Update: Cass Sunstein's 'Power' Resigns
We updated our original post from this morning about Samantha Power calling Hillary Clinton a "monster," but it's a big enough development to cover in a separate post. So here we go.
Professor Power, rumored love interest of Cass Sunstein, resigned from the Obama campaign because of her tawdry remarks about Hillary Clinton in an interview earlier this week. She also apologized publicly:
"With deep regret, I am resigning from my role as an adviser the Obama campaign effective today," Ms. Power said in a statement released by the campaign. "Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor, and purpose of the Obama campaign. And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months."
Obama Aide Resigns for Calling Clinton a "Monster" [NYT]

Is this a real resignation or a Ciolli resignation?
This person is not an attorney and does not work within the legal field. This, and the CWT posting, were both worthless.
Yawn
2:01 - see all the comments in the previous Power post demanding a post on the resignation. perhaps you should state a long list of your demands and preferences for this website so that the posters can follow your desires and your's alone. better yet, why not get your own blog where you can decide what's worthwhile and post it. i'll be sure to stop by and tell you what a crappy job your doing.
This is Brilliant! Powers is serving as Obama's sacraficial lamb. Through this episode Obama can go negative on Hillary and still come out smelling like roses because he looks like such a great guy for firing anyone who looks like they are going negative.
Brilliant! Go Obama!
She'll still be an advisor. She just won't be an official campaign surrogate anymore. Not a big deal.
This use of the possessive for someone as significant as Samantha Powers is offensive. In what sense does she belong to Cass?
Back at my high school, in student council elections, guys went from serving as official campaign surrogates to advisors all the time. It was no big deal.
2:07: It's so cute that you think people will actually fall for it.
I have been very surprised by the number of women, like Samantha Power, who judge Hillary not on her policy but her gender. I don't see African-Americans in the Hillary camp attacking Obama based on his race.
Of course, 2:09, the use of the possessive for less "significant" women is just fine?
Obama inspires me...... to take a big dump!
2:05 - calm down there, little bobcat. Try redirecting all that energy to learning the difference between your and you're, and how "your's" gets you a ten yard penalty for improper apostrophe use.
She's a towering mediocrity who is simply trying to save her gig at Harvard.
They should boot her now, too!
Soooo why is this legal news? Because she *may* be dating a law professor?
I really hate the politics on this board, and the obvious skew of those politics.
Obama should go on 60 minutes and say that "Clinton is not a monster, as far as I know."
We are the people we've been hoping for. Presumably then, to steal a line from Hutchins, we can all go home now. I hope eveyone is done with this clown and we can move onto to candidates with some gravitas.
barack hussein obama is not qualified to be president...as far as I can tell.
she looks a lot different here...guess those stylists at mensvogue can really work magic!
Did she resign "because of" her remarks or simply "after making" them? I'm not saying it's wrong, but it sure ain't right. All these non-Lat posts give me the blues.
obama benefits from white guilt...as far as I know
Powers' offensive comments about Monsters are inappropriate.
rmm is a racist retard, as far as I know.

assuming all the rumors regarding her and Cass are true, this little incident should serve as a reinforcement of the value of the phrase 'don't shit (fuck) where you eat'.
Think of Sunstein's position this morning - he's intertwined a departure from Chicago (his base for decades) with a political campaign wherein he surely wants to maintain a strong role with a romantc interest that motivated the move to Boston, was formerly compatible with his political aspirations, but now is suddenly at odds with pal Barack.
If I were in his position, Id have one hell of a headache right now. He might be able to juggle this odd confluence of academic/political/romantic, but its going to be a bitch of a task now.
Gravitas?
Give me a break. As First Lady, Hillary Clinton was in charge of tea parties and cookie exchanges-- nothing more. She is as qualified to be president as my johnson.
"I have been very surprised by the number of women, like Samantha Power, who judge Hillary not on her policy but her gender. I don't see African-Americans in the Hillary camp attacking Obama based on his race."
This is absurd. Power's comments on Clinton's moral character are no more a judgment about her gender than Clinton's attacks on Obama for being a stuffed suit are a judgment about his race. I wish I could say I'm surprised by the number of Clinton supporters who recharacterize any attack on her character or her alleged "experience" as misogynistic, but, unfortunately, I cannot.
2:36's johnson to White House!
{"Give me a break. As First Lady, Hillary Clinton was in charge of tea parties and cookie exchanges-- nothing more. She is as qualified to be president as my johnson."}
If your johnson can take charge of tea parties and cookie exchanges, it might be able to win some delegates in the Democratic primary. It should get into the race before it's too late.
