K&L Gates: Reality TV Stars Welcome Here!
When law students are choosing among law firms, they inquire into such predictable things. What's the firm's billable hour requirement? How is work distributed? What about pro bono? For lawyers involved in recruiting, it must get boring to have to answer the same questions over and over again.
So law students, next time you interview with a firm, ask about something that really matters: What is the firm's policy towards associates who want to participate in reality television shows?
Is the firm supportive of such endeavors? Can I take a leave of absence for the show's filming, and then return in good standing? If so, will my year-end bonus get prorated?
As it turns out, Biglaw shops take different approaches to reality TV. It was rumored that Sidley Austin was none too pleased when associate David Otunga decided to participate in I Love New York 2 (and he is no longer at the firm). As for his performance on the show, the Harvard Law School grad made it to the final three, before losing to "Buddha" and "Tailor Made."
Contrast Sidley's reaction to that of K&L Gates. The firm allowed an associate in its Washington office -- the highly attractive Denise Gitsham, 30, a recent Georgetown Law grad and former Bush aide -- to take leave to be on "The Bachelor." Now it welcomes her back with open arms. From an email recently sent around by D.C.-based partner Mark Ruge:
All:This Monday, at 9:30 p.m. on ABC, is the season premier of the hit television show, The Bachelor. ("The Bachelor" is the nation's highest-rated reality TV show in the 18-45 female demographic group. It is now entering its 12th season on network television.)
Believe it or not, one of the contestants this season will be our own associate Denise Gitsham, who was away "on location" during much of February. Here is a link to the show's web site and Denise's bio:
http://abc.go.com/primetime/bachelor/index?pn=bios#t=bachelorettes&d=85609
Denise's name, photo, and bio were submitted to the show by her cousin, and Denise was selected to be one of the show's 25 bachelorettes out of more than 12,000 applicants. She was under extreme confidentiality requirements during her adventure (and still is to some degree). At least now, though, she is free to admit what she was doing during her mysterious leave in February.
Just thought you would like to know...
Mark
K&L Gates lawyers: if you need to send something to Denise via intra-office mail, the delivery should be accompanied by a rose. Thanks.
P.S. We can't find Denise Gitsham on the firm website (although we did find a "Denise Stiffarm" in Seattle). We're guessing that Denise has been too busy filming The Bachelor to fill out all that pesky bar admission paperwork.
Update: Denise Gitsham is now on the K&L Gates website.
Denise Gitsham bio [The Bachelor]

Let me be the FIRST to say that is pretty cool of the firm.
She's a 10.
reality tv shows are lame and stupid and dumb
Denise prob. isn't yet on the firm's website because she graduated from Georgetown this past May and is prob. still awaiting admission to the DC bar, which we all know takes forever.
>
Ladies, these harem-mentality bachelorette shows make us look desperate and pathetic. Get yourself some pride.
Pretty sure I went to law school with her at Gtown - class of '07. Smart girl, and staunch conservative.
She worked for Harriet Miers before starting at Georgetown. Even though we were on opposite ends of the political spectrum, we got along great.
She's a credit to the Georgetown night program.
Very nice!
I know that Lord, Bissell & Brook was pretty cool when one of their associates appeared on the Apprentice. I'm not sure how they felt when she appeared in Playboy. Come to think of it, they also employed a former cast member of High School Reunion who was also in Playboy. Something in the water there, I guess.
There's no RICO indictment of the firm. I just read it. It's just a re-hash of the old stuff from years ago.
Denise is just as gorgeous in person, and she's a fantastic person too!!
Denise Stiffarm is a great name. Anyone know her from her time in St. Louis, at U. of Wash.?
what a ho. K&L should be ashamed of having a pseudo-prostitute working for them.
If I were a GC (or anyone at a client in a position to decide what firms will get what work), I would look quite unfavorably upon those that seem strangely supportive of their associates' participation on such absurd programs. As 1:26 (2) notes, in this case, it reflects poorly on women lawyers. (Much as an appearance on "I Love New York 2" reflects poorly on an African-American lawyer, though it is obviously more degrading, ridiculous and unbecoming of an attorney than the "Bachelor.") If (and it's a big, "rumored" IF) Sidley sent David Otunga packing for his ridiculous non-law pursuits, kudos.
