What's Going On At Sonnenschein?
Over at Greedy South, various rumors are circulating about Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. One poster claimed that the firm rescinded offers of summer employment to several incoming summer associates in the Charlotte office. Later on in the thread, others chimed in to claim that the firm is rescinding offers to full-time associates who were set to arrive in the fall (possibly beyond Charlotte as well).
An ATL tipster wrote us:
I know things are really, really, slow at most firms in Charlotte (as has been noted by the firings at Cadwalader and Dechert), but is there any way that you could find out whether this is actually true? It seems like the elephant in the room is everyone's hope that securitization will magically pick up again, but everyone seems to forget that it's difficult for a market segment to "rebound" that wasn't even in existence 10 years ago.Is this a sign of Sonnenschein closing its Charlotte office (after only 1 year)? Have you heard anything about other offices having the same types of problems? Just trying to find out what's going on.
We reached out to the firm for comment earlier this week but they never got back to us. If you have any info to share, please email us. Thanks.
Sonnenschein Firings? [Greedy South / Infirmation]

FIRST DOESNT MATTER
In other breaking news, you can now earn a law degree from the #7 law school in the country all online!

If ur not first ur last
3:31: nicely played
W O W, an article about nothing. With the exeception of the Judge of the Day, ATL totally blows today.
What is going on at Thacher Proffitt & Wood today?
3:31: no you can't
Sonnenschein to stick-it-where-the-sonnen-don't-schein!
3:39: why not? the website says the program is there and the rankings put them at #7.
good authority that the firm is planning to phase out / drastically reduce its summer class sizes over the next few years and grow exclusively laterally. wouldn't be surprised if the axe falls on more than just CLT folks
Word on the street is they are in talks with another medium sized firm about a merger
I am a proud alum of U Penn State Law (West Phili Campus). Our rankings seem to go down when the Quakers don't make the Final Four.
I really wanted to go to New York (Not University) Law School - but I didn't get in. ;-)
I heard Thacher Profitt & Wood rumors.
With what other medium sized firm are they looking to merge?
Sonnenschein who?
>>good authority that the firm is planning to phase out / drastically reduce its summer class sizes over the next few years and grow exclusively laterally. wouldn't be surprised if the axe falls on more than just CLT folks<<
Great. As if it isn't already difficult enough for new law school graduates. Now, if this is to be believed, the firms will start putting up even more barries to entry.
What a profession!
They used to go by Sors but went back to Sonnenschein after the war.
Sonnenschein is planning on closing its Charlotte office, hence the cuts to the summer program and incoming first years. These cuts are not expected to impact other offices, but if you have a summer or permanent offer in Charlotte, start looking elsewhere.
free lunch at GW from Sonnenschein next week ;) yum.
4:05.5- funny, considering that all three name partners were jewish.
4:05.0- as the legal market become more stratified and the toilet law schools vomit more graduates into the market under increasingly ludicrous debt burdens, are you shocked?
4:05 II: Whatever you do DON'T MENTION THE WAR!!! Right then, let's get started!
I hear TPW is delaying the start date for the incoming first year class until late October, which may need to be extended until January.
There were lay-offs at TPW today.
Forget law school- I'm going for my degree in turfgrass science! Thanks, Penn State!
http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/BachelorinTurfgrassScience.shtml
what war??????????????????????
4:26 - Fawlty Towers. Rent the DVDs.
"Extending the start date until January" would be effectively firing most of the class. Generally loan deferment only lasts 6 months after graduation.
Forget Sonnenenenenshieneen...What's going on at WCL?
This office has a history of screwing incoming law grads. This was the CLT office of Kilpatrick Stockton and about 18 of the 25 attys left to start Sonn.'s office. The summers who accepted jobs with KilStock were put in a bad position, and students who accepted for summers were screwed as well. Now Sonn. cut offers for all incoming 1st years and summers, so these people are truly screwed now that its April and interview season is over.
Also note that this office does mostly commerical real estate work, theyre not totally securitization like Cadwalader.
Yeah I think TPW incomings be F'd.
BTW, my source says they aren't closing CLT, just "drastically cutting back their expectations" for the office
3:48.
UPENN State offers onine MBA degrees from its Wharton school, but doesn't offer it's JD online.
Charlotte? In other news, Anchorage is suffering a slowdown as well...
you guys are so stupid. u penn and penn state aren't the same thing--u penn is private and an ivy, penn state is a big state school. get your facts straight dumb asses.
What? u penn and penn state aren't the same!?
I knew I was getting screwed. I'm calling the Dean.
I guess that's why I had such a hard time getting football tickets.
JoPa coaches at a top 10 law school!
I can get a warden MBA without having to move to Happy Valley, awesome!