Not attractive in the least.
When I said "monster", I meant a cute, loveable little monster, like Elmo or Grover.
The problem, though, is that trend regarding the taller candidate usually winning elections. Your johnson wouldn't stand a chance unless the rival is a grain of rice or something.
no scotus for cass, now?
2:46 -
Tribe is next in line anyway
That's a shame. It would have been nice for the media to spend a weekend or two debating Obama's advisors. I think the voters would be interested to see who he surrounds himself with - and who he is likely to fill the Secretary of State's office with. It would have been great to see Hillary respond: "Look who calls me a 'monster.' A so-called foreign policy expert who thinks we should sell out Israel and give weapons to Hamas. Is this who Barak Obama is taking advice from? Are those the kinds of policies we can expect to see from a President Obama?" Too bad he canned her before it caught up with him.
"I have been very surprised by the number of women, like Samantha Power, who judge Hillary not on her policy but her gender. I don't see African-Americans in the Hillary camp attacking Obama based on his race."
First of all, this wasn't a gender attack. Second, which campaign have you been watching if you don't think Clinton's black supporters haven't been attacking Obama's race?
Andrew Young: Bill Clinton is blacker than Obama. Bill probably had more black women than Barack has (while this may be true, it has no bearing on Obama's blackness. It only means the Barack is faithful to his wife where as Bill is a man whore)
Bob Johnson: Called Barack a Sidney Poitier guess who's coming to dinner kind of guy. (For the uninformed, this means that he's a sellout)
2:17 - people who correct grammar in comment sections are insecure, anti-social dorks who will die alone after a lifetime of irrelevance. look it up, its scientifically proven.

I don't mean to be rude, but I really miss you LAT. Please come back, or let me blog for you.
2:53(2) nailed it.
the big news is that obama's supposed counter-punch to lack of experience is character and ability to choose the right people to surround himself with.
yet he surrounds himself with many divisive and just plain lousy people especially with regard to foreign policy.
eventually, when the media wakes up, this will come out.
3:11, so what you're saying is that you will die alone?
3:16, I agree completely. Obama is the democrats version of George Bush. He's got lots of character and heart but his inexperience and shady connections to people like Rezko and Power are going to make a mess of his administration. Remember, the president doesn't govern alone. These cooks are going to be running the place.
Inexperience and shady connections sounds like Bill Clinton in 1992. And it sounds like Hillary Clinton in 2008.
I think the reason Hillary will not release her tax returns is that she lists "Monster" under "Occupation," and has deducted her monster supplies as a business expense.
This woman is a first class leftist clown. I can't believe Obama was taking advice from this women...fot the past year!
3:29 I'm not even talking about Rezko or other shady connections.
Assume it's all nonsense.
The problem is that the people he selects as his advisors, which are the best indicators of who he'll select for his cabinet, lack good judgment.
And they are way out there in left field (e.g. powers wanting america to use military force to make israel give the palestinians a state unconditionally)
But again, the media isn't interested in covering the candidates as much as trying to prop up the one they like.

3:29 - WHAT?
" Obama is the democrats version of George Bush. He's got lots of character and heart "
They are not even on the same planet.
I am a registered republican and have worked for a Republican Congresswoman, but Bush is a borderline retarded frat boy who NEVER would have had the chops to get into the white house on his own if a close relative of his had not held the position.
4:47 - I too am not a Dubya fan. But what are you talking about having the "chops" to get into the Whitehouse? Would Kennedy have had the chops if his father hadn't been Joe Kennedy? JQ Adams? Or, dare I say, would Hillary have the chops if her hubby wasn't Bubba? I welcome your Bush bashing (I do it myself), but don't play like the Presidency is some sort of meritocracy. If you get there, you deserve to be there.
2:46(1) - you obviously haven't seen my johnson
Sure having a rich or connected father helps. But if George Bush's father had not been President of the United States (not just rich & powerful, a la Joe K.) he would never have become president.
I agree with your point about Hillary, but I think it is even more true with her. NO WAY she would be a viable candidate if not married to him. We've all seen the interviews of ppl who say they are voting for her because of him.
Your last sentence doesn't mean anything and misses my point, which is that Obama is a presidential candidate solely because of who he is; Bush Jr. is president in large part because of (and certainly would not be there without) who his father is, and that equating the heart and character of the two is a joke. You can't seriously argue that because Bush is the president, he has same character and heart as all other presidents or presidential contenders.
5:09 -- pics?
speaking of monsters....after seeing the photo with this post maybe Ms. Power should check the mirror. yeesh
"Your last sentence doesn't mean anything and misses my point, which is that Obama is a presidential candidate solely because of who he is;"
And you think my statement doesn't mean anything?