Would you want a contestant on the "Bachelor" or "I Love New York 2" handling your complex cross-border transactional work or bet-the-company litigation?
wonder what services I might expect of her -- will any clients or partners take her seriously now as a lawyer at a BIGLAW
Good to know K&L partners know how to spell "premiere." Pretty indicative of work product in general at that TTT.
Five Diamond
1:26(1):
"Awesome" as in "hot", or as in "A really great person with everything going for her...why the hell is she stooping to reality TV, esp the harem cattlecall that is The Bachelor?"
I guess only time will tell if she'll join the ranks of attractive young ladies who, having had their 15 minutes of fame and liked it, attempt to extend it by a few minutes (and a few $$) by taking up Playboy on its offer of tasteful, artsy photographs.
Very very pretty.
Anyone know where Eliza of "Survivor" fame is headed this fall. I believe she's a 3L now (and was given a leave by her school -- Brooklyn? Fordham? -- to film survivor. I guess Tribal Counsel counts as Trial Ad. there...)
Ha ha. No one on "Survivor" has gotten any fame since 1999.
What possesses a smart, incredibly good-looking woman to humiliate herself on national TV on this ridiculous show, when she would have no problem attracting distinguished gentlemen through traditional means? Anyone? Bueller?
From what I understand she has taken the bar once and is giving it a second shot in August thus why she is not on the firm website.
Agreeing to go on any reality show is poor judgment. Everyone eventually looks like an ass w/cameras following them around all day. I don't think it is unreasonable for a client to think such poor judgment could carry over into legal work.
2:04:
"What possesses a smart, incredibly good-looking woman to humiliate herself on national TV on this ridiculous show, when she would have no problem attracting distinguished gentlemen through traditional means? Anyone? Bueller?"
Judging by the people who post on this blog, you're making an incredibly off-base assumption. Distinguished gentlemen are few and far-between. Not to say that the new Bachelor couldn't be a total sleaze either. They usually are.
Flush!
K&L has never not had folks who didn't yet have a bar on their Web site.
bozos.
For her sake, I hope she didn't win. Can't say I'm terribly impressed with the latest Bachelor....
She was a friend of mine in law school. Staunch conservative (even though she is hapa), nice, and pretty. Was in the night school and went to their Seattle office. Don't know why she did the show as she does not come off as someone who wants attention, but as long as it is what she wants, then best of luck to her.
2:33 - Per my good friend, you are mistaken, K&L does not post people on their external website until they are licensed.
"even though she is hapa..." What's this supposed to mean? Are hapas known to be liberal? News to this hapa.
"I know that Lord, Bissell & Brook was pretty cool when one of their associates appeared on the Apprentice. I'm not sure how they felt when she appeared in Playboy. Come to think of it, they also employed a former cast member of High School Reunion who was also in Playboy. Something in the water there, I guess."
TTTness?
"Smart girl, and staunch conservative."
"Smart" and "staunch conservative" are contradictions in terms.
Hapa chick desperately competing with a bunch of other desperate chicks for some gay white guy on "the Bachelor" doesn't exactly burnish her intellectual luster, either.
Georgetown = TTT
I'm loking down on her from my T5 spot at PENN Law, Dickinson Campus.
I love my firm.
2:33 - great use of the double negative!
What the hell is a "hapa?" Half Pennsylvanian? Half Parrot? I've never heard of this before.
It is not a "hapa." It is just "hapa." And it is a Hawaiian word for half which has entered the vernacular as part caucasian/part another ethnicity.
If you don't know what it is how do you know the "ha" stands for half?
K&L Gates just got a huge publicity bump in that one. Kudos to them.
Unless she did something stupid on camera...
well - what are the two halves? Someone said half-parrot, but I don't think she looks parrot. If anything, she's half-penssylvanian; the Ivy-kind, you know, Penn State.
Stiffarm is a great last name.
2:50-
Minorities tend to lean more liberal. In this group, Asians tend to follow this trend. As Denise is half caucasian, half chinese, it would follow that she would be liberal as well. She is not. Thus, she would be an exception. And it would appear that you are as well. We do not live in a world of absolutes, but on ATL, generalities prevail due to anonymity.
Denise is just as hot in person. I had class with her. She probably just thought the show would be fun- her friend put her in and the show called her- I know her old boyfriend, too, from the Marine Corps.
Anyhow, I'm sure she won't embarrass herself on the show, and I'm sure she'll do great at K&L Gates.
