What's Going On At Sonnenschein?

Sonnenschein Nath Rosenthal Above the Law blog.jpgOver at Greedy South, various rumors are circulating about Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. One poster claimed that the firm rescinded offers of summer employment to several incoming summer associates in the Charlotte office. Later on in the thread, others chimed in to claim that the firm is rescinding offers to full-time associates who were set to arrive in the fall (possibly beyond Charlotte as well).

An ATL tipster wrote us:

I know things are really, really, slow at most firms in Charlotte (as has been noted by the firings at Cadwalader and Dechert), but is there any way that you could find out whether this is actually true? It seems like the elephant in the room is everyone's hope that securitization will magically pick up again, but everyone seems to forget that it's difficult for a market segment to "rebound" that wasn't even in existence 10 years ago.

Is this a sign of Sonnenschein closing its Charlotte office (after only 1 year)? Have you heard anything about other offices having the same types of problems? Just trying to find out what's going on.

We reached out to the firm for comment earlier this week but they never got back to us. If you have any info to share, please email us. Thanks.

Great. As if it isn't already difficult enough for new law school graduates. Now, if this is to be believed, the firms will start putting up even more barries to entry.

What a profession!

Sonnenschein is planning on closing its Charlotte office, hence the cuts to the summer program and incoming first years. These cuts are not expected to impact other offices, but if you have a summer or permanent offer in Charlotte, start looking elsewhere.

This office has a history of screwing incoming law grads. This was the CLT office of Kilpatrick Stockton and about 18 of the 25 attys left to start Sonn.'s office. The summers who accepted jobs with KilStock were put in a bad position, and students who accepted for summers were screwed as well. Now Sonn. cut offers for all incoming 1st years and summers, so these people are truly screwed now that its April and interview season is over.

Also note that this office does mostly commerical real estate work, theyre not totally securitization like Cadwalader.

Yeah I think TPW incomings be F'd.

BTW, my source says they aren't closing CLT, just "drastically cutting back their expectations" for the office

The level of imbecility on this forum is unbelievable...

Sonnenschein is in deep shit - buddies of mine at their Chicago office told me that work has dried up - both of them barely billed 100 hours last month. Apparently, talks about layoffs are rampant and morale is abysmally low. Reminds me of what happened prior to the CWT layoffs...

41 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, April 3, 2008 7:04 PM

It is shameful that so-called 'biglaw' attorneys don't know the difference between the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State. UPenn is an IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL. I even own a shirt that says "Not Penn State".

Shame upon the all of you who mix that up! The idocracy amongst the peer group of whom I am working with is far to great to imagine. I am happier that my peers at Penn would not be so dumb so as to fail to separate these two schools which are very differnet and far apart from one another.

7:04; what are you talking about? The grads from Penn St law are just as intelligent and competent as those from this so called "U Penn." No difference between the two, so relax and accept the obvious.

avatar
44 Posted by 7:04 | Permalink Thursday, April 3, 2008 7:32 PM

7:20 - Its not my fault if you do not understand what I am saying about the Ivy League; you are clearly shooting a few strokes under par. Penn is a forefront-running legal institution of knowledge and academic learning when Penn State is not even in the same country code. It is to you for whom I am sorry for the insecureness. Pennsylvania is clearly the law school with the stronger student body.

I don't see what the problem is. Numerous states have overlapping school systems. Look at IUPUI: Indiana University Purdue University Indiana. When they play football, they're the Boilermakers. At basketball, they go by the Hoosiers or by the Salukis every 5th year. Just a couple years ago, they fired Bobby "I throw Chairs" Knight and went to the final four.

It's essentially the same deal with U Penn State, only, Joe Pa didn't want the name "Penn" in his school twice, because, we all know that just sounds silly.

You are a dipshit.

Also, "shooting a few strokes under par" is the object of the f-ing game, moron. Maybe go for "a few cards short of a full deck" next time so you don't embarass yourself any further.

If you went to Penn, its no wonder people on this site like to play with the small minds of Penn grads.

Real humans out there: any word on other SNR offices? or is this just confined to CLT?

avatar
65 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 11:19 AM

Why doesn't SNR respond to this? Sounds like they'd rather have everyone think it's true, rather than prove it by admitting to it. What a wretched toilet of a firm.

avatar
66 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 12:05 PM

Their lack of response must mean it's true. Rescinding offers is about the worst thing a firm can do for its rep. There's no way they're going to confirm it if it is true, and they would've immediately disputed it if it is false.

avatar
67 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, April 4, 2008 12:46 PM

12:05, I agree. Holy shit is all I can say. I can't believe they're doing something so TTT. But this story needs to get blown up so everyone knows to avoid this firm like the plague from now on.
