More Tech Troubles for American University
Remember MacGate, at American University's Washington College of Law? It was resolved. But technology problems persist at WCL:
Date: January 28, 2008 2:34:20 PM EST
Subject: Wireless at WCLDear Student Body:
The following problems have been discovered with the WCL network:
1. All access points in room 101 were either turned off, or nonfunctional for the past two years.
2. All access points on the 5th floor were located in elevator shafts, or other places where they did not provide coverage.
3. Certain points on the 6th floor were assigned the wrong IP address, and so did not provide access.
The Technology department is working to address these problems. If you continue to experience problems with the internet, please inform the Student Services Committee at [xxxx]. You can also file an online trouble ticket, when you find yourself in an area with internet access, at [xxxx].
Regards,
Student Services Committee
At first we thought this was satirical, but we were assured that it's not: "This is for real -- we got it from the SBA today. Our wireless has been terrible recently."
Your friends at ATL obviously want you to have wireless access in class. But we realize that some professors contend that internet access in classrooms is an impediment to instruction.

Haha, my school sucks. Why did Shearman hire me from there?

2d!
Posted by: second | January 28, 2008 04:11 PM
because shearman sucks
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:19 PM
Oh yeah. Shearman does suck.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:21 PM
AU's administration has to be the worst of any university's.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:23 PM
...Wait the technology department of a law school is working to resolve problems?
This isn't even a story.
Posted by: anon | January 28, 2008 04:28 PM
Yes, it's been awhile since I've been able to bag on some TTT.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:37 PM
I veto this post on stupidity and irrelevance grounds. Remove it immediately.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:41 PM
Working to resolve problems approximately 2 years old is standard operating procedure for most universities.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:48 PM
At American, the quality of the wireless is rivaled only by the quality of the graduates.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:48 PM
Worst post ever.
Posted by: Authority on Lame Posts | January 28, 2008 04:49 PM
yeah, shearman does suck. Dave Curtiss is a lamebo.
Posted by: tombot | January 28, 2008 04:49 PM
People wouldn't show up to class at my law school if wireless wasn't working.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:56 PM
This is possibly the most pointless post in this blog's illustrious history.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:59 PM
Wireless connection in classrooms is the only way I can withstand the bullshit rant some of my professors like to deliver. It is enough that I have to learn the law on my own (god knows professors don't teach it). At least let me catch up on my celebrity gossip while I am forced to sit through your 1.25 hour BS speech. We all know that law school is simply a 3 year, $120K barrier to entry into the profession. So, at least let me enjoy myself in class.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 04:59 PM
My T14 blocks wireless access to all classrooms. So people just play solitaire.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 05:00 PM
My wireless provider blocks access to all T14 schools and TTT firms and firms that aren't as good as mine, and schools that aren't as good as mine. What? What? What? No one has any idea what I'm talking about. Where are you? WHERE ARE YOU? Where ARE you?
No one knows!
I don't know, Man. It's just that this is pretty much the crappiest post on this blog. Like, that I have "EVER" seen, yo. I mean it's crappy. Not like that KUmari Fulbright post earlier. That was crack journalism right there.
Blah.

448(2), Tom Goldstein will have you killed by 2Ls from Harvard and Yale, who are instructed in killing by prestigious and well-known killers at the secret clinic that he co-teaches with Chuck Norris.

I (and I mean ME, bros!) just got a laptop computer for taking notes in class, and I think that it's great to use laptop computers for learning. They are also good for checking out the "Tripel-X" sights and for some email jokes (yo uknow, like onese you forward around@!). I have a serious question, and it's important because I'm going to be a summer associate very soon: do lawyers mostly use computers or libraries? We have both at my law school. :-)
Posted by: barry | January 28, 2008 05:24 PM
WOWZA - does American University even have a law schiool. How fast can we say TTT?!!
Posted by: anon | January 28, 2008 05:28 PM
I'd kill for wireless coverage that good
Posted by: berkeley law | January 28, 2008 05:32 PM
I'm currently sitting in Room 101, and I can't connect. Can anybody help me with this? I really need your tippps!
Posted by: Talahassee AU Guy | January 28, 2008 05:32 PM
Seriously, Lat. If you keep posting about this kind of crap, I will no longer check out your blog.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 05:38 PM
Lat, do a post on the Skadden hottest female associate contest: http://skaddeninsider.blogspot.com/2008/01/hottest-female-associate.html
Posted by: anonymous | January 28, 2008 05:39 PM
Maybe AU should teach their students network engineering and maintenance skills. At least that way they'd be employable by top tier firms in need of IT guys.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 05:40 PM
Shearman gives jobs out like AU gives out admittance letters to people with 155s. Don't feel special you douchebag. Any good firm wouldn't hire at AU.
Posted by: HLS | January 28, 2008 05:43 PM
TWO YEARS in room 101? someone should be fired (or promoted, more likely).
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 05:57 PM
Oooh, I've got one: Sherman gives out jobs at AU like HLS gives out admittance letters to douchebags.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 05:57 PM
I would give my left nut to get into AU....
Georgetown Night 2L
Posted by: American Rockz! | January 28, 2008 05:59 PM
HLS @ 543 got pwn3d.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 06:06 PM
HLS - have you even seen a list of the firms that hire at AU? Is Skadden worthless? Latham? Ropes? W&C? Many students get hired out of AU to these firms every year. The research skills you've picked up and your ability to put together a solid argument have really benefited from that HLS education--if you even go there. Consult the list and do some research you douche.
Posted by: HLS | January 28, 2008 06:11 PM
Three points for you, HLS:
1) No one who has completed 1L gives a shit about where others went to law school, especially if they have already graduated.
2) No one over the age of 18 gives a shit about the score another got on a standardized test, or would use such scores to judge another person.
3) No one with half a brain would proudly extol their law firm's hiring policies in public....ever. Could you be more of a suck-up, try-hard BigLaw whore?
But good luck with your sad little life....

