Project Law School: A Video Parody from Cardozo Law
In the 2009 U.S. News & World Report law school rankings, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law fell from #52 to #55. See here.
It's a little surprising, since the past year has been good for Cardozo. Their bar passage rate is now the third-highest among New York law schools. One of their graduates is currently clerking for Justice Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court.
And, most importantly, their Law Revue is turning out delightful videos. If you share our love of Project Runway, you'll enjoy this good-natured spoof (film by Ryan B. Finkel). It's a little long, and somewhat uneven -- but on the whole, it's well-done and quite fun. The film is expertly put together, with the actual Project Runway footage elegantly interspersed into the fake footage, and the performances -- especially those by the Heidi Klum and Chris March impersonators -- are hilarious and compelling. Check it out below (plus links to two videos from last year's show).
So what's responsible for Cardozo's USNW&R decline? The booting of littering-and-loitering law students from the fifth-floor faculty lounge? Rampant "expensive umbrella" and iPod theft? Your guesses are welcome.

I heard Penn Law stole Cardozo's all-star from Joe in a Book. Huge grab for Penn.
Philly to 190!

I bet those kids at Cardozo with jobs love to strut about their school lording over the peasants. It must be like lord of the flies in there.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:21 PM
In an interesting twist, I heard that Cardozo Law Revue and Fordham Law had their after-parties at the same Karaoke bar and they almost came to fisticuffs. Apparently, a cat fight almost broke out.

Did my 1L year at Cardozo before escaping to T10-er pastures. Lots of smart kids there. Too bad nobody tells them that unless you are top 10%, you are going to the Law Department.

Posted by: Turned Off | March 31, 2008 02:24 PM
oh for god's sake. it's because of small variations in the statistical sample. is there any prestige difference between 52 and 59? who cares about the fucking rankings?
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:25 PM
2:25, other than "T10" and "Not"... nobody worth mentioning.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:29 PM
It might have something to do with one of their graduates booting themselves out of the 70th floor of the Empire State Building. $180K debt, dim job prospects. What a toilet!!!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:31 PM
2:31,
I think that dude was just fucked up, independently of where he got his JD. Pretty low of you to go there just to put down a law school.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:39 PM
2:31, I would bet that J. Stevens would disagree with your characterization of Cardozo Law as a toilet.
Posted by: anon | March 31, 2008 02:41 PM
If the credit market stays where it is, a lot more schools will resemble "toilets" in terms of job placement.
TTT = school where only top 10-15% get jobs that justify the debt load. Today that's Cardozo; tomorrow it'll be Fordham.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:47 PM
People who keep throwing around "TTT" only do so because they have a small penis. When you're 45 nobody gives a f*** where you went to law school - it all comes down to how hot your wife is or whether, for that matter, you've been able to avoid acquiring one.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:51 PM
2:47 could not get into fordham. Dont hate buddy. Fordham grads will probably give you a job (temping)....its part of the jesuit tradition....to help others and all.
Posted by: Go Fordham! | March 31, 2008 02:53 PM
2:53 - what kind of "job" is it that is part of the "jesuit tradition"?
Posted by: anon | March 31, 2008 02:56 PM
at least it seems like cardozo students have some personality and humor. can the same be said at other law schools?
Posted by: anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:57 PM
ha! that video was hilarious! good job cardozo!
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 02:59 PM
Mr Punon, aka 256,
You, as a ttt grad/student did not see the paren with the word "temping" in the middle?
I was not talking about the type of job you performed to get through law school.
Posted by: anon? what kinda name is that? | March 31, 2008 03:01 PM
2:57: Good point. The skits from Columbia et al. are always painfully boring.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 03:01 PM
2:57, yes. See, e.g., UVA's 100 year old Libel Show.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 03:44 PM
Ok - I think I can clear this up:
Penn State is a state school and has a renowned football team that plays in the Ivy League athletic conference. It has a law school which was consistently ranked in the top 20 but has dropped to #77 as of this year.
University of Penn (State Philadelphia campus) is a private school, and its football team plays in the Big 10 athletic conference. It has a law school which was in the tier2 but has recently risen to the top 7.
Posted by: hell | March 31, 2008 03:44 PM
3:44 - what are you clearing up? Everybody knows that Penn State and UPenn are completely separate law schools. And, get your facts straight. You are way off in your explanation.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 03:54 PM
UVA Law Libel Show videos should be up on YouTube in a couple of week's time (show was last week) and I can guarantee they contain 100% less man boobage and at least 30% more funny.

