What's Going on at Penn Law?

University of Pennsylvania Law School Penn Law Above the Law blog.jpgLast year, the WSJ Law Blog posed this question: "Are law students emotional wrecks?" Their post generated hundreds of comments.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that some law students have, in modern parlance, "issues." The stress of law school may have a tendency to trigger meltdowns. See, e.g., here (University of Alabama law student who gave a strange speech in class), here (Indiana University law student who shot up his casebooks), and here (University of Arizona law student accused of kidnapping her ex-boyfriend).

One of last year's more memorable incidents was this one, involving a student at the University of Pennsylvania Law School who riddled his neighbors' apartment door with bullets. Now we return to U. Penn -- where we recently spoke, and where the students struck us as happy and well-adjusted -- thanks to this Daily Pennsylvanian article:

Security has been increased around the Law School over the past several days in response to a student who has exhibited signs of unstable behavior. The student is being placed on involuntary leave....

The student had caused administrators concern because of an incident that happened at the Law School. It was then discovered that he had taken himself off of his psychiatric medication about a month ago, according to two Penn Law employees who were briefed on the situation and spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose this information. However, they were not told the specifics of the initial incident.

A tipster there tells us:

The Penn Law students have not received ANY formal communication about this, and the students are generally very upset that 1) we weren't told anything and 2) the first communication came from the undergraduate newspaper.

We'll keep you posted. If you have info to share, please email us. If you comment on this post, please do not mention any individuals by name, consistent with ATL's standard operating procedure.

Based on past precedent, we'd expect Dean Fitts to send out some vague email offering blanket reassurances, but declining to say more due to federal privacy law. That seems to be par for the course for these incidents.

The ivy league is an undergrad thing. Having a respectable law school is the exception for the Ivy League (only 3 of the 8). Cornell and Penn are well known TTTs trying live off uneducated ugrads, who didn't go to good colleges, thinking that it's their only chance to graduate from "an ivy", and PBD don't have law schools.

I found Penn Law to be pretty relaxed. The lack of class rank, a generous curve and the virtual guarantee of big law options (if you wanted them) created a fairly laid back student body.

Did some people freak out about grades? Of course, but it was hardly a tension-filled environment.

you can try to bash penn all you want as a "TTT" school but the bottom line is that its a top 10 school and nearly all their students get jobs doing what they want (whether it be biglaw or whatever). so beyond that, what does calling it a "TTT" school even mean? just a stupid label from someone who probably didn't get in.

I am so sick of this TTT crap. Get over yourselves and your insecurities. I wouldn't call Penn State law (or Penn for that matter) a TTT, anyway. By definition, a TTT requires that the school be in the third tier. I just checked and Penn State is in the 2nd tier.

avatar
34 Posted by Anon | Permalink Tuesday, March 4, 2008 12:02 PM

The TTT charge is just a metaphorical way of saying that among the top law schools in the country, Penn is one of the least impressive. It attracts insecure "climbers" like Anthony Cioli as students, for example, and is regularly described as overrated by Brian Leiter in his academic reputation rankings. I know many people who teach there and have the greatest respect for them but, for the same reason you wouldn't buy a Saab if you could afford a BMW, Lexus, or Acura, you wouldn't go to Penn if you got into Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, NYU and maybe even Virginia. It does not provide as much value for the money. On the other hand, you'd go there over Cooley, just as you'd buy a Saab instead of a (used) Yugo.

1. Commentators should take note of the distinction between (i) the University of Pennsylvania Law School ("Penn Law") and (ii) Penn State - Dickenson Law School.

2. As a somewhat recent graduate of Penn Law I can say with little doubt it is totally laid back. As previous commentators have noted, no class rank, super-reasonable curve, and big law jobs for whoever wants one (unless you are in the bottom 10% of the class).

During my third year, I spent 7 weeks in Paris, two weeks in California, and a week each in Egypt and Cuba. If you are reasonably intelligent, know you want a big law job, and are inclined to actively enjoy your life during downtime, Penn Law is probably a great fit.

On the other hand, if you like to stress and are an unrepentant gunner, Penn Law can be a tough place - not too many people there with whom to share your internal angst.

3. I used to drive a Saab, I now drive a Benz.

Law School is a joke -- everything you need to be a lawyer is taught the first week in Legal Research. The next 2.9 years are alcohol fueled, sex/drug experimentation, funded by the US government (subsidized loans). I went to top 6 (not including Penn) -- which basically means Chicago.