My penis was accepted at AU

Was it's name Pepe Gonzalez, or Tayshaun Jenkins?
Posted by: WCL | January 28, 2008 06:51 PM
i went to AU undergrad -- then to a T3 law school -- and now work in Biglaw. Bite me.
Posted by: au undergrad | January 28, 2008 06:56 PM
your entire life has been a TTT, sucks to be you. you should have read more as a youngster.
Posted by: ANON | January 28, 2008 07:03 PM
This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Lat, you were starting to scare me with those law firm layoff rumors. But, now that you're posting this crap, I can see that all is well in the legal profession. I have the same feeling I had when Britney Spears news started to replace 9/11 coverage. I mean, who cares about the IT situation at AU or any other law school for that matter?
Posted by: Who Gives a F#*K? | January 28, 2008 07:03 PM
My TT said they were going to expand the wifi back in 2004. Still haven't done it, from what I've heard. Why didn't that get posted?
Posted by: Northeastern Wifi | January 28, 2008 07:11 PM
Good firms hire at about the top 5% at AU, if they recruit there at all. Some good DC firms may recruit there as a nod to a local school, but make no mistake, AU WCL is TTT.
Oh yeah, and Dean Grossman is a snaggletoothed choad.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 28, 2008 07:29 PM
7:29, you make fun of a school for being TTT yet know the name of the dean. Sounds like some self loathing at WCL.
Posted by: anon | January 28, 2008 07:45 PM
I'm really disappointed nobody's called Dean Jaffe a douchebag yet. Come on, people!
Posted by: WCL Grad | January 28, 2008 08:03 PM
I don't know about Jaffe - but Karim sure is.
Posted by: Anon | January 28, 2008 08:10 PM
I'm a 3L at WCL and, ironically, didn't even get this email from the SBA!!!
Posted by: WCL 3L | January 28, 2008 09:56 PM
I didn't get that email either! I would call it "fitting" rather than ironic.
Posted by: wcl 3L (v2) | January 28, 2008 11:54 PM
I love WCL. I get to hang out in a less competitive environment, schmooze with sexy human rights ladies all day, avoid the pretentious assholes at top ranked schools, and STILL get a biglaw job upon graduation.
WCL IS THE SHIT!!!

"sexy" human rights ladies?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 29, 2008 08:37 AM
Im a 3L at WCL who transferred from HLS because the sexy human rights ladies are dreamy and I can get a BigLaw job from anywhere

4. We also discovered that, for the past four years, the "access points" installed on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th floors were actually 1991 Sony Discmans with a bent coat hanger jammed in the headphone jack.
Posted by: Nick Burns | January 29, 2008 11:11 AM
take this down - it's stupid.
and I love when people call it TTT - it's a tier one school so I'm not really sure what people are trying to do there.
Posted by: anon | January 29, 2008 12:44 PM
Well played Nick Burns.
Posted by: Well played | January 29, 2008 02:27 PM
5:28: "WOWZA - does American University even have a law schiool. How fast can we say TTT?!!"
It's top tier and you spelled "school" wrong, idiot.
Oh, and Jaffe is a total douchebag.
Posted by: WCL 3L | January 29, 2008 04:42 PM
7:45 - Not only do I know the dean's name, but as my post reveals, I also know that he is a snaggletoothed choad.
However, I am not a self loathing WCL student as your post assumes (although who could blame me if I was?). To the contrary, I am the happiest transfer you anonymously know!
Posted by: Anonymous | January 29, 2008 05:50 PM
Lat, my friends and I at WCL didn't receive this email. I seriously doubt its truthfulness. A little more verification before you put it up here?
Posted by: WCL 3L' | January 29, 2008 08:19 PM
8:19, it went out to everyone who was a member of the SBA group on TWEN.
Posted by: WCL 1L | January 30, 2008 01:42 AM
@8:19 You and your friends must be lazy slackasses. Go on TWEN, and go to SBA's section, and click "Virtual Senate Floor", you'll see quite a lot of discussion on it, including a very prominent 3L Senator calling Jaffe and Grossman out.
Posted by: WCL 1L 2 | January 30, 2008 01:49 AM
WCL is, as had repeatedly been said here and elsewhere, a third-rate institution for which students pay a premium price. (i.e. they want to be in DC but they are too stupid to get into GW or Georgetown.)
It lets in a huge amount of AA admits because that is the only way it can show any hiring by top rate firms. Winston and Strawn, et al. go dumpster diving at WCL to get their minority numbers up.
But woot - the diversity !!! Its "one of the best law schools for Hispanics".