Man I can't believe it! All that time when I thought I was going to U Penn State Law School (West Phili Campus) and now some brilliant guy tells me it's just University of Pennsylvania Law Schoo! I'm going to have to update my resume!

The level of imbecility on this forum is unbelievable...
Sonnenschein is in deep shit - buddies of mine at their Chicago office told me that work has dried up - both of them barely billed 100 hours last month. Apparently, talks about layoffs are rampant and morale is abysmally low. Reminds me of what happened prior to the CWT layoffs...
It is shameful that so-called 'biglaw' attorneys don't know the difference between the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State. UPenn is an IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL. I even own a shirt that says "Not Penn State".
Shame upon the all of you who mix that up! The idocracy amongst the peer group of whom I am working with is far to great to imagine. I am happier that my peers at Penn would not be so dumb so as to fail to separate these two schools which are very differnet and far apart from one another.
are you guys just pulling my leg? i haven't been checking this site for awhile--is this some type of inside joke?
7:04; what are you talking about? The grads from Penn St law are just as intelligent and competent as those from this so called "U Penn." No difference between the two, so relax and accept the obvious.
7:20 - Its not my fault if you do not understand what I am saying about the Ivy League; you are clearly shooting a few strokes under par. Penn is a forefront-running legal institution of knowledge and academic learning when Penn State is not even in the same country code. It is to you for whom I am sorry for the insecureness. Pennsylvania is clearly the law school with the stronger student body.
Are you guys serious? Penn State and Penn aren't the same? Shit. And I had a 179 LSAT. I could have gone anywhere!
Damn it, damn it, damn it.
Any word on Sonnenschein DC?
anyone know where penn is? i keep hearing great things about it.
Idiocracy? Insecureness? So you're saying you're from Penn State?
Friend of mine had an offer with Sonnenschein that was rescinded this week. Rumor is definitely true, although I can't speak as to the reason.
7:46 - SA offer or Associate offer?
7:46(1) is obviously not smart enough to catch that 7:04 is an anti-Penn troll.
7:46 - Charlotte office, or another office?
Glad I got off that sinking ship.
Have any other offices rescinded offers? SA, or permanent?
You guys are ruining this site with your Penn/Penn State, GW/Georgetown flames. Please stop or go to XOXO, where they actually appreciate that crap.
I don't see what the problem is. Numerous states have overlapping school systems. Look at IUPUI: Indiana University Purdue University Indiana. When they play football, they're the Boilermakers. At basketball, they go by the Hoosiers or by the Salukis every 5th year. Just a couple years ago, they fired Bobby "I throw Chairs" Knight and went to the final four.
It's essentially the same deal with U Penn State, only, Joe Pa didn't want the name "Penn" in his school twice, because, we all know that just sounds silly.
The UPenn/Penn St trolling is all being done by one sick person, sadly.
The only thing that matters today is: US employers cut payrolls for a third month in a row in March, slashing 80,000 jobs for the biggest monthly job decline in five years as the economy headed into a downturn.
Was an incoming associate in CLT
7:04 -
The Ivy League is an athletic conference.
You are a dipshit.
Also, "shooting a few strokes under par" is the object of the f-ing game, moron. Maybe go for "a few cards short of a full deck" next time so you don't embarass yourself any further.
If you went to Penn, its no wonder people on this site like to play with the small minds of Penn grads.
Any word on the Alston & Bird securitization shop?
8:48-
Good point. Also, that the inflation rate is way up. We have a triple economic threat: unemployment coupled with high inflation and a crashing real estate market.
Come on people - can't you take a joke? I went to Penn Law (yes University of Pennslyvania Law School) - and I think the Penn State/ U Penn line is pretty funny. That said - I better get back to work at my top shelf law firm - Cleary, Davis. ;-)
Duh- you're a retard. Take your crap to XOXO where it belongs or at least go back to spanking it in the stacks of the law library.
Real humans out there: any word on other SNR offices? or is this just confined to CLT?
Why doesn't SNR respond to this? Sounds like they'd rather have everyone think it's true, rather than prove it by admitting to it. What a wretched toilet of a firm.
Their lack of response must mean it's true. Rescinding offers is about the worst thing a firm can do for its rep. There's no way they're going to confirm it if it is true, and they would've immediately disputed it if it is false.
12:05, I agree. Holy shit is all I can say. I can't believe they're doing something so TTT. But this story needs to get blown up so everyone knows to avoid this firm like the plague from now on.
What I find so shocking is that you'd think real estate practice groups would be doing just peachy these days.
but rescinding a bunch of offers 1:53? that's insane. they could have at least offered them jobs in another office. what the hell are summers and first years supposed to do now? it's april.
i also don't like how the firm won't admit to their shady dealings.
I'm in need of a new investigator, so they could join me. Herc doesn't seem to be working out.