Law school is like a gym. Once you get in, you can bust your ass, work out, and look good. Or you can walk around, do curls, sit in steam room and talk to girls. Some people take steroids, others chat up chicks on stairmaster. Personal Trainers (profs) are there if you want them, and can be quite helpful. Either way you are paying huge membership fee and no matter what get athletes foot and crabs in the showers.

i dont think for a second that wachtell is any arbiter of talent at a law school but the non-wachtell atmosphere here is totally emblematic of why i like it here.

though its worth noting that penns class size is around 240, not the 400+ at NYU, Columbia and Harvard so yeah we are, at first glance, under-represented.

As much as this site's readers want to generalize student bodies at various law schools or characteristics at certain firms, there is only one real truism in the legal world: Lawyers are generally douchebags.

"Penn Law is fantastic, particularly if you want to go into BigLaw. Lots' of powerful alumni in the ranks of the Vault 100.

Yet further evidence that Penn Law students/alumni don't know how to write.

I really don't think Penn students are that upset that we don't have information. Gossip spreads quickly, anyway.

Most are just happy the appropriate (and perhaps even too severe) measures have been taken.

Let's relax. This is about a human being.

The most ridiculous part of this whole thing is that today, the day they tell the newspaper and piss the kid off, they don't have cops in the building. For the last week we have had Penn cops and Philly cops here. Not today though.

I love this place, but not informing us and then failing to have police in the building today is simply pitiful.

One oddity about Penn Law is the maintainance of a relatively small class size in spite of the large numbers of admittees. When I visited Penn on admitted students' day, I, for one, was disgusted by everything I saw--the dreary physical space and environs, the anti/nonintellectual attitudes of the current students who were fond of having keg parties in the courtyard and tried to sell the school on the same lines touted on this comment thread--no GPA, no class rank, everyone gets a job, etc.
One current student on the panel confessed that she had wanted to die 1l year. I'm sure that there were many others like me who got into Penn but were thankful that school wasn't their only option.

@1:10--"What are "anti-psychotic medications?" Mere anti-depressants or, are we talking, Haldol?

Can we get some demographic details on "senor crazy"?
Posted by: Anonymous | March 4, 2008 01:10 PM "

It might have helped if you actually read the excepts quoted in this blog post, which referred not to "anti-psychotic" medication but to psychiatric medication.
Most law students take some kinds of drugs, presription or otherwise, to deal with anxiety and depression. They keep the university counseling and psychological services departments in business. Your question about the demographics of the individual deemed to be a threat to others, coupled with your lack of reading comprehension skills, leads me to believe that you are a Penn Law student. If not, how are the demographics relevant?

Actually, 2:01, I was referring to the admitted students' day in 2002. Your lack of imagination and fondness for reliving your frat boy days confirms that I made the right decision not to attend a school surrounded by your ilk.

I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that 1:50 is choosing to go elsewhere. Disgusted by school sponsored kegs and a lack of class rank?

I also think Penn Law's facilities are nicer than any of the other schools I visited except maybe Cornell and the new NYU building.
But what do I know? I'm a nonintellectual.

Enjoy Columbia!

Lawyers have, by far, more mental problems than other professions - more alcoholism, anger management issues, higher divorce rates, etc.

There's nothing wrong with Penn. Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

this is so stupid. pennlaw is no better and no worse than the other schools ranked similarly- i cant understand these pissing contests, especially when its clear that many of these posts are by attorneys who should have much better things to do than attack/defend pennlaw.

i like it here, a few people dont like it here, its not the best school in the country, its certainly a good school, most of us are not on psychiatric medication, we all have pretty decent jobs lined up and we are, for the most part, fairly intelligent.

the school itself is very nicely maintained, and when its nice outside we do play frisbee in the quad and eat lunch in small multicultural groups straight outta the brochure.

were not that competitive because we know we will get the jobs we want and we are decidedly not a pretentious group (except for some token douchebags on law review).

we like to drink and go out and most of us do not take it all that seriously. we all worked hard 1L year, but not nearly as hard as our colleagues over at some other schools. we all wish we went to harvard, we all thank god we dont go to columbia and we all really thank god we dont go to temple or drexel.

and we ALL post on this stupid website in class.

Wow. Students who party? GASP! THE HORRORS! I'm guessing you ended up at Chicago Law in the library 7 days a week gunning for a 180+ in Con Law, and praying that the professor would call on you so you could share your pearls of wisdom about the free exercise of religion. Congrats.

Let me say that law school sucks. But if one has to go, I highly recommend Penn Law. My classmates were the best. I partied more in law school than in college. AND I went to Penn undergrad, where we did some heavy partying. To top it off, my grades sucked at Penn Law -- totally bottom of class -- but since I went to Penn Law, I got a BigLaw job in NYC! A female's good looks don't hurt either, but they are not required for a Big Law job.

It is unfortunate about this mentally unstable kid, but I appreciate that Penn is doing its best to protect the student population as well as trying to help this student get better so perhaps he can return. Penn is very supportive of students.