"Bush Jr. is president in large part because of (and certainly would not be there without) who his father is, and that equating the heart and character of the two is a joke. "
I'm not comparing the character of Obama vs. Bush. I'm saying your rough notion that one's "chops," which I take to mean some sort of inherent ability, qualifies and even causes someone to be President is wrong.
"You can't seriously argue that because Bush is the president, he has same character and heart as all other presidents or presidential contenders."
I don't even know what this means. First, Al Sharpton was a contender, so I'm not sure there's a character qualification. Are character and heart two prerequisites to being President? Not that I know of. Bush "deserves" to be there just any anyone who's been President "deserved" to be there. You value judgments on one being more deserving than another based on "character" and "heart" and lack of family connections are meaningless.
Fact: Clinton is a monster.
Fact: Autistic children have more charm than Clinton.
Fact: Obama's middle name is Hussein.
Fact: Obama is a recovered coke head.
Fact: Our next president will be: 1) rich, 2) white(ish) 3) elitist.
5:36 Come on now, are you just arguing to argue, or are you really that dense?
Bush (W) was a gazillion times more qualified as Obama -- Obama has never run anything but a classroom and a union rally.
Is america really about to elect a black muslim named Barrack HUSSEIN 7 years after 9/11? No way in hell.
02:13, what the hell are you talking about? Powers called her a "monster," not because Hillary is a woman, but because, well, Hillary is a monster.
Why do you immediately read gender in the comment, and tell me what I'm missing in the fact that I don't.
The "Patricia Derian" of the Obama campaign gets thrown off the bus !
Hallelujah!
4:47 - right. I'm the dense one. I'm the one arguing that people "deserve" to be the President because their "chops" are all their own and they possess superior "character" and "heart." The day you realize that the world isn't a Disney movie, come back to me with your sappy take on the meaning of the American Presidency.
she is a slut
I liked the other photo of Samantha better. You know, the one where she is dressed in that slinky black dress, bare-legged while crouching down and giving the viewer that come-hither look.
Good times, good times
Guys at my high school used to vote for communists, who would gladly slaughter hundreds of people if it meant they would get elected, all the time. It was no big deal.
Sorry, but she didn't look good in that picture either.
Take the law school goggles off.
Man, this lady is far from attractive. She's not a dog, but I she wouldn't even get a second glance on the campus of a state university. She would only be good looking at a place like Harvard, where the women look absolutely terrible for the most part. Although, I have known a couple of total hotties from Harvard.
It's a shame that the focus is on Power's "inexcusable remarks" about Clinton, rather than her radical ideas about foreign policy. I want to know whether President Obama will really back out on Israel and spend billions arming Hamas. And if not, I want to know why he is surrounding himself with people who would.
exactly 8:41.
the media doesn't even discuss the views of his top advisors when they're in the news for other reasons.
how can anyone not see the media is trying to make the news rather than cover it?
The only people who care about Israel issues are the 2% of American Jews and the politicians who send taxpayer money to Israel, the latter because much of that money goes from US taxpayers > Israel > AIPAC > back to the pockets of the politicians. I mean really, who would vote against for giving taxpayer money to themselves?
Surely other Americans should find it troubling that the 2nd largest lobby in the US behind the NRA is not the insurance companies, not the farmers, not the pharmaceutical companies, and not the AARP's senior citizens, but rather a foreign power that is currently under investigation by the FBI for stealing US secrets. This is an issue I'd be more interested in.
"The only people who care about Israel issues are the 2% of American Jews and the politicians"
Well shit, I can make up numbers too. How's this: 99% of Americans care about Israel, except for "anonymous Klansmen 1:06 AM."
only people who care about Israel are the 2% of Jews, and 30% of evangelicals.
and the evangelicals are more supportive of the state's existence (albeit with religious theories that any Jew can rightly ignore) than most liberal brain-washed Jews who read these pages.
dipshit.
Co-sign 3:17, except that I think the number for evangelicals is much higher than 30%, and the concern extends to Christians in general (not just evangelicals).
I suspect that a large number of non-Christians also think it is bad policy to abandon an ally in favor of a country run by terrorists. But then again, that kind of logic won't get me tenure at Harvard, will it?
I'm secular, white and moderate and I support Israel. Would I have supported it in 1947? Probably not. But it's a fair accompli now and given the alternatives in the region (Syria, a future Palestine, Lebanon), I'd rather have a stable, militarily strong democracy running the show over there than Islamists.