3:54 - heard of trolls much?
Posted by: Gee mister, you are gullible! | March 31, 2008 04:13 PM
3:44 is just wrong. Penn State (Philly campus) is the one rated #7. UPenn (Wharden campus) is rated #77. I don't understand how people keep mixing them up.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 04:17 PM
I took my MPRE at the UPenn - ITT Campus, the one near Hooters. Pretty nice mechanics bay they got there.

4:07 - I was at the show. It was better than this, but it wasn't funny.

Yeah, 45 year old "bachelors" are widely admired in our society . . .
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 04:29 PM
No, no, no. Penn acquired Dickinson Law from Penn State, who still has their campus in Philly. Penn now has two campuses-- one in Carlisle and one in University Park. Penn State just has the one campus in Philly. It also has a football stadium that seats over 100k people. Penn State is ranked number 7, next to its big ten foe Michigan, while Penn is ranked 77, close to Penn State's other foes, ohio state and cornell.
You think people could keep this straight.

did anyone notice that US News reported cornell's bar passage rate as higher than cardozo's? i thought cardozo was 3rd in the state, right behind nyu and columbia?
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 05:50 PM
Why would anyone worth providing a legal education to look that closely at those stats, 5:50?
Posted by: Anonymous | March 31, 2008 06:06 PM
Penn State's grads mostly go to NYC straight from Philly, so it might as well be a New York school. If you factor that in, Cardozo and Cornell are 4th and 5th.

JERUSALEM - Israel announced plans Monday for 1,400 new homes on land the Palestinians claim for a future state — just hours after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ended a peacekeeping mission to the region.

my maid went to Cardozo. she don't miss a trick and is especially good with stains
Posted by: damn TRUEff | March 31, 2008 09:25 PM
2:24, you could do a lot worse than the Law Department. See e.g., Staten Island DA/Queens PD/Skadden Associate.
I went to a T14 and chose to go to the Law Dept. I also had friends who went to places like Skadden, and came to the LD after a year of being abused at BigLaw. No billing, decent hours and 4 weeks of paid leave you can actually take goes a long way towards a happy life, despite having to stretch your paycheck to pay NY rents.

Are the people commenting here on Penn State versus U Penn continuing some kind of inside joke? Penn State is hours away from Philadelphia, while UPenn is the largest employer in Philadelphia.
Penn State's law school is in Carlisle, PA, near the center of the state. See http://www.dsl.psu.edu/about/visitus.cfm
UPenn's law school is in Philadelphia, on the eastern edge of the state. See http://www.law.upenn.edu/visitus.html
Maybe I should just feel dumb for even reading, let alone responding here, but it's like the XKCD comic "Someone is wrong on the Internet!" My geek roots betray me. Oh, and I used to live near Philly, so I'm not just spouting off nonsense. And, I still backed up my comments with actual sources.
As far as their respective rankings, look it up yourself - Google is your Friend(tm). The comments above aren't trustworthy.

damn, cardozo girls are kind of fiiiiine. their guys all look like they're 12 though.
Posted by: big ups | March 31, 2008 10:35 PM
Hmm... what Fordham/Dozo fight at the after party? I was there and I don't remember that... maybe I was too drunk. Make love, not war.
Also, the "only top 10% get biglaw jobs" thing certainly doesn't hold true anymore, and USNWR sucks. Talk to Emory undergrad about their drop a few years back when the Dean refused to provide them with certain student financial information he deemed irrelevant and intrusive.
