ATL March April Madness for Law Firms, Round 3: Upsets Galore Heading Into the Final Four

The #1-seed, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, hath fallen, along with all of the other top-seeded law firms, in an Elite Eight that was good for "underdog" lovers. Heading into the Final Four are Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton (#7), Davis Polk & Wardwell (#5), Latham & Watkins (#8), and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (#6).

It's anybody's game. Here are the updated brackets:

Final Four copy.jpg

Time to vote down to the two "coolest" firms, defining "cool" however you please. Polls and information on the Elite Eight voting are available after the jump. Polls close Sunday at midnight!

In a narrow victory, Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton (51%) beat Cravath, Swaine & Moore (49%)
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (56%) beat Sullivan & Cromwell (44%)

In the most popular contest (1974 votes) Davis Polk & Wardwell (58%) beat Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (42%)
Latham & Watkins (53%) beat Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz (47%)

None of these firms is cool, but the super-uptight STB -- the white shoe of all white shoe firms -- is undoubtedly the least cool. Unless you think the "don't speak to a partner unless spoken to" rule is "cool."

Define "top 10 firm," 1:22. Cadwalader is more profitable than any of these 4 firms. If you're talking about "coolest place to work," I guarantee you that firm is nowhere in the Vault or AmLaw Top 100. So you must just be referring to ignorant law students' uninformed notions of "prestige." In which case I don't understand the relevance of Latham's hours policy.

avatar
51 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 3:46 PM

Latham had to beat Wachtell in "coolness." If we were voting for the most prestigious law firm, obviously Wachtell would win (or at least be at the top with Cravath). If we were voting for the best paying firm, once again, Wachtell would be up there. However, if we are actually voting for the coolest firm, Latham's (relatively) laid-back California culture beats uptight, trying too hard, anal retentive, NY slave ship Wachtell any day.

avatar
52 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 3:49 PM

Why does Wachtell work everyone so hard, or are the rumors just blown out of proportion?

avatar
53 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 3:49 PM

Or if we were voting on global reach, Latham would beat any of these guys (and compete well with CC or the Magic Circle folks). Most of the "most prestigious" firms are NY based psuedo-investment banks (whose employees are not even paid like investment bankers, although Wachtell comes closer). Not a great place to be as our financial system unravels.

avatar
54 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 3:52 PM

Wachtell works everyone so hard (although not a lot harder than many of the v10 firms in NY) because they have very demanding clients and they pay thier associates double what most of their competitors do.

avatar

avatar
61 Posted by splainin da ob-v-us | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 4:12 PM

People don't get what this is about. Comments like "none of these firms are cool" or the opposite "why did Latham beat Wachtell, the latter is more prestigious" just prove the point.

Let me explain the game:

Vault ranks the top firms by prestige. We have those stats. Now, Lat's question is, among those firms, which is the coolest?

What is so damn hard to understand about that? Talk about unable to follow the call of the question -- good luck in law school and beyond, foolz.

Those results seem kinda funny, because the contest here seems to be CGSH/DPW (nerdy-chic, law review) on one side, and LW/STB (fratty, bar review) on the other.

Personally, I was never into beer bongs or Greek life, so I'm more in the first camp.

Hey, are your memories this short? Don't you remember that good ol' STB gave us the $160 salary bump? They should be permanently the coolest firm until some other firm leads a pay hike.

Simpson Thacher: first to $160k, first coolest firm.

1:51 - not everyone thinks that extra money (even a 100% bonus) is worth the complete and total loss of your life. working 70-80 hours a week is much different than consistently working over 100 hours a week. hence, for many people latham > wachtell, by far.

I was at the Softball Tournament and GW pissed all over UVA. It was disgusting.
