my true calling was in chipmunk ramp law.
Posted by: Loyola 2L | January 23, 2008 07:37 PM
Charlene Morrisseau should be on this list.
Posted by: angry black woman | January 23, 2008 07:39 PM
Yay! That's my description of Charney!
Wow, that sentence sounds convoluted now that I look at it several days later.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 23, 2008 07:53 PM
I think the American people are looking for experience. I have 35 years of experience of raising associate salaries and taking on biglaw partners. We can't afford to roll the dice on Loyola 2L. Vote for me!
Posted by: Hillary Rodham Clinton | January 23, 2008 08:02 PM
Vote for Loyola 2L. Not only is he a tireless campaigner against injustice, he's also one of the greatest legal minds of our time.

vote P'Ta mon John to bumboclaat!

Loyola 2L is so last year.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 23, 2008 09:49 PM
6:52 and others,
Why do you always capitalize Lat's name, thereby writing it "LAT"? His name is not an acronym for the Los Angeles Times or anything else - it's his last name.
Weird.

Loyola 2L is, by definition, not a lawyer. Shouldn't he be disqualified from the competition?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 23, 2008 10:17 PM
Why is it that, with the possible exception of Gonzales, every single nominee for Lawyer of the Year happens to be either an utterly despictable or a wholly inconsequential person? Many lawyers and judges have accomplished great things this year and would have been more deserving of the nomination. And before a liberal accuses me of being a "partisan hack", I should note that I actually used to consider Barack Hussein Obama as a respectable politician (albeit one who is wrong on everything) until very recently (when his pastor's relationship to Farrakhan was exposed).
In any case, whatever the merits of the candidates, there can be no non-partisan reason for including Obama and Clinton among the finalists while conspicuously omitting another presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.

There is a little Loyola 2L in all of us. Thus, we are all winners.
Posted by: TUTTLE | January 23, 2008 11:30 PM
right on 10:17. what are the odds that L2L will even pass the bar if/when he takes it?
Posted by: wes mantooth | January 24, 2008 12:09 AM
Remove Hillary Clinton from your list. She should not be praised--even satirically--in any way, shape, or form. Just ask Vince Foster.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 08:49 AM
"That, and perhaps the publicity will help him get a job."
Why is there a comma after that? Either also put a comma after publicity or don't put one at all. That's a dumb, comma.

Loyola 2L is so last year.

That's the whole point of the vote. It's for the Lawyer of the Year for 2007. 2007 was last year.
Or maybe you know that and we're trying to be clever. Sorry, you failed at that.

Damn it, Lat, I'm a long time, careful ATL poster, and I still got screwed by your server and the whole "post twice" thing on me.
Vote for Loyola 2L!
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 10:19 AM
Stop voting for L2L you lame-ass law school trolls.
Besides - he should be DQ'd he's not a LAWYER.
WSJ Law Blog was already lame enough for doing this, ATL is 100X lamer for blindly following after their lameness.

LAT - WHY DON'T YOU GROW A PAIR AND JUST NAME YOUR OWN LAWYER OF THE YEAR WITHOUT ASKING THESE LOSERS
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 10:42 AM
I agree with 10:28 AM.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 10:56 AM
This site is dominated bylittle kids.I the comments are any indcation, the average age has declined from 28 to 22
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 11:16 AM
If the comments are any indication, the average reader age on this site is no longer 28, and is more like 18-21 (with more than a few high school students posting here as well).
I cannot believe that most of the children who post here are even in law school, but for sure they are not lawyers.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 11:30 AM
I don't get why people blame BHO for his pastor's relationship with Farrakhan and Romney for Mormonism's past discrimination of blacks. I doubt that when they attend church every week, the pastors preach about Farrakhan and not allowing blacks to be in the church.
Posted by: why | January 24, 2008 11:35 AM
if you name Hillary lawyer of the year I am never returning to this website. She is a miserable biotch.
Posted by: Obama | January 24, 2008 11:38 AM
If that is anything like "bitch" you need you mouth washed out with soap.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 11:43 AM
Who the f*ck is Justin Bernold? I should have known Lat was not physically capable of saying nice things about Obama.

"Loyola 2L is, by definition, not a lawyer."
_______
Loyola 2L is, by definition, not an attorney. But he might be a lawyer. I remember during orientation of my 1L year (many moons ago), that our Dean made a big deal about the fact that law students were now legal professionals (and IIRC, lawyers), and so we had to act like professionals, etc. Does this ring a bell with anyone, or was my Dean just blowing smoke? Can law students be considered as, not attorneys, but lawyers?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 01:31 PM
Loyola 2L should be removed for two reasons: (1) as expressed by many others, he is not a lawyer (2) as we all know, he was not a single individual. There were probably hundreds of people who used the moniker during the year. In fact, I’m using it right now.
Posted by: Loyola 2L | January 24, 2008 02:17 PM
What no mustachioed lawyers? Is it because I'm fat? Or dead?
Posted by: Grover Cleveland | January 24, 2008 02:19 PM
I think Loyola 2L is stealing votes based on the false rumor that he *is* the one helping Chipmunk Lady.
I'm the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chipmunk Ramp Law and Policy, and I've never heard of L2L except through this blog.
PS: our symposium is in 2 months.

Kilgore was here. (Loyola 2L also.)

1:31,
My Dean gave us the same speech right before graduation. So either we went to the same law school or this statement is standard for Deans during orientation/graduation.

Vote for HRC - she can hide billing records like nobody else!
Posted by: The Missing Rose Law Billing Records | January 24, 2008 06:21 PM
The appellation "Chipmunk lady" didn't seem appropriate. Irreverent or mocking nicknames may be okay for people who did something wrong.
Posted by: Anon | January 25, 2008 05:05 AM
To a lot of us, the soul crushing debt of law school and the lack of meaningful opportunity for new lawyers are the most important issues facing the profession. Loyola 2L was a vocal spokesman for our cause. Why are people surprised that we are turning out to vote for him in large numbers?
Posted by: Guy in Gorilla Suit | January 25, 2008 02:15 PM
clearly there are a ton of poors in cheap suits with TTT diplomas out there.
sad.
hopefully you all catch on doing car crash law and insurance defense for fast food money.