In my experience, it's largely the far left (a la Powers) and the realist right (as opposed to the necons) who don't like or support Israel.
Obviously everyone believes in "supporting Israel", but there's a difference between support and unconditional approval of illegal acts (i.e. illegal settlements, illegal clusterbombs in Lebanon, collective punishment, illegal occupation, treating Palestinians as second-class citizens, etc.).
It's not a good idea to equate "support" with allowing them to make all your policies, such as on Iraq and Iran. We should be wearing the pants in the relationship, not Israel. Our security is closely tied to the peace in their region, so blindly supporting one side or the other just doesn't make sense for our OWN security interests -- thus, we need to be neutral and do what's best for us rather than making sure that they "win". As long as we remain so one-sided, there will never be a resolution. It's kind of like having your Mom be the judge of a beauty contest you're in--of course she's going to make sure you win, no matter how fugly you are. Israel does some pretty "fugly" things, but we just rubber-stamp them all.
I think most Americans are indifferent cause they have no idea what the hell is going on there, not because they support one side or the other.
FYI: Evangelicals aren't real people. I'd rather have EVOLVED MONKEYS vote than those fools, and I'd be embarassed if I was Israel to have them on my side and try to distance myself as much as possible.
Here's my all time favorite video, which still makes me laugh as I see the hands go up:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Cc8t3Zd5E
And see Huckabee's clarification in the next debate, where he explains that he believed the question was "Do you believe in God?" rather than "Do you believe in Evolution?" Only a politician could pull off that switch-a-roo with a straight face.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-BFEhkIujA&feature=related
Here's what I DON'T believe in, Mikey: RETARDS.
I hope you're not looking for clean hands in the region, 10:13. There are no good guys, only relative degrees of bad guys. I don't think I blindly support Israel. Rather, given the options, Israel remaining a viable, dominant state in the region is the best outcome. We're too far down the path to ever be considered a fair broker in the region. Even if we tried to curb our military and financial support to Israel, we'd still be branded as being their protector. I just don't think that terrorist and their client states are as nuanced about American foreign policy as we think they are.
"Obviously everyone believes in 'supporting Israel'"
Umm, no. Samantha Power does not believe in "supporting Israel." You are obviously not familiar with her writings or speeches.
"It's not a good idea to equate 'support' with allowing them to make all your policies, such as on Iraq and Iran."
Then it's a good thing we don't allow anyone to make our decisions for us. Like Ms. Power, however, you seem curiously unfamiliar with the actual facts about which you speak. Israel did not support the war in Iraq -- they viewed it as a distraction from Iran. Yet, according to Power (and apparently you, too) the Jewish lobby pushed us into Iraq.
"I think most Americans are indifferent cause they have no idea what the hell is going on there, not because they support one side or the other."
Then you need to get out of the bubble you are living in. Americans support Israel by a wide margin, probably 9-to-1 or more. Sorry that doesn't comport with your personal wordview.
11:28: That's why AIPAC **BOOED** Pelosi when she talked about leaving the war in Iraq during her speech to them.
One wrong fact and your whole make-belief assertions are discredited (Americans support Israel 9:1? LOL. Israel does not support war in Iraq? Double LOL). Good bye.
"That's why AIPAC **BOOED** Pelosi when she talked about leaving the war in Iraq during her speech to them."
I am curious why you think AIPAC members booing at a current speech proves that Israel "made" our decision to enter a war 5 years ago. I don't see the connection. Real good logic there, though. How about you go back to 2002 and look at what Israel was actually saying?
My "make-belief assertions"? My ass. There is a huge paper trail full of the "assertions." Your snide comment on a message board doesn't make them go away. Power is a radical who, like you, does not let facts get in the way of her agenda. Your grossly uninformed comments about Israel and the buildup to the Iraq war would be funny if the issue weren't so serious. Oh, wait, you used "LOL." No need to look up facts then ... argument closed. You sure showed me.
Like I said before, get out of your bubble.
1:52 AM is a tenured member of Ivy faculty.
10:26, I had the same thought. "LOL." All the great reasoning I would expect from an anti-Israel leftist.
I didn't want to have to bother looking up such a ridiculous, make-belief fact (9:1 American support) because it was so utterly false. But, since some of you Jewish folk are stuck in a so-called "bubble", people don't like you as much as you think. Here you go:
http://www.adl.org/PresRele/IslME_62/5179_62.htm
If you can't read straight from the ADL's mouth, 58% of Americans "view Israel favorably". Not even "support" Israel, but view them "favorably". That's astounding when you consider that most Americans' views are shaped by the media, which you can't even argue is written by and heavily biased toward Jews.