3:21 - "minorities" is often a term used to describe URM's. And indeed, "minorities," as previously defined, are more liberal. Asians are not URM's. Hapas aren't even close. I would bet that the division in the Asian/Hapa community is more like 50/50. But what do I know? I wouldn't be so quick to generalize about Asians and especially hapas. Just one hapa's opinion.
Ah, Michelle Malkin? She's a hateful, venom spewing, fact-ignoring, right-wing blowhard.
Believe it or not, she wasn't even a top ten at GULC...and I'm not speaking of her GPA.
Stacy Rotner, who works at Sidley, was on the Apprentice. Season Two I believe. I heard she was a staff attorney prior to being on the show and is now an associate.
Not sure why she was treated better than the other Sidley associate.

3:40, as stupid as the "Apprentice" is, do you seriously not see the difference between it and "I Love New York 2"?
Sure, contenstants on the "Apprentice" have to perform silly tasks and, for some, their personalities are presented in a bad light. But for the most part, the show is mostly a bunch of lawyers and business people, who must succeed in various "business" oriented tasks, show leadership, etc., then report to a board room to make their case or face termination. The winner lands a VP job within the Trump organization. If only some of their tasks involved mindless doc review and diligence, the show would come very close to portrarying life at a large law firm.
3:54, I have never watched I love New York and have no idea what it is about.
Alexis Young was also on the Bachelor a while ago
http://www.ccsb.com/docs/bios/Young.htm
You would think that she would be able to find a good guy on her own? What, the Bush administration doesn't hire hot pages that she could have hooked up with...maybe Foley had dibs on them? In the end, all the girls come off as desperate skanks. The only winner is the bachelor er douchebag, who gets to makeout with all of them. I hope I get stuck doing doc review with her soon...late nights...a lil bubbly...some of my nasty salsa steps. I don't know what it is about swiveling hips with these ladies...
A compendium of all things "I Love New York":
http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/i_love_new_york_2/series.jhtml
I would fire a paralegal (man or woman) for appearing on the show. I might permit a paralegal to appear on the "Bachelor," but not a lawyer.
S&C let a first year do the Amazing Race back in 2002.
3:28-
Asians and hapas tend to live on the western seaboard or in big metropolitan areas in the East (plus Chicago). These places veer sharply to the left as they generally have a more educated population, and particularly in California (minus Orange County) have a tradition of openmindedness. Hence more liberal. And as hapas compose way over half of Hawaii, there is no question as to that state being liberal.
eliza goes to fordham. shes working at heller ehrman (nyc). shes finishing a semester late.
So what's causal, 4:25? Geography, levels of education? Race? Half race? I mean, you could have just as easily said Denise is a staunch conservative, which is surprising b/c she's from CA or HI. Or for that matter, it's surprising because she has a law degree and most lawyers are liberal. But you chose the fact that she was hapa. And you based your generalization on her race (as opposed to all the others), which I presume you believe is most closely linked to one's political leanings. I think that's problematic. As you youself seem to suggest, it's her regional origin and not racial origin that's responsible for your surprise.
Though admittedly anecdotal, I've been around well-educated, AZ and hapas my entire life, from both the west and east coasts and I can't think of any simple generalization of their (our) views. They range from bleeding heart liberal to scarily right-wing. I just think you're assumption is misguided on AZ/hapas.
Does Denise Stiffram know her bio is linked on here? and by the way, University of Washington is in SEATTLE, jackass. I hope you were being sarcastic.
I'm actually impressed at how positive most of the comments are today...oh wait, I know why - it's spring break for a lot of law schools...so nobody's reading.
I'm actually impressed at how positive most of the comments are today...oh wait, I know why - it's spring break for a lot of law schools...so nobody's reading.
I would let her lick my ass. How much do you think she would charge me for that?
University of Washington is not the same as Washington University (St. Louis)
She's a really fun and friendly person. Nothing but good things to say about her.
First of all, 5:01, it's Stiffarm, not Stiffram. Second, everyone knows the U. of Wash. is in St. Louis? You must be a Penn State Quaker.
Lol at 5:31. Agreed. But location aside, both U Wash and Wash U are TTT. =)
Idiots, the school in St. Louis isn't called U. of Wash, it's called Wash U.
Did half of you guys pay any attention when doing law school apps? Maybe I'm different in that I applied to quite a few places, and actually bothered looking through the USN list....
