Larry Tribe Has A Brain Tumor

Laurence Tribe Laurence H Tribe Larry Tribe Above the Law.gifNo, that's not some insult hurled at the distinguished constitutional law professor by a right-wing zealot; it's a fact. From a memorandum that went out to Harvard Law School students this morning:

In order to help you plan your spring schedules, I need to let you know that Professor Laurence Tribe’s class this spring is being cancelled because he has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor that is benign but will require medical treatment. Professor Tribe has asked me to convey this information and his regrets about this necessary decision.

We wish Professor Tribe the best of luck with his treatment regimen, as well as a speedy recovery.

From one tipster:

It's just a matter of time before knee-jerk dittohead-wannabes bust out jokes like "Isn't liberalism a form of a brain disorder?" Then again, this could end up straight out of Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You, if the removal of the brain tumor turns Tribe into a fire-breathing right-winger.

Professor Tribe is a public figure, and he has surely had every epithet in the book leveled at him, multiple times. Nevertheless, even if he's a big boy (who has better things to do than read blog comments), please keep the discussion civil. Thanks.

Personally, I live Tribe (at least since he came around to some Right-thinking on the 2nd Amendment).

Uh. No. There was no email about that sent out this morning.

[STUDENTS]: Netlocker Maintenance
News@Law - Friday, January 11, 2008
[STUDENTS]: Spring Clinical Add/Drop - January 14-18

Those are the school-wide emails from the past 24 hours.

Perhaps bot the whole school, but it was sent out to those of us who have to figure out what the hell we do now that we're in the class. I wasted my top pick on this. It's like I drafted Len Bias or something.

The email was also sent to students on the waitlist for the course (in addition to students admitted to the class).

From a rabid conservative former student of Professor Tribe: You have my prayers for a full and speedy recovery, Professor.

Once again, Lat's critics get pwn3d (like the commenters from yesterday who said the CWT layoff news was like something out of the tabloid Star).

1:13 -- Wow, that really sucks. What could possibly be worse than not being able to take a class you wanted . . . think, think . . . oh, right. Having a brain tumor.
Way to be a self-absorbed schmuck.

Wow, a liberal imputes insults to a conservative that have never been made, then criticizes him for them. Nice work, lib.

Isn't it a bit ironic that the tipster sarcastically disparages conservatives, thereby committing the same misdeed (i.e., politicalization) of which she accused others?

Sounds like the tipster is merely the left's equivalent of a "knee-jerk dittohead-wannabe". She needs to get a life.

That's too bad. We hired him to work on one of our cases once. He is a very, very nice guy. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

I'm also a conservative, and I TA'd and RA'd for him in law school. He is a genuinely warm, giving person, and a hell of a professor to boot. I wish him a speedy recovery.

It is good to hear fellow conservatives like 1:24 and 3:03 saying kind words about Professor Tribe. If Professor Yoo were to suffer from a disease, you would never see the leftists at Berkeley offering their support; rather, they would take advantage of his hardship to further express their hate and rejoice at a political opponent's adversity.

I, too, wish Professor Tribe prompt recovery, both from his tumor and from his liberalism.

Mr. Tribe, your former students wish you the best of luck for a speedy and complete recovery.

Far-left views and social foibles notwithstanding, Mr. Tribe is not just a good man but a voice of reason amid a cacophony of BS, a true defender of the faith, and the world will be the worse for wear in his absence.

Best wishes to Prof. Tribe. (And pity the shallow tipster who took it as an opportunity to take a political swipe at the other side).

My thoughts are with Professor Tribe and I wish him a speedy recovery.

All--if you couldn't tell from the comment thread, conservative and liberal students alike love his class.

I like the injection of a partisan element into all of this. I am sure that no liberals would have anything to say if Bush, Cheney, or Clarence Thomas developed a brain tumor. Right.

I just heard of this. Worked for the Tribes many years ago. Larry is one of the most good-hearted and principled people I know even if he is a freaking liberal; he is a Constitutional scholar, a mathematician, and an artist, a rare combination . I wish him all wellness. We need the good people to stay for a while.