Wash U is in St Louis, U of Washington is in Seattle. Then again, both schools are TTT, so getting them mixed up is somewhat understandable and certainly no big loss.
Amen, 2:04!
"Smart" and "stauch conservative" aren't mutually exclusive. Why do so many law students/lawyers think it's not only a reasonable position to think otherwise, but then pat themselves on the back in the next breath for being so openminded?
Party of tolerance my ass.
It might be a bad sign, but the two posts about "hapa" possibly referring to someone who is half-parrot were hilarious. And I'm not even high. Really.
White Girls + Asian Guys = 5-Diamond Denise Gitsham!!!
Classmate. Remembered that our Con Law professor gave her a tough time during the Bush v. Gore class (on the day Kerry lost the general election?). Have nothing but good things to say about her: down to earth, bright, and very kind. Yes, she is better looking in person.
9:56-
I was in that class too (Stromseth, right?), which is among the reasons I identified her as a staunch conservative (1:26(3)). In any case, she is definitely a nice, bright girl and will probably represent herself well on television. Probably just sees this as a fun thing to do before working the grind of firm life.
Also, IIRC, didn't she audition for the section 7 commencement speach?
Yes, I am pretty sure that she did audition for the commencement speech.
I think it's great K&L allows its associates freedom to be themselves. But if she cries because the dude she and 15 other girls dated for a week dumps her, I don't think I would be able to work with her.
K&L is using this associate as some sort of publicity stunt. It is an unstable firm that is creating "franchise" offices around the world for the sake of expanding. While it grants this associate a leave of absence to be on a reality tv show, the firm is quietly laying off associates.
Watched the show last night. This girl was eliminated. Her picture on ATL is very "enhanced." She is not at all attractive and her pro-Bush crap obviously bored The Bachelor to death. She said that she also worked for Rove. The Bachelor is British-knowing that the vast majority of Brits are against the Iraq War, maybe she should have toned down the Bush love even to be able to stick around a while longer. Bottom line-pretty homely and boring girl.
01:26-- Too bad you've never seen her in person--your enhanced comment is totally off the mark. She's also the farthest thing from boring. The show edited her to be what they wanted her to be. That's how Hollywood works.
4:13, I don't think so. This girl had bad skin and a horse face. You obviously have very low standards for female attractiveness. Also, the way she spoke to the guy was very condescending. She said something to the effect that she was very surprised how politically aware people in London were when she visited there. As opposed to what, the average dumb-ass hick, NASCAR loving, inbred Bush supporter? Mind you, this guy went to Cambridge and is actually very attractive and charming. It was very obvious that he found her to be a total snoozefest. She came off as a typical Republican tight-ass bitch. Good riddance.
I knew Denise in law school and she is smokin' hot - that was the consensus among every guy I knew. Her picture on ABC doesn't even begin to do her justice, and the lighting was shit on the show. And, if you actually listened to what she said, she said what she LOVED about Brits is that they were so aware of world events - go back and check it out online. Not even close to condescending. Sorry, but, you could not be more off on your assessment - and this is coming from someone who knows many who would agree that she is gorgeous and fantastic in every way.
Whatevs. People in DC have very low standards for attractiveness b/c most of them are FUG. Also, bad lighting will never make a gorgeous person look like crap-it might make them look less attractive but not totally unattractive and this girl is REALLY not attractive in the least. You seem to be a bit fixated on her, buddy. Umm, can you say LOSER STALKER!!! Also, anyone who would brag about working for Bush/Rove in this day and age in a crowd that is not totally made up of Republican hacks is a SOCIAL MORON. Why don't you go back to your game of D&D and leave the social commentary to people who matter. The girl is a DOG. End of discussion.
Bored, you're obviously deaf, dumb, blind and illiterate ... but her pictures are all over the internet in many other forums, and all can judge for themselves. And, since the consensus among everyone else who knew her in law school and posted on this forum is that she's smokin', you'll remain the lone dissenter.
Here's a clip from Georgetown's Law's website - Denise's audition for commencement speaker last year: https://www.law.georgetown.edu/webcast/eventDetail.cfm?eventID=286.
Denise is witty, beautiful, and down to earth -a 10!
I went to high school with her and was in love with her back then. She is incredibly smart and beautiful. You really can't get any better than Denise.
I grew up with Denise - she IS the total package. She was valedictorian, class president and homecoming queen. Beautiful, poised, and bilingual (her mom's chinese) - an all around stunner.
